True. I used to read a lot of stories and almost all of them have something occur to the protagonist that he then responds to. This kinda mentality had me waiting around for something to happen to me and it got me very depressed when it didn’t. Luckily I got well sick of that during my late teens

If it was a choice, people wouldn't choose to be obese, because it sucks. Ergo, it's not a choice QED

        Anonymous

it isn't a choice, but multiple tiny choices
so yes, in total it comes down to choice

the question itself is phrased poorly, because it implies there is a singular choice being made, which leads to obesity

it is roughly 600 choices of donuts, sugar in coffee etc. which lead to someone becoming fat over two years
        600 easy choices to avoid

now for pre puberty children this is a whole other issue
but for obese adults it is their fault and their fault alone

the sjw's are all usefull idiots, the entire structure of the ideology is built with esg scores (Environmental, Social and Governance) in mind. corps use esg scores to do deals with each other and offset their less moral activities.
        >ex
        >company uses products made with slave labor from central african plantations and uhiger factories
        >score lowers
        >Company puts up rainbow flag on on western social media for pride month

        >score raises enough to offset literal slavery
corps that rely on more deals with other companies, like media companies, do this shit more often, especially during acquisitions and mergers. WWE for instance, is kinda kept alive from their ad deals they got from womens events. And Gillette was looking to be bought out by the time they made that toxic masculinity add.

Wouldnt this mean that its a good thing to realise that these companies are at fault for obesity in the western world? It's a choice with complications. If you make shitty food decisions and stay sedentary you'll be more likely to make another of that class of decisions. In another vein, if you eat good foods and exercise you'll be likely to make a good decision in the future. It's kind of like a sigmodal curve, where if you make 75% of the effort you'll get 95% of the results.

It's true. Most people do not have agency or suffering tolerance to will themselves from obese to fit; and these psychological qualities are largely heritably and immutable. Given an unprecedented abundance of food, they'll eat themselves into a sphere - no matter how bad it makes them feel.

    Depends what you mean.
Some people can remain skinny with zero effort because their appetite is small and they feel full very quickly but these people will also have trouble bulking or can go the other way and become under weight.

Other people will struggle because even though it is possible from them to lose weight, their body will fight against it as hard as possible and not give up for example by not releasing satiety hormones until they have eaten surplus calories for the day or reducing energy expenditure by reducing NEAT (non exercise calorie burning) whenever possible.

  19. 2 years ago

I think it's extremely hard not to be obese in a world of easy access food and jobs that often mean high stress and low movement. That said it's still a choice.

I've been a fatty my whole life, never blamed anyone but me.

  20. 2 years ago

Ultimately, yes. But there are factors that may reduce culpability, like genetics and environment. If a normal person struggles not to eat themselves to death in a given environment, you need to look and see if something else is going on there.

I literally do not understand how people become obese. I have/had an absolute garbage diet. I was often eating fast food like every day but not every meal. Lots of processed foods though and I still only managed to get to the line for overweight for my BMI. How the absolute frick are people going over even 200 pounds? I literally cannot comprehend that. My body throttles me and I get acid reflux or full at a certain point. I literally cannot conceptualize it, which is what makes me think "oh this person really really really didn't give a frick" but I KNOW there's shit food out there but at the same time obesity doesn't seem physically possible even though I see it everywhere. It's a constant puzzle I wonder about. Like I want to see the data through the years that led them here.

Not even 50, because that’ll only bump ur weight 10 lb max before u stabilize at a new weight, probably not even. You have to be eating thousands of calories over the limit each day, and increasing each day.

      >I literally do not understand how people become obese.
It's genetics I think, many fat peoples bodies are optimized to hyper-convert the food they eat into adipose tissue, much more so than a normal person.
That's why they seemingly effortlessly balloon to 400lbs+. Their bodies are just continuously laying down fat from everything they eat.

I was always slim and lean with abs for the first 20 years of my life. Then I started trying to bulk up as heavy as possible. The heaviest I got over the next 25 years was 77kg (170lbs) at 5'10.
The amount of food I was eating was ridiculous, just stuffing my face until I feel like puking everyday. I can't comprehend how people get over 200lbs t my height, let alone 300 and 400. It just doesn't make sense to me apart from acknowledging its genetics.
Maybe I have worms inside me that eat all my food. or my body just converts all the food into energy. And obese people convert all the food into body fat due to genetics. Like their mitochondria are screwed up and can't burn energy so just store the energy as fat.

        Anonymous

My sister was always around 60 kg. Then over the course of a year or two she started ballooning up to 80kg. She couldn't figure out why because she didn't chance her diet or exercise. So she went to the doctor and they did tests and found she was going into early menopause and all her hormones were fricked up. So she got prescribed HRT and since she has already dropped 10 kg down to 70 kg, same calories and exercise. So there's more to it than calories in calories out.

Look at bodybuilders on tren and GH, they can eat massive quantities of junk food and stay shredded, but if they come off they gain fat really fast with the same calories. Calories in calories out doesn't seem to work.

Cico does work and is the absolute basic principle everything comes down to, but it is not as simple as gays try to make it out (food goes in and exercise). Hormones and physiology in general have a huge influence on the ci and on the co. I know a guy who has a defect which makes him unable to digest fat (lacking the hormone to split up the fat or sth), so his ci is highly impacted and very hard to put in simple numbers

I don't know how someone could be a twink and lift for "le aesthetics" when in reality they cannot gain weight necessary to actually put up real weight. It works the same way for fat people. The same way you and your 5'10 160 lbs frame struggling to gain a lb, some people's bodies wants to naturally be fat, its called shit genetics. Not an excuse to be fat, obviously, but the concept is not hard to understand.

Heres a thought exercise, lets say you stop lifting and eat the worst shit you could imaginable. How much would you weigh before you literally couldn't gain anymore weight? 250? 350? 450? The most I've been was 360 at 6'3 due to injury and being out of physically intensive work. I gained 60lbs over the course of 4-6 months, and I was approaching the plateau. Id say I could make it to 400-450 before I literally couldnt eat to keep up with tdee. There are "people" who could easily pass 600. I have bad weight genetics, but I could never be 500 lbs+, let alone 600. Different side of the same coin, I know dudes who are 6ft who will never be 200lbs naturally despite forcing themselves to eat icecream and Mcdonalds as much as they could.

I absolutely agree with that. Yet the point still stands. Obesity is an addiction just like any other, psychologically and physiologically. While it wasn't you who got you addicted in this case, to continue to use is your and only your choice.

Life is never that simple, its both a choice and a product of genetics. One can outweigh the other but there are many factors at play. Obesity is most often a behavioral issue which in turns effects physiology.

    >A - Disregard it, they are "perfectly healthy" and continue their gross habits
    >B - Admit it, but are too weak to change, and continue their gross habits
    >C - Embrace it, and gleefully continue their gross habits
Rarely do people actually have the willpower to make a change and stick with it. Kudos to the few that do.

obesity is obviously not a choice because aside from weird fetishists nobody is fat voluntarily
stuffing your face with garbage and sitting on your ass all day is a choice

homierd also compares the futility of losing weight to accumulating wealth, not realizing that the former deals with excess while the latter deals with a deficit.
