Is starting from a low level an indication of our potential?
Posted on by Anonymous
I've started some weeks ago and I'm lifting the empty bar for pretty much every exercise. Some people say it is worrying and they argue it shows my genetics is poor. What do you think?
So you're basically saying I'm starting at a very low level LMAO. And yes, I've considered doing push-ups, but I don't know how to incorporate them to my routine.

Just do what you're doing right now and add pushups and pullups to it. Can do them everyday they don't tax your body much
4 sets to failure on both

Before starting lifting I was doing pushups everyday and I ended up feeling pain in my shoulders, so I stopped. Are you sure I should do push-ups everyday ? Without any rest day ?

Hmm Idk then, I always did a frickton of pushups and never had shoulders problems with them, just some wrist pain that I fixed by doing them with neutral position.
Maybe do them every other day then so you don't snap your shit up

Yes I also have wrist pain, even when I bench. I have to warm up a lot and yet I still feel pain. Regarding my shoulders, I figure out I wasn't doing push-ups correctly (my hands were not placed correctly, they were above my shoulders and not at the parallel as they should've been).

Make sure your joints are stacked when you bench, don't have your wrist bent backwards when holding the bar. (pic)
For pushups hand position is just variation, you can have them in front of your chest (hits shoulders more) in line with the chest, or behind the chest it's all valid.
To avoid wrist pain there's a lot of ways, one take the force away from your fingers and focus it on the bottom part of your palm, near the wrist.
You can also do them on your knuckels, or on rings/neutral grip if you have the equipment. Rings are the best way to do pushups I think, really great if you have them in your gym or home

My sweaty hands tend to swip, I know I have to start from the left-hand side position but when I do the exercise they gradually go to the right-hand side and it's pretty hard to replace them.
I was pretty bad when I started too, former cross country runner then sedentary for 6 years, so I've never really had strength. Started in the same place, barely benching the bar, couldn't squat because I had knee issues from running, then could only deadlift about 80lbs.
8 months in and numbers are:
Bench: 175, haven't maxed in a while but I think I could do 185
Squat: 235, same as above, knee didn't really gain any strength until a couple of months ago so I expect this to go up pretty rapidly
Deadlift: 345, could probably add on 15lbs or so
If you posted that body really just eat big with protein, creatine, and a frickton of water everyday and you'll be good.
judging by my family tree i might have shit genetics but you'll definitely get stronger just keep adding a little bit of weight each time.
Honestly, I did calisthenics for about a year on top of gym. I did the 100 pushups challenge, never got to 100 and even now I can do like 50 in a row.
I'd recommend looking up Hybrid Calisthenics. It has an excellent beginner friendly progression, starting from when you can't even do a single proper pushup/squat/pull up. Keep on going, brother!
My body was very similar to yours and with on-off training (not even proper fixed diet stuff), I got to Pic related in about a year (this is a few months old, now I also have abs) With proper diet and workout, you'll be there faster.
Nah don't listen to these bozos, you're just small and untrained of course you'll be weak
What are you repping on your exercises though?
I'm giving you my lifts for the holy trinity : I bench the empy bar, I RDL 40kg and I squat 40kg
For how many reps though? Once you get to 10 on bench for example you can already start adding weight
I started with those lifts, but I didn't manage to reach the 4*12 stage where you are supposed to add weight.
Do you do pushups? I think they're a must for lifters of your level

What difference do predictions make now? Just keep going and see what the future holds.

Interesting, what did you analyse to come up to such conclusion?

What does that mean? I'm Portuguese by the blood but grew up in France.
I started out where you did.

After a couple months some ab development.
Your a blank page and it's great.
Pretty impressive. I'm 175cm 65kg in the first picture, what are your measurements?
damn man, its been a few weeks. dont look to give up right at the start.
I'm not giving up, I'm just worried about my potential, since everyone (including people who went with me to the gym) told me I had a problem.
