We didn't evolve for any height. There are tribal people who still live in nature that grow to be taller than 6 foot and we also find skeletons of cavemen that were 5'3.
Your height depends on where you live. We don't really know what height we actually evolved for because we don't find enough skeletons of pre-historic Savannah hunters who were supposedly endurance hunters. That region just doesn't preserve bones well enough.

      You're moronic
Humans are just not getting back to the height that they were prior to the agricultural revolution
Malnourishment was never an issue for hunter-gatherer tribes.
They were physically and mentally superior to modern humans based on physical prowess and brain size.
What agriculture did was allow people to set roots instead of following their food around and set the foundations for modern c*vilization
Life expectancy was low because modern medicine significantly cuts down on that child/ infant mortality rate.

Hunter gatherers only had very very few numbers of people in any given area (a good thing) but it made them virtually incapable of fending off or resisting demographic replacement when farmers started spreading out from Anatolia or where ever the frick it was.

Truth is most of them probably willingly made the change. It is easy to romanticize the hunter gatherers but the reality is that the vast bulk of them seem to have readily accepted the agricultural lifestyle and they probably did so for very pragmatic reasons.

They have very low rates of coronary disease. Their life expectancy is low because their infant mortality is really high due to them living in what is basically the wilderness and not having access to modern medicine. If you have two kids and one dies one day after being born and the other lives to 100 then the life expectancy will only be 50.

This means nothing. We could find a distant planet one day with fruit that cures all diseases and extend our life by decades, despite never eating it once in human history.

All while disease has existed all throughout human history from eating the "foods we have evolved to eat".

      Anonymous

True, but it would have to be something our bodies have evolved to favor, even if it turns out to be coincidental (just like in your example), so what our evolution has favored is still optimal, wether it's naturally found (wild game) or man-made (artificial foods, extraterrestrial foods--sounds weird, huh?)

  10. 2 years ago

    >In theory you're eating the foods we've been evolved to eat.
    No you aren't.
Domestication of animals and plants over the last 12,000+ years have changed them to the core, especially in relation to the over 200,000 year old history of the homosexual sapiens.
Fruits are larger, contains smaller seeds, more sugar, less fiber, are easier to digest and access etc.
Animals contain more fat, have a higher percentage of muscle to connective tissue, we eat less parts of it and again gaining access to them requires less effort.
Living like our cavemen ancestors is nigh impossible simply because the foods are no longer the same.

Probably nothing wrong with the diet itself but the name and 'theory' annoy me. Half the food in that pic didn't even exist in the paleolithic, and actual paleolithic diets could be pretty much anything from feasting on mammoth or salmon to living off of seaweed and acorns or eating bugs all day. It was usually better than eating almost nothing but grains but we don't need to eat like that anymore so who cares? Just eat meat and avoid added sugar and whatever.

Because it is the first step to realizing that saturated fats aren't bad for you and PUFAs are absolutely terrible for you. This fact alone makes "the mainstream" nutrition advisors (average doctor, nutritionists, the mainstream media, etc.) go absolutely bonkers because you realize that the rest of the "advice" they give is utter garbage and the complete opposite of the truth.

The average diet advice perfectly parallels the average health of an individual in any society. How more people don't understand this common sense, I don't know. But when you realize that, you realize that mainstream diet advice in the US (40% obese, 70% overweight) is really, really bad. Same in Europe, because their stats are similar.

      >Because it is the first step to realizing that saturated fats aren't bad for you and PUFAs are absolutely terrible for you
      >This fact alone makes "the mainstream" nutrition advisors (average doctor, nutritionists, the mainstream media, etc.) go absolutely bonkers
This is taught at medical school, albeit with more nuance and detail.

        Anonymous

Are you the same guy I responded to like a week ago? I just finished a module on lipids (I'm in medical school) and I learned the lipid hypothesis word-for-word: LDL build-up in the blood causes a diffusion of LDL into the endothelium (yes, for real, just a spontaneous diffusion), causing an immune response and eventually coronary artery disease.

It makes 0 logical sense because it would mean the sole predictor of artery disease is LDL (AKA HDL doesn't matter, and this is not a true fact) and it doesn't explain why coronary "artery" disease only happens in arteries, not veins.

Anyway, this is still the mainstream idea blasted on every mainstream media site and taught to every nutritionist. If you're denying that, you are just being silly.

          Anonymous

          >Are you the same guy I responded to like a week ago?
No. Where do you study (doesn't have the be the uni)? I'm from the UK.
          >LDL diffuses
It's facilitated by transfer proteins; this has been replicated in vitro.
          >HDL
Is atheroprotective due to the RCT pathway among other reasons, is my understanding.
          >why coronary "artery" disease only happens in arteries, not veins?
The primary candidate for venosclerosis is in something like CABG. This wasn't covered in my main nutrition module, it came up as an anecdote in a cardiovascular lecture, but I'd hazard a guess that as saphenous grafts have been shown to have evidence of "atherosclerosis", it's something to do with the pressure of the vessel.
          >Nutritionist
Every nutritionist I've met has been fat and moronic, including my lecturers.

Anyway, my take was we don't understand the entire process but enough has been replicated in vitro + overwhelming population data that LDL is a factor, to the point where continued statin prescriptions make sense.

            Anonymous

Southern US. Two points I want to make about what you're saying. First, no amount of population data will ever prove anything. That is why epidemiology is such a horrible science. It doesn't matter if 40%, 80% or 100% of people with type 2 diabetes are obese. Such a correlation would never prove that obesity causes diabetes. In fact, the same thing that causes obesity causes diabetes. But epidemiology forces us to be myopic, and that's why I hate it so much. Still got an A on my epidemiology exam though heh.

The second is that yes, damage to vessels is behind CAD, not the amount of LDL you have. How much LDL you have doesn't matter at all. When you control for HDL levels, high LDL levels have nothing to do with CAD. Metabolic dysfunction and inflammation is behind heart disease, just like those things are behind every other disease. I haven't read this research article yet but another anon recommended it to me. I'm going to read it tomorrow. You might enjoy it:

            https://journals.lww.com/co-endocrinology/Fulltext/9900/Assessing_cardiovascular_disease__looking_beyond.21.aspx

When I had a course on nutrition at school they told me that saturated fat from butter stays in your body permanently and eventually there is enough to block your arteries and cause a heart attack. This was taught in an actual school as was stated as if it was a scientific fact.

        Anonymous

Yup. An explanation for why seed oils (invented last century) are good for you and why butter is bad: "Solid at room temperature = solid in your arteries, Liquid at room temperature = liquid in your arteries."
