yes. this is origin of leg day and chicken legs thingy. just walking uphill/upstairs daily is enough to not look freaky beacause of too thin legs for upper body.

cities beed to be walkable and cyclable amerifat. frick cars. useless for normal people. waste of time and money for status accessory.

Not going to read all that shit but yes we kind of almost purposeful avoidance to it.
When you live in a country where you're expected to have a car the people that don't are usually either underage, poor or similarly can't be trusted with one, non-earners. If you want your property and family to be safe it becomes exceedingly easy to do that by putting them some place off the public transportation lines and places poors can't walk to from. Suburbs. As the criminal element has continued to increase in cities because of the drug trade this contrast has gotten even more intense. With often whole sections of cities going without road maintence because they're not economically active enough to warrant it. It's sort of a grim reality but the rise in non-pedestrian friendly infrastructure was an organically created issue because of people insulating themselves from criminals and turbulent property investment.

your just unfit and mentally ill from husterical news and all these idiotic action flicks you watch. it rots brain. youvare orders of magnitude more likely to die frombl heart attack, cancer or car crash than from assault.

There's a 97% chance I walk more than you more often. The reason you're more likely to die of a heart attack is because of how effectively white flight curbed the murder rates in cities and how seldom people who work in those cities go through or into the shitty districts.

People innately avoid areas they feel unsafe even more so as they get older. It's like how women don't walk alone at night. They just know that it can't happen if they don't provide the oppertunity so they don't. If they did we'd see a lot more of it. Just because a danger doesn't present itself on a graph doesn't mean it's not there it just means you're not asking the right question.

I really don't understand why people especially go onto IST go into a rage at the thought of being able to walk and do stuff. They legitimately get furious, like this

This concept where living somewhere where you are not locked into owning or even just having to drive a car everywhere to do literally anythign you ever want to do just makes them furious. I don't get it. And OP, when you see how angry Americans get at the concept, you'll understand why everyone is obese.

its about 100 minutes of walking for me, not a huge ask but maybe not the best for a lot of people, especially in places with a lot of rain or if you don't own a treadmill

No, I get it. I've walked before and I can walk 30km without complaining but to do it every day without it being part of what you do seems time consuming when I can just go to the gym 4-5 times a week and get all my exercise done.
I guess it would be fine if you do it with a gf in the evenings but you'd have to live in a really nice place to have good walking trails.

you have to manage your money a bit, but its not usually too much of a hassle, and if you've got an actual skilled job like programming you can do quite well

i was really lucky because my job was a natural fit for working overseas. i started writing years ago because i hated jobs that required me to work closely with people. since i liked to write i just kept looking up jobs on places like Upwork.com. eventually i found some clients that were reliable enough for me to be safe, and i realised i could do the same thing i do at home while travelling

I'm also really lucky in that my parents have enough storage space that i can leave my stuff with them. i was renting with my friends up until then, but they all started getting married and having kids (which I'm not interested in), so everything just lined up

if you're interested in knowing more there are people who arent as lucky as me but who earn a lot more with information like the digital nomad subreddit. you get a lot weirdos and dicks there as well, but if you have stuff where you live and concerns about moving there could be a lot more helpful info there than what I'm supplying

i would recommend a trial run first though, a lot of people romanticise the idea and get fricked if its not a good fit for them. I'm pretty autistic and don't get lonely so it works well for me, but

America needs to be nuked man. Imagine shitting yourself over having to walk for 10 mins. People in London walk like 30 minutes to get a couple drinks

      Anonymous

America is not as enjoyable to walk in. Besides NYC (and maybe a few other such cities), everything is very spread out and you truly get the sense that it's designed for cars. There is a death of visual stimuli; it's a whole lot of nothing and parking lots between wherever you are and wherever you want to be. It's also unpleasant that in America, using the sidewalks seems to be reserved for the most repugnant sorts of people, whereas in England, it's mainly normal, harmless-seeming people walking about.

A 10 minute walk in America thus is more comparable to an hour walk in England.

As an aside, I became asthmatic (started wheezing and had to use an inhaler) after moving to and walking/cycling by a very major 6-lane road in the states. It resolved itself after I moved away.

        Anonymous

It's an issue that's slowly being resolved in the states. We're slowly but surely making the cities more walkable/public transport friendly. Biggest problem that can't be solved however is that most American cities are built for the car and suburban infrastructure. I never experienced this because I grew up in NY where even those who lived in the suburbs could still commute into Manhattan using the rail roads + public transport. But living in Houston now, I see that everything was built explicitly for the car and that a ton of rail infrastructure will have to be built into place in order to commute to the city from your suburban home/neighborhood.

if you try to walk outside your 15 minute zone (5 minutes walk by real standards), you're either walking to a significantly poorer area (and are likely to get robbed and stabbed), or the Hebrew Enforcers will execute you on the spot for intruding on protected grounds.

Speaking as an American, yes. It’s mostly a fatty problem, but there is definitely a convenience culture that has made people not only loathe walking, but go great lengths to actively avoid it even if it is the simpler option. Ever taken a trip to Costco? The spots in the very back are wide open, and in the front you got fatties circling the parking lot waiting on people in the closest spots to load up and leave so they can take it. By the time they pull into their spots, I’m already in the store.

Used to work a security job years back at a medical facility. My desk was on the second story of our parking garage. Right next to it was a set of stairs with only 10 steps to get to the first floor, and an elevator for the wheelchair people. Every day I’d watch the fatass nurses opt to take the elevator instead of just walking 10 fricking steps.

This is unironically true outside of eastern cities. If you see someone walking to the store you assume they are homeless or poor. When I’m abroad walking seems normal. When I’m here I feel like most other Americans- who the frick wants to walk somewhere, even if you’re going there to exercise, kek

duh. here in eastern europe its rare for man to have less than 21 inch legs. for normalweights and overweight but not obese ones normal leg size is 22 to 25 for guys who dont lift. walk and cycle.

For any eurogays here, America was not designed for walking or public transport unless you live in a big, and I mean big city, like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, or Miami. If you live anywhere else you're not getting anywhere fast without a car.

We go for walks for fun as a pleasant way to pass a Sunday afternoon in the countryside.
Walking is worth doing for its own sake.

My neighbor once drove to our town sub shop. It is literally on the other side of our block. I was walking home from the gym and I saw them load into the car, by the time I made it to my house I saw them unloading from the car.

Taking cabs in the US is something you do when something is several miles away or doesn't have pedestrian access, not something you do when you can walk there in 5-10 minutes which is literally like a few blocks if that. The hotel probably ran free shuttles to many different places, or a specific event he didn't know about but other people did, or a beach that was nicer and much further away than the part 10 minutes from his hotel room, and they're commonly taken by large vacationing families that can't just walk the streets with their 3+ kids. The second half of his story about "short sweaty americans" becoming openly hostile over a 4 minute walk and then referring to him as "the walker" borders on the surreal and is obviously completely invented.

    and the literal

    reddit spacing

    of "The Walker,

    that fricking wienersucker!"

in hindsight the whole thing reads like some insufferable sissy homosexual's headfiction to cope with the fact that everyone he meets is annoyed by his behavior and they all want to get away from him ASAP. the only truthful part to the whole story is where he says he's "spluttering nonsense" except it applies to the whole thing rather than his mr. innocentvictim culturedman reaction to the two "I AM VERY SILLY" americans shouting and throwing pastries on the ground and demanding he pay for it and clean it up for some reason, because, you know, all of those fancy nicaraguan pastry boutiques have wait staff-- but not janitors-- and take your bill at the end of the meal instead of customers having already paid for their own donuts at the counter.

Well it's not like there's a 15 minute vs 5 minute walk to a grocery store type of choice with them. It's more like 50 minute walk because that's how their infrastructure was designed.
I like walking too but I'd definitely be pissed if I had to go several kilometers along the road just so I can find a crosswalk to reach the other side.

For me, cycling to a supermarket is a 35 minute trip there and 45 minute trip back (steep elevation changes). If I was a poor homosexual who had to suck dicks for loose change like you, the routine activity of getting a few day's worth of groceries would be a 2-hour ordeal. In reality my wife just uses her phone to order a wagie to shop for her and load it all in the car.
              >Just live in a city cuckbox
No thanks, did that in my 20s and am ready to grow up. I like having a home gym in my basement, a huge yard for my kids to play in, a big kitchen, and no noise at all from neighbors at night.

I'm Swiss and it's natural for many people to walk 10 minutes or more to go somewhere, but it's getting worse and worse though.
I know a few people who'll take their car so they can by a french tacos instead of walking 3 minutes.

My favorite "story" is from a fat coworker.
We work in an industrial zone and it's around 3 minutes of walk from the bus stops to the company. Thing there are 2 at the same distance, but one is at higher altitude and the other lower.
So the modified her working hours so she can always walk to the bus stop that has a descending path.
Also once a year we have to go help the manual workers do an inventory and she can't stop talking about how much she dreads this day at least 3 months in advance.

I traveled 3 months across the US without a car, I can't even remember all the stuff that happened but that was a crazy experience.

You cant fight your environment. Walking doesnt exist in the US and the twerps that get into a panic about 15 minute cities are gonna have to accept that it's never gonna happen here or spend the rest of their life in despair.
Lesiurely afternoon strolls with your wife/kids/dog? American.
    Nightwalking? American.
Driving innawoods to hike for a few days? American.
Walking to do basic errands? Never gonna happen unless you live in section 8 or are some other kind of urban hive dweller. Not spiritually American.

its ranjeet coping, you can tell because no american uses their cars to drive to places to hike (you can go on google maps, pick any carpark, go to streetview, and then spend hours looking for anything that looks like its seen dirt and will never find anything)
you can also tell because afternoon strolls with the kids is something that less than 1% of people do (everyone else works 12 hours a day 6 days a week to pay their rent)

See now imagine this, but with American cities that are 40/50/60% black. Also imagine the same people who advocate for walkable cities are the same people who advocate for abolishing the police and lessening the punishment for crimes because putting black people in jail is racist. You will begin to understand why Americans do not want walkable cities.

Yes. I'm an American. I live half mile from a grocery store that I walk to once or twice a week to pick things up from. I live in a small town in California.

People look at me like I'm insane for doing this highly rigid 10 minutes of walking. They cope by assuming I'm poor or don't have a car or can't drive. None of those things are true, I just like the exercise and it keeps me from over buying/over consuming.

Most Americans think its too inconvenient, too difficult, or too time consuming to walk anywhere.
