Is weight loss a privilege?

A colleague argued that weight loss is a privilege in society because:

(i) poor people can't afford healthy food.
(ii) even if they could, they don't have the time to cook because of how much they work
(iii) fast food is so cheap and easy to get that it's only logical for them to survive on it
(iv) they don't have the time/money to exercise

What do we think about this?

The point is that they are eating shitty fast food and then making the argument that they can't afford healthier food. They could just eat less shitty food, which would save them money and help them lose weight. They're just dumb.

Imagine still not getting this simple concept.

BEING WEALTHY MAKES IT A LOT EASIER.

IT DOESN'T MEAN WEALTHY PEOPLE DON'T GET FAT.

IT DOESN'T MEAN POOR PEOPLE HAVE TO GET FAT.

IT MEANS HAVING MONEY MAKES IT WAY, WAY, WAY EASIER TO BE HEALTHY.

          Understand now?

That's not what the word privilege means.
In every woke ass way the word is applied, it's an insurmountable advantage. Something inherent to the characteristic.
It's harder, but not a privilege. No one is arguing that. You're trying to claim it's an inevitable result to be fat when you're not rich.
You're fat and you could do better but won't.

              Anonymous

I'm not fat at all but I do feel the pinch when trying to eat healthy, especially with current inflation.

Supposedly, being white is a privilege, being male is a privilege, those things are not "insumountable advantages" at all. In today's world they're clear disadvantages.

It's an odd way to apply the word "privilege" because normally privilege would be applied to the condition the person is in. You would call the being wealthy a privilege and easier weight loss would be an advantage of that privilege, not the privilege itself. Maybe that's the problem people have with using the term here. But on the other hand, to play devil's advocate, you could say going to university is a "privilege". So the phrase in OP can work, but I get that it sounds very clunky and suspicious to call it a privilege, I just want to make the point that it's vastly easier to lose weight when you have a lot of money.

The bigger question is to think why your colleague is so fricked up in the head. World leftist framework:

    >People can't be held responsible for the consequences of their actions
    >Bad outcomes aren't their fault, therefore they don't deserve negative consequences for their actions
    Therefore:
    >Massive state intervention to confiscate wealth from the successful to improve the lives of others, even if those people are fricked because they deserve it

So that's what's at stake here and why you've got this b***h reasoning.

    1. Less food costs less. It's not ideal but eating half the shit you eat HAS to be less.
    2. Poor people don't work that much! That's why most poor people are poor. Loads are unemployment or underemployed. The image of some poor person laboring 80 hours in a mine and having nothing is a leftist meme from commieville. 34% of American families making less than $9000 a year watch over 5 hours of TV a day. Holy frick imagine if they cooked while they watched TV.
    3. Poor people spend around 10% of their food stamp money on soda. So right there you know they're not optimizing purchases for health. They could stop drinking soda, period and then have more money for better food. Or just not, and then lose weight.
    4. Fast food is not truly optimized for calories. Poor people are stupid and so turn to fast food for entertainment because it's affordable enough to be fun and providing immediate gratification

    >(i) poor people can't afford healthy food.
Only true if you're on a high meat, dairy, and protein diet. I live on 90% starch based carbs and they're dirt cheap.
    >(ii) even if they could, they don't have the time to cook because of how much they work
This is only partly true. Having more free time allowed me to educate myself and learn how to save both time and money. I can cook an entire week's worth of food in minutes now. Yet I remember struggling in the past.
    >(iii) fast food is so cheap and easy to get that it's only logical for them to survive on it
Fast food is neither cheap nor time saving to survive on. Takes less time and money to prepare your own.
    >(iv) they don't have the time/money to exercise
Takes barely no time or money to exercise unless you want to. If you don't have fifteen minutes a day to exercise, then there's something seriously wrong with your time management.

In short, if a disabled idiot like me can do this, then everybody else can do it too. They simply make excuses.

No. Being poor sucks and they eat their feelings. I’ve been there. You can get a stack of chicken thighs for $10 and grill or bake them with $1 seasoning and you now have the main course for three dinners. Add in broccoli and carrots and maybe some fruit, $20 total for delicious meals to last the better part of the week. Compare that to $10 per meal minimum at mcdonald’s
The great thing about eating healthy is that you now have the energy and drive to prepare more healthy food. “Time to cook” is not an excuse. Instead of 30s in the microwave it’s 5m on the stove, 30m mostly unattended in the oven or on the grill. You have that time, there is no excuse. It simply takes a little willpower to get past the hurdle of feeling like unmotivated shit when you eat microwave dinners and takeout. But the ball rolls itself after you push.

    >poor people can't afford healthy food.
I'm poor, frozen veggies are extremely cheap. Also if you're losing weight you will buy less food and save money.
    >even if they could, they don't have the time to cook because of how much they work
You don't eat as much. Also literally just eat meat and veggies. Microwave some fricking broccoli. Takes 4 minutes.
    >fast food is so cheap and easy to get that it's only logical for them to survive on it
It's not cheap though. Every time I get it it costs 30 dollars. Are they just getting the dollar menu?
    >they don't have the time/money to exercise
It's free and takes one hour to walk for a few miles every day. Literally all you need unless you're trying to get buff.
    >T. Lost 60 pounds

    >(i) poor people can't afford healthy food.
    Bollocks.
    >(ii) even if they could, they don't have the time to cook because of how much they work
Also bollocks and a cheap way of weasling out of the first point.
    >(iii) fast food is so cheap and easy to get that it's only logical for them to survive on it
    Also bollocks.
    >(iv) they don't have the time/money to exercise
The same point as (ii) so also bollocks.

I'm guessing your colleague doesn't actually know any poor people. Most of them are poor because they make horrible life and financial decisions, and don't work as much as your colleague seems to think they do.

when i was poor and lived in the ghetto i got very fat becase

    >nothing but goyslop and Black personfood within 5 miles
    >apartment was a shithole and miserable to cook in
    >even when i did cook, small sink, no dishwasher, shit tools, whole place smelled because no ventialtion
    >working exhausting job all the time and by the time i got home i had to get ready for work, no time to cooking
    >cheap locals gyms are fricking awful and you never want to go back because theyre full of morons, Black folk, fatties, and sexual predators. literally Black folk would eat chips in the sauna and then leave their trash there. wetbacks would go in groups of 8 and hog an entire dumbbell rack

    (i) poor people can't afford healthy food.
    >kek no. I'm poor af, I work at a gas station and I afford eating healthy just fine, the people who make this excuse don't realize they're spending $20 a day on cigs and "diet" soda
(ii) even if they could, they don't have the time to cook because of how much they work
    >if they actually worked a lot they wouldn't be poor, making money is only half the battle they also need to be able to resist spending it all. They have plenty of time to cook, the problem is it would cut into the time they spend watching TV or scrolling on their phone.
(iii) fast food is so cheap and easy to get that it's only logical for them to survive on it
    >Yeah it's so cheap paying $10 per meal per person. No exaggerated, last time I looked at a fast food delivery menu that's the minimum it would've cost
(iv) they don't have the time/money to exercise
    >see response to point ii

I skip meals all the time because I'm poor.

Fast food isn't cheap. It ends up being exponentially more money than a simple home cooked meal. What it is, is easy. And that appeals to lazy or just tired people.

Not all poor people are lazy, some genuinely work hard and are exhausted and just want something easy and don't know better because they haven't been taught life skills by their family or society. Others are just lazy, especially the ones who are on food stamps and benefits. They oftentimes have plenty of spare time, no exhausting job and just have to look after their kids. These people are responsible for their own predicament, however there is something to be said for "don't feed wild animals because it creates a dependent population". Leftists have created such a group in society now and it's a self perpetuating pit of misery. Rife with child abuse and creating dysfunctional adults shitting up schools, prisons and pretty much everything they come into contact with.

Rice and beans are dirt cheap, hilariously so if you buy in bulk. Vegetables are dirt cheap. Chicken, pork, canned tuna, ground beef, all priced to move.
    >2
Meal prep for an entire week takes me, at most, an hour, and considering I'm usually having a beer and listening to a podcast or something, I'm hardly being as efficient with my time as I could be.
    >3
It really isn't, though. Even if I'm, say, only eating twice a day, two triple cheeseburgers from McDonalds both meal, that's about $14USD a day, skipping breakfast, so you figure $98/week... when my weekly grocery bill is, at most, $50... and I get to eat three square meals a day.
    >4
30 minutes a day of walking/jogging/running and calisthenics isn't just effective, it's free.
    ---
What I'm saying, it's all cope, excuses, and bullshit. These people somehow find the time to play Call of Duty/Madden into the AM, binge whatever they've been told to care about on their streaming service(s) of choice, and religiously follow whatever sports teams they're vicariously living through, but you can't find 2.5-5 hours in the week to invest in your health? BULL. SHIT.

You know... there was a time I didn't have much, I didn't have a pot to piss in, or a window to throw it out of, but you know what I did? I decided to do something about it, I decided to stop blaming fortune, fate, and most importantly, everyone else for my own situation, and I resolved to become a better version of myself.

And you know what I learned? """Privilege""" has a funny way of coming to those who earn it.

So, in closing, nah brah, WEAKNESS DETECTED, OPINION REJECTED.

    (i) Bullshit, healthy food is much cheaper than fast food. I can get half a kilogram of chicken breast, one head of broccoli or 5 kg of potatoes for the price of one Bigmac. Sure, if you compare fast food to "muh organic gmo free bio-food", the latter is going to be more expensive, but even the cheap veggies and raw meat that you can buy at any supermarket is much healthier than fastfood.
(ii) Statistically, people with higher incomes work significantly more hours per week than those with small incomes. As a young lawyer, I worked 60+ hours a week and still found time to prep meals and get some exercise done (by cycling to work and lifting weights in the evening).
    (iii) see (i)
    (iv) see (ii)

So next time you see your friend, call him out as the massive homosexual he is.

The only instance where this is true is if you're basically destitute and the country you live in is also destitute. Most other people are just using it as an excuse.

    moronic.
    i) They can afford it, they choose not to buy it. Fast food is not cheaper than eating like a functional human. This myth really has to stop.
ii) Show me poors who work more than non-poors
iii) It is easy. That's why poors eat it. That's why they're fat and poor, not because of the fast food itself, but because they have poor people mindsets. They take low effort paths and don't delay gratification.
iv) Running and push ups is the cheapest exercise routine, and exercising is not the most effective way to lose weight, eating less is.

I think the problem is ignorance and laziness. Poverty in the west obviously has a large overlap with those issues.
That said, nobody who takes even a cursory glance at the rest of the world would think like this. Poor people are generally thin.

I've been having issues lately with constipation and bowel irregularity. My doctor recommended I try taking metamucil, a soluble fiber supplement. I went to the pharmacy and was surprised to see how much sugar is in it. It's practically a milkshake. The active ingredient is Psyllium husk fiber, and the pharmacy had a product which is just psyllium powder with no extra sugar or flavoring. Yet despite being only one ingredient and a store brand, it is MORE expensive than the metamucil which is Psyllium powder, sugar, flavoring, and food dye.

Why is it more expensive to buy the healthy alternative when that has less stuff in it?

What about beans, rice, and oatmeal? Those are still cheaper than fast food.

Just throw some meat in there and that is 90% of human existence after agriculture was invented.

I have a hard time believing the time argument because everytime I go to a fast food joint aside from Chick-Fil-A, I end up spending more time getting fast food than it would take for me to fry some scrambled eggs and wash some cherry tomatoes. On average, I wait 10-15 minutes for "fast" food. And that's because I go at odd hours. During a lunch or dinner rush, I'm waiting close to 20 minutes if not longer between arriving at the restaurant and getting my food. I couldn't imagine how long fatty's orders take to make, probably 30-40 minutes.
Maybe its just where I live, but fastfood here is not at all fast. I'm not even a good cook, and I can slap together good food within 10 minutes tops.
If I'm really crunched for time like I was in college, I take a few hours on the weekend to batch cook for the whole coming week.

Poor people get SNAP EBT benefits for hundreds of dollars a month that they can use on ANY healthy food, they just choose not to, because poor people are usually lazy as frick and want shit they can microwave, or, they pick up fast food. Poor people who get those benefits rarely work, and even those that do, rarely work more than any of the rest of us, so it's a shitty excuse.
As a landlord of a 15 unit apartment complex in a rural midwest town that's filled with low-income whites, I will safely say that poor people LOVE to spend every minute making excuses for WHY they can't seem to get anything done, yet, they're always around doing jack shit wasting time. If half of my tenants spent as much time utilizing the exceptional job market where they could be making $20/hour easy instead of finding excuses to NOT work, they wouldn't be nearly as poor, but there's also a very strong correlation between income and intelligence in 90% of cases. Poor people tend to be stupid, and for them, "getting one over" on someone above them is better than just doing right by themselves and their families. I've seen it firsthand for years, and the cycle never changes.
Also, fast food is no longer cheap, it costs about $8-10 to get a meal at most places now, whereas you could make some chicken, rice and vegetables for about half that and get FAR better nutrition. But, poor people also HATE having to educate themselves, so that's that. And the excuse about time/money is bullshit. Anyone can go for a walk/run. Anyone can do calisthenics. Anyone can go find a makeshift pull-up bar or go to a playground. Anyone can work on doing push-ups. Anyone can grab a rock and hold it to add resistance for squats, or lift rocks as a deadlift/row replacement. It's always excuses, and anyone who coddles these people is as fricking moronic as the poor people who can't get their fricking lives together.

As a college university student, I lost 10kg while everyone else put on the fresher 5kg.
You want to know why? Cause I was poor and I starved.
1 meal a day of noodle soup, and then if I was still hungry at 7 I would eat at the dining hall.
People who complain about losing weight should just chop off their heads and drop 115kg
