      OP, just read the sticky. SL5x5 is a good beginner program. Get properly strong before you do anything else. Don’t bulk too hard and you won’t look like a powerfatty.

          It's easy to build strength as a beginner for at least 2-3+ months, and the increased strength will make other types of training more effective.
          Example:
          Your max squat is 135lbs and you try doing "hypertrophy" training with only like 100lbs.
          OR
          You get your max squat to 225+ in 2 months of strength training, then you can do hypertrophy training at 200. Much more effective.

    It depends on your starting point. Squat-bench-deadlift, just-add-five-pounds programs are considered the basics because prior to fitness being blasted everywhere by youtube and tiktok influencers, most people in USA started lifting in early high school at football strength and conditioning program, and thats how just how training is done in that context.

    You need to be careful if you are not an in-shape 14 year old, as these programs progress by increasing the weight (read: forces on your muscles, tendons, connective tissues), as fast as possible, rather than increasing reps or sets. If you have been sitting at a desk or spent your youth playing computer games (we are on IST after all), you might want to consider taking things a bit slower, use lighter weight and higher rep ranges, focus on stretching and injury prevention, trying different excercises to see what feels good, and not lose interest etc.

    Yes, max it out properly until you're running 3x5s and still not recovering even after deloading once or twice
    Then switch to any intermediate program
    I went with 5/3/1 variations
    This plan got me to a 1500+ total

    no. beginners should go 3x15 with at least 10 different lifts and then lower the reps and raise the weight as they become more comfortable in the gym. this will increase muscle density and promote a greater ROM vs 5x5.

    I'm doing modified SL with zercher squats and floor press since I got no rack or bench + light accessories and bodyweigt on off days. It's nice to lift 3 or 4 tons during a session, makes you feel capable. I think progress was faster on pure SS years ago but this is better rounded, and I'm in a slight deficit.

    No, it's shit.
    If you go for 5 reps, it means you are lifting heavy weights to failure, which means 5+ minutes of rest time.
    5 sets are WAY too fricking much. You are going to be in the gym for 2+ hours and you won't be able to recover.
    Don't do more than 3 sets when you are doing heavy compounds.

    Not reading the rest of this gay thread, but i suggest doing 10 reps a set when you start.

    5 reps a set is fine, but if you are new to lifting your form is going to need work. By doing 10 it forces you to use lower weights and reduce your chance of injury.

    You could do 5x10, but i do 3x10.

    Also dont listen to range of motion gays, if you can do full range of motion great, but if you still feel it in the expected muscle without the full range id say stick with it. Then when you have more experience you can work on the full range.
    For me it was squat/bicep curls. My body had a hard time doing the full range so i do partial range and found other exercises to hit the area of the muscle i was missing.

    Just figure out your bodies limits and dont take universal advice as that lead me to snap city and I wouldnt want a new person have the same thing, i basically took a year off lifting after only doing it for a few months.

    Good luck lifting.
