Lifting absolutely does contribute to fighting strength, but not as much as normies would think. It’s like a strength/size X training type equation. If two people with zero training fight, the bigger and stronger one will win. If two fighters with equivalent skill fight and one is 145lbs and the other is 220lbs the bigger one will win 100% of the time.

Lifting only contributes to fighting strength, if you already know the technique

Most people who train boxing and bjj arent really good fighters. If you start as a newbie, youll need your 2 years to know how to fight. Someone who fights in bars has a different kind of experience and is used to much harder strikes than a sportsman. Sure he hasnt got a chance against a pro. But if you take a mid bar fighter vs a mid boxer/bjj the odds are completely random. Your take is moronic and you have never been in a street fight and neither fought someone in the gym who was more than 25lbs heavier than u.

      >being strong isn't always going to make you massive
Correct. You can train specifically for strength only with heavy weights pushing your limit and 1-2 reps. Then for cardio over 20 reps, the more the better. Danger zone triggering mostly hyperthrophy without strength or cardio gains is in 6-14 reps range. Danger zone because nobody should want useless muscle mass. It's about as useless as fat.

Strength is strength, if you can OHP 120kg, Squat 250kg and Deadlift 300kg it certainly won't hurt, especially if you are fighting some twink
In a street fight where there are no rules, if somebody is much bigger than you, lets say 40-50kg difference and he's strong and athletic, not just fat, you're getting your ass kicked.
Some 0.0001% of the super elite fighters like Demetrius Johnson may be able to pull something off, but you are not him.
Anyone who thinks that because they trained casually for a few years, will be able to beat someone much bigger and stronger in a street fight is delusional.

        The worst fricking idea...
Grapplers don't fricking train against people several weight classes above them. If you try to chokehold someone who's a lot bigger than you he's just gonna lift you up and drive you into the concrete.
The real weakness of an inexperienced fighter is shitty defense and accuracy so you'd be better of trying to knock him out and tiring him out before he can grab you.
You can also power through a lot of holds if you're significantly stronger.
BJJ guys really have an awfully distorted view of their effectiveness because of MMA history.

A bodybuilder doesn't know how to properly move and use his strength in a fight though. And gases out very fast, bloated muscles sucking up oxygen. If you train combat sports you get to train against huge athletic guys too. So you have at least some idea of your own limitations and how to approach a big guy.

Fighting is fighting though, big strong guys are still dangerous. If a small guy trys to stand and throw with a big buy he's got to be careful. There is always a boxers chance. Why I prefer to grapple bigger guys.

      >Strength is strength
Objectively wrong. A large portion of strength is developed from training the nervous system. So while you may be more conditioned this wont necessary transfer over to fighting. Untrained muscle mass is just more tissue to feed and more oxygen to burn. This also doesnt even take into account genetics of muscle fiber type which many lifters are cursed with a dominance of slow twitch fiber. The only gym work i would concede on making you inherently better at fighting would be those that train explosive movements and those that train pulling and cardio.

        Anonymous

Kys moron. You're so high on theorycrart it hurts. All fibers contract at approx same speed. There's a neural threshold to activate but it only matters in training, in a real fight or flight you get flooded with adrenaline and engage all motor units. Explosive work is too fast for grappling and too slow for striking which requires double contraction. You're shit at lifting and you don't fight.

      Opposite really.
Bodybuilders/powershitters want the tough guy badass rep without actually fighting anyone. They want to be able to bully smaller people with no repercussions. The fact that there are "weaker" people who could choke the life out of them makes them feel insanely insecure and causes massive coping as seen in this thread and many others. Ask some gym monkey if they could beat NBA/NFL players at their game and most will admit no. Ask them if they could beat up WORLD CHAMPION fighters and they think they can despite never fighting.

One might even say that there is noticeable cross-polination between lifting, fighting, rock climbing, dance, etc. I don't know where OP got it in his head that there's no correlation with muscles and fighting at all. We all kind of like exercise and, often times, are the most open to trying new types of exercise.

        Sad cope
Eddie Hall isn't a fighter at all. He is too arrogant to train properly and made a complete fool out of himself fighting Hafbjorn. Eddie Hall can't beat up anyone his own size. Yet he as a complete idiot can dominate MMA by picking on small guys. This is why weight classes exist.

          Anonymous

His opponents look like tiktokers/instagram stars who sometimes dabble in MMA. In what world are they training properly while Eddie's not? Eddie was training to fight someone his own size before IIRC an injury happened. I'm not even saying that weight classes shouldn't exist, what the frick are you talking about? Nobody's arguing the shitty argument you thought up in your own head.

Sort of. It’s about weight classes. But it’s also about punching someone in the head. A skinny guy who has fighting skill can knock out a big guy by punching him in the head. Once you get to the point where you’re grappling and wrestling though, a big guy has a huge advantage. A bigger arm or leg on a stronger body just pushes the other guy away better, but doesn’t really help him punch a head better. For strike fighting, muscles don’t help much though.

That's true. But it would be kinda boring. People want to see mostly fast and agile fighters who can grapple just enough to dominate the opponent and punch him repeatedly in the face, not two fricking 200kg bears hugging each other until one taps

my dude you clearly havent seen the freak fights back in the day of the freakish giants/fat fricks getting absolutely BTFO by small and skinny guys

Size and strength is good if you have skill. Skill amplifies you size and strength. Yes if youre 200kg worlds strongest man you may be able to crush a 60kg man if you land on him.

but youre not that guy pal.

100kg of stiff gym muscle and youre going to sleep or limping from a few leg kicks

Nobody is smart enough to defensively kickbox then box someone on their back leg and or throwing pussy shit.

Youn can actually slide in from kickboxing range to box someone down from movement/kicking stance. I know this because I can kick harder than probably anyone you've ever seen. Stop moving back off the check, I block or stomp the opponents leg to get close. Doesn't work on someone who has a strong side kick.

For the heaviest weight class, you’re right. Fat gives you a slight disadvantage at dodging punches, kicks, bobbing, weaving, speed, endurance, but a huge advantage at pinning someone. Because fat is so spongy and jelly-like, even a super strong dude has trouble pushing a fat frick off of him.

Delusional. Weight classes exist for a reason. Just because you watch some dude who weighs 145lb beat down another guy who weighs something similar doesn’t mean he guaranteed to win against a guy who lifts weighs and is 50lbs heavier. Picking someone up and throwing them down is a move that any big strong guy can go for if they get their hands on a smaller guy, same with just grabbing and pinning them down. The only chance a weaker and smaller martial artist has is trying to strike in a hit and run manner, but that’s taxing and unless their striking power can K.O. in a few punches (which is unlikely) they’re gonna end up in a bad situation.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't being a good lifter transition very will into grappling specifically? I don't see how it wouldn't since you are essentially manipulating something in your environment same as a weight in the gym. I'm not so sure about striking, some people say that having strong muscles doesn't increase your striking power, don't understand how though especially if you have explosive legs and chest. I feel like most fighters are skinny because they need to make weight.

It's because fast twist muscle fibers are better for striking. Usually lanky guys have a genetic advantage to build fast twitch muscle fibers. The only problem is the will never get "big" like some people can.

These threads are always so lame. It's either big guys bragging that they could beat someone 100 pounds smaller, and guys who do boxing bragging that they could beat untrained fatties. Congrats to both. Everyone knows peak fighting performance is huge and trained. If you have to brag about being able to beat up someone at a great disparity in either of those, you're a b***h and you would get manhandled by anyone it's actually impressive to beat in a fight.
