I didn't say they worked by reducing cholesterol your statement is correct. But the high LDL does correlate with higher risk of vascular incident which is why we give them to patients with high LDL.
I concede that elevated LDL is correlated with vascular Inflammation, but I'm convinced it's a symptom, not the cause.

People with FH score higher in virtually every blood test for inflammation. Their chronically elevated LDL level puts their body under immense stress compared to the average person. You're skirting around the fact that with familiar hypercholestremia, the serum LDL is typically above 200mg/dL, and even as high as 400mg/dL. That's a completely different ball park to the 146mg/dL of OP.

Before you go on statins, get an ultrasound to actually check for atherosclerosis and get a more detailed lipid panel to check how much of your LDL is glycated. High LDL or high total cholesterol are not inherently bad, there are other factors that MAKE it bad.

Your doctor wanting to prescribe a statin for this is insane. This is likely due to poor diet and lack of exercise. Things to note:
In some people cholesterol can go up due to diet. You may be one of these people. Cut back on high saturated fat/high cholesterol stuff for 3 months and get a repeat test.
Alcohol raises serum cholesterol by harming the liver's ability to process/create cholesterol. If you drink, stop or severely limit your intake for 3 months and retake.
Other metabolic diseases (such as pre-diabetes) can raise cholesterol. I assume you didn't have high blood sugar so this can be ruled out.
If I had to guess you probably drink a little much and you're also overweight. Both of these will cause cholesterol to see modest rises. A statin is generally given for insanely high cholesterol and after trying diet and exercise. Your doctor may be trying to get you on a statin because a diet and exercise plan failed. If you're unable to keep to a plan it may be an option, but in my opinion you just need to work on that.
