Not all sugar is the fricking devil. If you're only getting it from fruit or minimally processed grains, then you're getting a healthy amount that your body and brain has evolved to run off of. The type and amount put into soda and candy is several more times than you'd be getting on a hunter-gatherer diet so your system goes haywire trying to balance the chemicals meant to process different types of carbohydrates and enough of this will inevitably frick your pancreas, kidneys, and nervous system. It can also encourage heavy imbalances in gut flora (it can promote fungal overgorwth) that prevent you from getting other types of nutrients.
A bowl of oatz with nut milk and berries would have about 10g of sugar give or take, but the mix of simple and complex carbs will keep your glycogen replenished and give you much longer lasting energy than a sugary energy drink ever could.
I finally accepted that sugar isn't good for you when I saw how much my cat loves honey, even a natural carnivore can be tricked by the sugar israelite
Depends how you use it, and if you're sedentary or active, sugar is cheap (relative to its caloric content) and lasts a long time when stored, easy to incorporate into different meals for cheap or easy calories.
