What style of meditation? The books you gays suggest are full of awakening/nirvana concepts that I don’t care for.

You're not trying to achieve anything, or improve anything. Be like a golem made of wood. Sit there not because you'll be better off for it, th eonly purpose is to sit there. Think of it as a break for your incredibly overstimulated brain

Literally just sit on your bed indian style, close your eyes and focus on nothing but your breathing for five minutes straight.

There's nothing complicated about it, simplest possible (to the point of not being useful) explanation is to just sit. But the emphasis there is on JUST. As in you are doing nothing else, you are not being annoyed by those noises you can't eliminate from outside, you are not thinking about something that bothered you, you clear your mind.

To start with you will want to focus on your breath and possibly count your breaths, either every breath (in, 1, out, 2) or every exhale (in, out, 1, in, out 2). This gives you a pretty basic thought to focus on and even this can be hard to maintain for a long time starting out.

Moving on from this you want to focus on the sensation of breathing (without counting) and/or the feelings in your body. Feel the cool air enter your nose and the warm air leave, feel the subtle warming and cooling sensations, your chest or stomach expanding and contracting, etc. You can also attune to your body by "scanning" bodyparts and focusing on the sensations in them. This can help you relax more as you may notice that you're tight somewhere, on noticing this you can address it.

Moving on from this the transcendental goal of meditation is to empty your mind completely (very difficult), even if this proves elusive for more than short stretches, paying attention to the thoughts that do emerge can be useful. It's not quite metacognition per se but you come to recognize the kind of thoughts that emerge in your head and become an "observer to yourself". In other situations you can use this skill to more directly apply direct control to your actions rather than letting thoughts and feelings direct you. You'll catch yourself when a vengeful or angry thought strikes you and cast it aside.

I'd suggest simply starting with this basic description of progression then doing further research once you feel like you've made progress. There is more to it, different techniques, etc but the brass tacks are quite enough initially.

I stopped believing meditation was anything other than a big meme after I found out the author of "The Mind Illuminated" got divorce raped after cheating on his wife

Western Buddhism is fricked and I don't think anyone should follow it. Meditation in general is an escapist cope

True, you can achieve a bit of a meditative mindset doing many tasks that don't require a lot of thinking.
However, I found it easier to start with regular seated meditation to find out what that mindspace feels like and how to get there.

meditation is pretty cool bros. Felt like I experienced this inner wholeness that I haven't felt since I was a kid. Usually don't get that from meditating but it's pretty crazy that meditation can do that

Hey frend, long time meditator here. You don't need a book. I'll tell you age old easy Buddhist method for children to start out.
Just focus on your breath, without any thought. You can start with saying in your mind:
    >breath in, breath out
with each breath, to focus your thoughts, however eventually you want to be focused on it without saying it in your mind.
That's it. Just focus on your breathing to start and the rest will follow.

        focus harder

        >What style of meditation?
Focus is the main thing on meditation.
any kind of emotional problem comes from a lack of focus
learn to focus on your breath, it's majoritavely mental, you can breath slowly and all but it wont be enough, you need to be conscious and in control of your breathing without focusing on anything else.
Everything you do has to be conscious.
Studying and reading are good supplements for meditation, they will keep your cortex active whenever you're not in meditation.
Knowing this, you can do anything you want. Me, for example, I breath in two breaths and breath out two more as a start, it's easier to get in the flow like that, and then my breathing normalizes by itself.

You have to focus on your breathing, you can't be focus'd on something and passing out. That's your loss of focus, that's what you work on.

I started meditating about 3 weeks ago, 20 minutes twice a day. I just close my eyes and focus on my breath. I feel really good afterwards
