Karate?

I want to start taking up Karate. Only martial art near me really. I'd be a white belt at 20 years old. Too old? I already got my high brown belt in TKD so, some experience.

i mean you could spend your time and money doing worse things. I think it's fun and sparing turns into a hoot.
if you really care about self defense carry a gun but if you are there just to learn karate you'll do alright.

Who gives a frick what belt you are. It's not about the belt, it's about learning and getting better. You choose how good you'll be.
Also I'm pretty sure I use to do karate in that very gym in picrel lmao

Look into who is training you. Karate is, y'know, it was one of those martial arts that ended up going mcdojo.
I only continued karate into 1st dan black belt, knowing it wasn't actually that useful as a martial art, because the instructor of my instructor was a former powerlifter who I liked immensely, taught a style with an established pedigree, and didn't oversell what was being taught.

if its the only dojo near him he might not be in a big city, and in my experience the bigger the city the more mcdojoy the instruction. Like that detriot tactical doofus.

        That's a good point.
OP, if the small city in question happens to be Grande Prairie, the instructor has a power rack and good plates in the dojo basement and you're welcome to use em.

why don't you just learn wrestling or kickboxing

The most learned martial art in the US is probably wrestling. Ironically, in my experience you almost never see an adult folkstyle/freestyle gym though lol.

Most people who learn it, do so in middle school and high school. Boxing would be the better bet I guess for this reason alone.

I think boxing overtakes wrestling for most learned, but it is just harder to beat someone who can tie you up and keep you pinned.

There are a ton of boxing gyms for sure especially in big cities, but just think about all the elementary, middle, highschool, and colleges with a wrestling program.

Best place to find wrestling as an adult is an MMA gym. They're usually packed with ammy wrestlers.

if you want to do karate, just do kickboxing or muay thai instead. Actual good karate has largely been superseded by these two. Occasionally you might find a legit gym.

why do people say this. there's plenty of gyms that offer wrestling classes several times a week. not as much as bjj but still

    What style of Karate?
The one I studied (SKA Shotokan) was a bunch of levels of white belt, a few of brown, then black. No colors. That is a western "innovation". SKA.org might be a bunch of lunatics, though.

Anyways, TKD sucks in a streetfight. High kicks that look good for scoring tournament points, but no power or connection at all behind them.

I think any kind of intensive cardio is good, especially doing something that can be a hobby you actually can enjoy. Like others warned, I’d research any place you go to to avoid a McDojo, but go for it.

Any style that isn't kyokushin, seidokaikan, ashihara, enshin or kudo is meme. Even the aforementioned are questionable. However, they all train hard contact at least (in theory)

No, I started at 20 and now I'm 20 years in. If you wait any longer, you'll wish you would've started last year, etc etc.

Also, a bunch of internet warriors are going to call karate garbage because that's what is the popular thing to do now. Just ignore the memes, these people only exist to tear you down.

Just looked it up and Holly never even did karate, google says it's boxing, kickboxing, MMA and BJJ. Continue to cope

so craazy that you're throwing this fit and you probably never actually hit anything other than a pad or a piece of wood (silly lol) with a roundhouse kick in your dance class. You need to go to any kickboxing gym and you'll quit after the first sparring session to a guy with 5 months experience
and Holly still never did karate

    >too old
Of course not! There are more than likely adult classes near you. The problem is finding a quality school. Karate is an amazing Martial Art that isnt given near as much credence as it used to have. Aim for the most ball-busting, traditional school you can find. Makiwaras and clay pots are a good sign. Even if you dont have anything like that near you Shotokan will still teach the basics. Just dont go around thinking youre a badass, because while Shotokan can be fun, most of its instructors are dorks who are incapable of teaching you real fighting techniques. Like I said, aim traditional and youll go far.

Your high brown in TKD is worthless. No one in a real martial art gets close to black belt at such a young age.

Utterly useless. Learn kickboxing or muay thai instead. Practical in real life and better gains.

I mean it's better than nothing, but it's not exactly a realistic fighting style unless you're at like a hardcore school in Okinawa

I know a guy who is into MMA and was a bouncer
He spent his early years on Karate and Aikido and he's pretty adamant they were wasted years
He's doing Judo and BJJ now btw

This. Karate is fricking useless. Its a way to get kids into contact sports if anything, but no more.

Aikido is only good for redirecting momentum anything else its shit. However, combining it with Judo or Jujitsu can be pretty effective. Karate is usually good but its MAJOR flaw is no hits to the head, lucky it can mix excellently with boxing. Andy Hug made good use of head kicks and hits

Aikido is for LARPing. If you want to redirect force boxing/muay thai/judo/wrestling all do it far better

So are judo and jiu jitsu except the way those do it actually works unlike aikido which gets shit all over even by 6 month white belts.
