But how is he wrong Mr "50 grams of liquid sugar is good for you and I must always argue for authority"

          Anonymous

It’s energy. Simple and complex carbs are the energy source for the body. Cutting out sugar simply means you’re forcing your body to process existing fat and protein intake in to sugars to function leading to longer term health problems. 50g is a lot in a single dose but take one for breakfast or after a workout and don’t eat for a few hours. You’ll be fine.

Do you guys even read the sticky or read about nutrition outside of IST?

keto shills are trying to kill people now by starving ICU patients from necessary nutrients

Given the enormous worldwide growing obesity rate, it's obvious that current medical advice of "just consoom sugar bro" isn't working.

0% of the world was obese in the days before processed sugar existed. Only a few small groups of people, such as people who worked on sugary fruit farms, were known to be obese. What a coincidence.

Holy frick guys there’s a variety of these. I’m an RN, gave an ensure to an emaciated old man that had like 30g of protein. There’s still a decent amount of sugar but it’s supposed to be an easily digestible source of energy for people not eating. It gets the job done and there’s typically way more important shit to worry about like their antibiotic regimen or blood products or whatever the frick they’re admitted for

Bruh, I knew an old man who almost died from a nutrient drink like this. Old delirious man gets carried to the emergency room, looks skinny but healthy. Gets given a different brand nutrient drink of just sugar and protein, which he drinks without difficulty. Within a few minutes he's unconscious, probably from hypoglycemia or lack of electrolytes. He'd been not eating for a week because of his dementia, which the person bringing him in forgot to mention. He got severe refeeding syndrome, but luckily recovered.

There's no error there. The drink was given to him and he nearly died. If he was given something with a lower glycemic/insulinemic index score he would have probably been fine, that was the implication. The fact that they offered this kind of drink to him was the problem and what almost killed him and this kind of drink isn't suitable (in my opinion) for patients like him, but it's sometimes given anyway.

But these drink are often the care, don't you see? They aren't appropriate care for malnourished patients since you can't know how they'll respond since the composition of the drink isn't suitable for all kinds of malnourished people. I was responding specifically to a post that had a story almost identical to mine, which is the only reason I was even responding, in my story it didn't go as well as the first guy's so it made sense to mention it. You just sort of jumped in claiming my story was fake for seemingly very stupid reasons.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. That was especially egregious since they 100% knew he had been fasting for weeks and they still gave him a concoction of not just sugar and onions oil but also maltodextrin which is even higher on the glycemic index than sugar. It's almost an assassination attempt.

feeding sick people sucrose and making their body fight off the poison is a poor way to treat them when they're sick. The only sugar a weak person should be consuming is glucose as a very small percentage of glucose is metabolized by the liver.

They are creating heart disease and diabetes by feeding them sucrose and fructose. De novo lipogensis happens the most with those compounds, about 10-15% of the glucose is ultimately turned into lipids vs like 90% of sucrose and fructose.

Just because they're a medical professional doesn't mean they know anything about health.

You goddamn fricking homosexuals can't read either? Jesus frick, IST has a literacy problem. Not getting enough sugar for your pea-brains.

I thought we've been through this already, moron.
                >During prolonged fasting, a more pronounced shift from glucose to ketone body metabolism is reported with acetoacetate and BHB supplying more than 50% of the brain’s energy [54], thereby replacing glucose as the main fuel supply. Availability seems crucial to cerebral uptake of ketone bodies during acute infusions in humans [55], whereas animal studies suggest that adaptation to increased levels of ketone bodies during fasting is accompanied by an increase in the brain’s capacity for ketone uptake, at least partly explaining the vast increase in ketone uptake after prolonged fasting [37,56]. Thus, both acute and chronic exposure to ketone bodies will increase the availability of alternative fuels for the brain.

Not really true, gluconeogenesis is insufficient to fulfill daily energy expenditure and can't convert all fatty and amino acids.
And I have yet to see any data to suggest gluconeogenesis has any inherent harmful effects an long term health.

Generally when doing systemic damage type of treatments, being in a fasted state is beneficial, as it protects normal cells and makes cancer cells more vulnerable.
You get less side effects while fasted. You get worse results if you gulp down sugary shit during it.
And generally, cancer cells cannot use ketones, so they rely entirely on glucose as the cells rely on a more ancient pathway that doesn't use oxigen for fuel generation.

He was running out of bodyfat, and becoming crazy underweight. Fasting wouldnt have helped him with shit since he was starving. Luckily he went to a prestigious university hospital and got treated and recovered and didnt listen to schizos online with quack theories, so I still get to see him.

              >He was running out of bodyfat, and becoming crazy underweight.
              >and had no appetite.

He wasn't gulping down ensures before his radiotherapy genius. He couldn't eat solid foods at all during the treatment because of the pain, the swelling, the loss of throat musculature etc.

And you're speaking in absolutes about thousands of different types of cancers. Some are highly glycolytic (aerobically, though, not anaerobically as you claim) but many cancer types are highly ketone-adapted.

              >However, the HuH-7 tumors in the KD group even had a trend to grow faster than that in the ND group

A ketogenic diet can have zero effect, or an anti-tumour effect, or a pro-tumour effect. It depends entirely on the specific cancer line in question. It's much more complicated than "cancer can't use ketones".
              Please stop giving medical advice.

              >He wasn't gulping down ensures before his radiotherapy genius. He couldn't eat solid foods at all during the treatment because of the pain, the swelling, the loss of throat musculature etc.
Okay, how long did he fast for before and after the radiotherapy?
              >A ketogenic diet can have zero effect, or an anti-tumour effect, or a pro-tumour effect
Did I say keto though? I said fasting.
And the study is about Ketogenic diet, I said again, fasting. Yes, eating fat and fasting both result in ketones being used as fuel source, but there is also things like amino acids being in them mix. For instance cancer cells can live off protein as well.

It's a bit late to try and backtrack what you said. FWIW my father-in-law was dangerously underweight from months of chemotherapy before he even started his radiotherapy. He had already been involuntarily fasting on and off for months by this point and was basically a skeleton.

It's a moot point because the reason he cited ketones was to (wrongly) claim that cancer cells can't utilise ketones for energy, when in fact, many can, and some cancers are actually adapted to ketones. This being the case, the source of ketones being dietary fat or body fat reserves doesn't matter - in many cases of cancer, it will at best have no effect or at worst, actually promote growth in the cancer.

Throat cancer isn’t rare and fortified sugary drinks are often prescribed to cancer patients to address weight loss.

Anons who are familiar with ensure drinks are more likely to have read and replied in this thread. Anons are more likely to be familiar with ensure type drinks if they or a relative have undergone therapy for GI disorders such as throat cancer.

              For emphasis
              >Consistently, KDs reduced the growth of the cell line belongs to the glycolytic subtype, but tended to promote the growth of the KB-metabolic subtype cell line. Therefore, the metabolic expression subtypes defined here have potential clinical implications in guiding personalized KDT, and further efforts will be required to validate the findings in other cancer types.

He was running out of bodyfat, and becoming crazy underweight. Fasting wouldnt have helped him with shit since he was starving. Luckily he went to a prestigious university hospital and got treated and recovered and didnt listen to schizos online with quack theories, so I still get to see him.

The point of Ensure is to help underweight or elderly patients gain weight. It's especially useful in the dementia care sector where patients often forget to eat
This is an actual medical drink that costs a fortune. I seriously hope nobody is drinking this willy nilly.

Ensure is prescribed to people who need to gain weight, obviously it has a lot of sugar. This man is so moronic.

No shit, these patients are literally wasting away. They should be consuming tonnes of sugar.

30 grams of added sugar a day is a lot for most people, much less per serving.

Just because ensure might be good for recovering surgery patients, doesn’t make it healthy in general.

Anyway, the point I’m making is that it’s a lot of sugar for most people, and most people shouldn’t be drinking ensure.
