>Label Project released a report about toxins in protein powders. Researchers screened 134 products for 130 types of toxins and found that many protein powders contained heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury), bisphenol-A (BPA, which is used to make plastic), pesticides, or other contaminants with links to cancer and other health conditions. Some toxins were present in significant quantities.

Protein powder is considerably cheaper than buying the same amount of protein in food.

          Anonymous

Actually it isn't. Your body doesn't require that much protein to build muscle, so what you're doing is instead of buying dirt cheap sources of calories, like carbs, you are consuming extra protein in order for your body to burn it for energy.

Secondly, the micronutrient quality of whole foods trumps whey protein handedly. This will make a large difference in terms of proper recovery and proper energy while working out, and will offer far more benefits beyond just muscle building.

You think you need 150 grams of protein when 100 is plenty provided that you make up the 200 calorie deficit with some carbs or fat, which is much cheaper. Even from a satiety standpoint, fibrous vegetables are far better for that than protein, and they are dirt cheap compared to protein.

How much protein does someone that regularly lifts weights need per day?

              Anonymous

.8g per pound of lean mass is probably a good start. Some people may need less, some more.

It's nowhere near 1g per pound of total bodyweight.

You not getting 8 hours of sleep a night or eating like shit or doing drugs / alcohol is going to be more likely the cause of your lack of muscle growth than you protein consumption, provided that you are at least having a serving of protein per meal.

                Anonymous

.8g per pound of lean mass and 1g per pound of total mass seem pretty close to one another to me.

I'm seeing my best gains ever at 1g per pound of total mass and I never drink or do drugs.

                Anonymous

                for a 150 lb person, it's 104g vs 150g

That is a 50% increase in protein. You're likely seeing better results because of things not related to protein consumption.

      >It’s a big enough brand name with enough competition that if something bad came out about their stuff it would be the end of their company. They have a vested interest in making sure that doesn’t happen by properly testing their product’s safety.
You're extremely naive if you think this is all it takes to keep companies honest. If this were the case, there would be no scandals of big companies ever, in any industry.
      >OOOH BUT ILLEGAL!
Yeah because big companies haven't covered up shit for years or even decades? On the one side you have companies that are huge like Enron who KNEW what they were doing was illegal and shit and it would destroy the company, did it anyway for years, then got crushed. On the other hand you have companies like VW who KNEW they were doing illegal shit and did it anyway for years, got caught, and still managed to survive the scandal (Dieselgate). The fact is being big and having your reputation on the line has little correlation with product trustworthiness.
      >B..but what about the health or food industry?
Literally every single large food megabrand has had massive scandals over the past 100 years, from fast food like BK's horsemeat incident to absolutely massive conglomerates like Monsanto causing farmers permanent neurological damage from using their herbicides (and let's not forget Monsanto manufactured Agent Orange and told everyone it was harmless to humans). Or how about Johnson & Johnson witholding the fact that they knew ASBESTOS was in their baby powder (and not in small quantities) since the early 70's, straight up lied about their testing results, and weren't caught until 2013. Spoiler: they're all still around.

Protein Powder is a big scam , they turned a waste product that was mostly used for Pig feed , in it self not being bad or anything , into a "muscle" food. Yes you need Protein , but you can just eat food , real food, for a normal person an extra cup of yoghurt a day is more than enough because your protein consumption is not the limiting factor of you building muscles (at least in the 1st world).

      Anonymous

      >an extra cup of yoghurt is enough
I think the most credible study results we have suggest 1.6g per kg of body weight give optimal results which means >144g of protein unless you're a manlet or skeleton. if you're consistently getting there with regular meals congrats but you'd be in the tiniest minority.
that being said I prefer quark over shakes but it's a similar concept of having a filler that's heavy in protein to compensate for meals that aren't chicken breast and broccoli.

Probably because most people already know this and "journalists" now have to come up with new stuff with clickbait headlines that will shock people and make them read their shitty articles. If youre
