Learning a Sport

I'm thinking of practicing some sport this year other than lifting. I'm 27yo, 5'9
-Fencing, elegant good reflexes, but kind of expensive
-martial arts, it would be nice to learn to defend myself
-Rugby, High intensity, but I'm a little shy to play team sports
What should I practice IST? also what sports do you play?

Sambo is pretty comfy, also chess, but unironically.

I've been doing boxing for about a year, its made me sweat harder than any lifting session I've ever done

Definitely learn some type of hand to hand fighting first.

Lots of tennis throughout the spring and summer for me.

Any is good so long as you're having fun moving. Plus the social aspect. Just pick one literally at random and try it.
I can sing the praises of fencing, but with niche sports your mileage is very dependent on the quality and proximity of the clubs near you.

Do not try team sports as an adult unless it's something like baseball where interacting with other players isn't as hands-on. There's a mental ability cultivated as a child doing team sports where you become spacially aware of all the people around you and how to move around them. This becomes virtually impossible to learn as an adult.

fricking lost cause man. Unless you like being around teenagers or old people.
I tried doing basketball and karate but unless you've been doing it since you were a kid, no dice. People tell you "it's fine, you can start at any age bla bla" but that's just bullshit.
There simply aren't that many guys in their mid-late 20s trying to learn a team sport. So either you'll be grouped with younger guys who are clearly much more advanced than you and you'll stick out like a sore thumb and will not build community or they stick you on the boomer team full of 55 year olds with knee problems.

I play golf and tennis now which are fine "adult" sports, but neither of them are really team-focus, except maybe tennis doubles (but I never play doubles so)

I practice boxing and do bouldering sometimes. If I have access to pools, I also love swimming.

Sometimes I wish I've picked up something else than boxing, because there's so many gyms that are just doing cardio with zero contact. Hitting the heavy bag is fun, but I'm thinking about either switching gyms or taking up bjj instead.

You can always try team sports with your friends.

Absolutely idiotic take. Where is it written that he has to compete at highest level ffs? Those sports can be easily done leisurely and still keep you healthy in mind and body.

Don't get discouraged by crab-mentality dickheads like that c**t, OP!

Started BJJ like 6 months ago, possibly the best decision in my life. I love grappling so much. If I wasn't 26, I'd try wrestling and judo as well.

Why does your age stop you from trying the two superior artforms?

I am already what I consider deeply invested and in my city I can't find good judo/wrestling gyms. Most wrestlers look for high school or even pre-school kids.

Judo might work but it'll possibly be down the line, at the moment I enjoy BJJ a lot and plan to stick to it as much as possible.

dont do fencing it is great for concentration but will frick up your body, all my friends who used to fence with me have imbalances, i have scoliosis, one of my friends was good (competitively) at it and had to stop because his back would hurt so much.
i almost exclusively do chess now
maybe cross country, swimming, rowing and ice skating for recreation
