Does anyone else find this guy hard to understand? Is he the epitomy of gymtard? Every time I watch a video of his (which is not often at all) I end up feeling lost. He has such a weird way of speaking, kind of like gordon ramsay.
From his novice program: "For the major compound exercises, you’re either doing sets of 3 or 5. You never do sets of 4, for reasons that are much too complicated for this section. It’s one or the other, no questions asked."
Wtf? No questions asked? Why? Why are 4 sets bad?
The guy is strong as frick but he makes it seem like there's some hidden complexity to improving your numbers.

Like what? When does benching to improve bench and adding more weight stop working?

        Anonymous

to get better bench, you need to bench more. more weight or more reps or more sets or maybe more rom. if you only do this with flat bb bench you will eventually be limited by wear and tear. so you need to switch things up. which means new exercises, that depending on form and rep range can have better or worse carry over. this also depends on your sticking point and on what muscles need to develope. i.e. if your issue is to lift the bar of your chest at all, jm press isn't the right lift to add in.

+lmao5lbs or just straight up yolo'ing isn't sustainable in the long run, otherwise every casual gym goer would have 3-4pl8 benches

          Anonymous

fair enough but give some examples of how you bench 3-4pl8 then? Why does nobody ever actually straight up say what you need to do? Why is it always hidden by some veil of mystery? Just say what you would do to hit 3pl8.

            Anonymous

Because it's complex as frick. If you've been lifting for some time and surpassed 2pl8, you know what you need to do to get to 2.5 pl8 is not what got you to 2pl8 in the first place. And even after you get to 2.5 pl8, you can't repeat the same process to get to 3pl8. Because of natural and severe diminishing returns, after a certain point every single gram of weight, and every single rep comes at an increasingly compounding cost.
But you knew this if you actually lifted you fricking dyel

did to get to 2pl8 is not

I squat more than you and it's just not true, your work capacity sucks. You can and should be doing 4x10 weighted back extensions following your grueling squat workout, and you SHOULD be doing leg extensions and core following that.
Leg day is something you do 2x a week with an additional recovery squat session in the middle.

Gentlemen, gentlemen, please, let's be reasonable here. Of course bench stimulates the arms, specifically triceps, and bench variations such as close grips can be great compounds for hitting tris. On the other hand, the primary mover for standard bench is the pecs, and is what will grow the most from performing it. It hope that clears things up.

I'm an ape, long ass arms, lanky build with thick core, it makes no fricking sense to me to focus on any pushing. Historically all my important injuries that I still have today happened in some shape or form due to pushing. I can still rep 2pl8 bench (at least I could last time I checked) but I realized I really don't need to do any significant pushing to have a very good and athletic physique. My main lifts are bb rows (I also do other forms of rows), pullups and deadlifts. For legs and core I do zercher squats and lunges, I also bike occasionally and sprint. I still do curls of any kinds, and sometimes I throw in some skullcrushers if I done push-ups that day.
