Lifting or boxing?

If I only have time for one, which should I go with? Never done any martial arts before.
I don't plan on getting into any fights or anything, but knowing how to fight just in case seems like a good idea. On the other hand, I also want nicer aesthetics, and most boxers look pretty DYEL.

Boxing is not useful for street fights, martial arts in general are not gonna help you if you get stabbed by broken bottle or shot if you happen to be in USA.

Muay Thai is one that is best for fighting on the streets. Martial arts will not give you nice aesthethics, they will teach you how to fight, fighting is mostly about speed less about muscle/strength. Though for me always being athlete>static picking up of iron plates

That said, you wont find any serious boxer that doesnt also go to gym. Be prepared for hours of cardio as well, Boxing is incredibly taxing, you gonna be gassed in 30 seconds

Of course it is, it just isn't useful in every single situation, like being taken to ground for example.

Boxing teaches you to not care about kicks or hits below stomach, grappling or getting ambushed

          Anonymous

It doesn’t teach you how to negate those things, but only a fricking moron would ever try to use a pure boxing style in a street fight. It will, however, tech you foot work, angles and proper striking, all of which are universal skills needed in any fight

      >Boxing is not useful for street fights
how old are you? you sound like a little kid. Boxing is incredibly important and should be every man's base fighting skill. It teaches you footwork, movement, timing, distance control, and not to panic if you take a punch. it's simple, uncomplicated, and takes just a few months to become decent. after that, you just drill and spar once a week and move on to a grappling art like judo. muay thai is infamous for having shitty hands.

OP, do boxing for a year. you can also incorporate lifting into it. don't get caught up in a 'this or that' approach.

Boxing OK for street fights. Muay thai is better and Muay thai + practical self defense is better(reading the situation, knowing when to run, et)
Muay Thai is best. I'd also include sambo.
Muay thai gives great aesthetics. Only mcdojo martial arts don't make you look sexi.

He's somewhat right tho. Not for hobbyists. Normal gays can lift too but real fighters don't lift. Calisthenics or lighter weights are what fighters do. The fighters with the heaviest lifts are the least competent.
Your CNS only has so much energy, big muscles need a lot of blood, and the time spent lifting heavy could be technique for fighting.
Bjj is great for fitness and fighting in a cage or 1v1 in a secluded area but the last thing you want in a real fight is going to the ground or being that close if they have a weapon.
Muay Thai + wrestling and/or sambo are the best for irl self defense.

Boxing. You'll see less volume, but it's the most fun way to get both your cardio and a heavy muscle workout at the same time. If you like to spend your time efficiently and actually learn a valuable skill, then go for boxing.

One will allow you to kick peoples asses, the other will get you looking nice and aesthetic. Which do you value more? Unless you’re a moron I’d wager you’re not going to go around getting into street fights, however if some shithead comes up to you and your girl one day what are you going to do? Boxing makes you warrior, lifting satisfies the more vain part of you and gets you equally vain chicks (but at least you’re getting pussy). The gym guys will get more girls than you because girls aren’t going around asking who’s the toughest guy in the room, they’re looking for the hottest. But, you can take solace in the fact that you can beat their fricking ass. On the flip side of that however, that’s all you’ll get. A silent pride that you can beat them up, because starting actual fights will get you shot, stabbed, arrested, or sued real quick.

If you spend a couple years bulking and lifting, you'll be able to beat up most people you run into and defend yourself, and you'll be huge and strong. If you spend a couple years boxing, you'll be able to beat up most people you run into and defend yourself, but you'll be small and weak. Lifting, no brainer. Real fights dont last 10 rounds, or even 1, anyway. Throw in cardio and hit the bag a few times with your lifting and you'll be able to whoop even more ass. Should you to take up boxing later, you'll already be able to hit hard.

I do Muay Thai for 10 years and work out for 9. I would bet my life savings on 85kg fighter from my dojo knocking out biggest guy at the gym any day of the week, firstly the cardio levels are incomparable, second if you dont know how to defend from kicks your knees will get fricked permanently in 45 seconds. You think you can fight because you lift heavy but reality is you would get your shit kicked in by any decent fighter, you are slow and dont know how to fight

Jesus christ who gives a frick. Yeah im sure a trained fighter would kick a big guys ass nobody is talking about that. This thread is about bang for your buck starting something new. Someone who lifts is going to be strong, intimidating and can defend themselves. A novice boxer can only defend themselves at best. Go kick some shit you asian dork.

How does lifting teach you to defend yourself? You're strong but if you have no guard and move like a tranquilized sloth then it would be hard to defend against someone throwing punches? Maybe wrestle? But you dont know how to wrestle

If youre between 1/2/3/4 and 2/3/4/5 somwhere you should absolutely be able to beat up the majority of average folks. The average guy benches like 135 and has never thrown a punch. If you are actually strong and over 200lbs theres no reason you should be scared in public. You can stop someone at the very least from hurting you.

People dont need a readon to attack someone, wrong place wrong time, you look like someone, you accidently bump shoulders, But you seem to have it all worked out but most random acts of violence are just that, Random. Its worth knowing how to guard and counter, slip, some nice combos and a bit of footwork.

    I did boxing and mma.

    Main advantage
of training full contact martial arts is that you will not freeze or freak out in a street fight. No matter how strong you are when faced with novel, high stakes situation your mind will go blank and you won't make good decisions. Sparring will make the sitch familiar, muscle memory will handle the distance and defence, while you can still think about minimizing risks or efficient ass kicking.

    Main disadvantage
is that you will get punched in the head repeatedly. This will permanently kill your non regenerating brain tissue. This fact is impossible to explain to boxing crowd who are in early twenties. If you go boxing, being firm in choosing sparring partners who will protect your health is the number one responsibility. Also, don't ever spar without mouth guard, even light tap will make your teeth clash against each other chipping them. Don't spar with heavier people, they will hurt you on accident.

    As for self learning.
    1. The feeling of distance, angles and balance are the most important things. Those can only be learned with a partner.

    2. Punching takes a while to learn, especially straight punches. Many train for a year and still shove a bag instead of throwing punches.
