All alcoholics are high functioning until they're not.

        This
and when they stop functioning, they do it dramatically, my father was one of those until a cardiac arrest almost killed him and left him with a dilated heart and a treatment of seven pills a day.

You can't stay high-functioning forever. What starts as "I had a stressful day, I'll just have a second drink tonight right after dinner" turns into two or three drinks each night. What starts as "It's 5pm, time for a drink" becomes "It's 4pm and I'm not doing anything, it's basically 5". You need a bigger hit to get the same sense of relief. If it was just about the act of drinking something, you would drink juice or tea.

What makes it last a long time is that it stops being about pleasure or socializing and becomes about relief. You can go years stressing yourself out all day, then drinking yourself into relaxing each night. But this only enables you to continue living with the stress as it grows. You won't manage it or reduce it, since you can just drink it away after work. Eventually it's bigger than you are, and you stop being high-functioning. That's really true for any form of relief that doesn't address the source of stress - drugs, alcohol, masturbation, video games, whatever.

You want to keep drinking, cut back and fix some of your problems first. And if some of them are unavoidable due to the nature of your job or family or whatever, at least do what you can.

      > t. work with a bunch of lawyers and almost all of them are or were high-functioning alcoholics

Those can still frick you up mentally if you use them a lot. Especially ecstasy if you use it more than once a month and dont give your brain enough time to refill your serotonin levels

      Whoever makes these charts lol
How is heroin or meth less worse than alcohol? Have these people ever seen a heroin addict in their life?

Here you go alcoholics. Now defend your poison

Alcohol is way more common than heroin, so total negative impact on society is greater. +100 damage for each heroin user, +1 damage for each alcoholic, but 1000x more alcoholics than heroin users means 10x more damage from alcohol.

this. Fricking 0.1% of the population understands how to look at a study critically its so fricking infuriating. Thats how we end up with "omg guys red meat causes cancer!"

Nice bars. What does this mean? Are those totals for the whole population, or is that a per-user average? How is the "damage" measured? What the hell does "community, economic, and environmental cost" even mean?

This isn't at all how it is you tard. No one says the guy who has a beer with friends on the weekends and Fridays is an alkie. The guy blacking out alone in his apartment on a Wednesday is an alcoholic.

My uncle was a high functioning alcoholic

had scotch or whisky or something in his coffee every morning, a couple of beers for lunch, and end the day drunk.

every day he did this and continued to lead a normal life

leaky heart valve and doctors didnt catch it and that gave him multiple strokes from them trying to fix his blood pressure from a doctors visit

he smoked cigarettes like a chimney too

I mean he was overweight but other than that he was perfectly healthy until the doctors gave him pills. doctors said alcohol and cigs had nothing to do with it
