Men have an interent psychological need to earn and provide. Companies exploit this shit into making them think a man has to work constantly or he's not a good "provider". The reality is that early tribal humans never worked more than a few hours per day unless hunting, which is only done 1-2 times a week. The fact we release hormones that destroy our organs and joints if we work too much is a huge biological sign we were never meant for very long hours.

The average person has no idea how to properly lift something from the ground. Combine this with a lack of flexbility due to chairs and it's inevitable that you'll frick your shit up.

Those rig workers make a small fortune for what they do. But they’re all only there because it’s their only shot at that kind of money without either being self employed or smart enough to make it elsewhere. And it also shows when a down cycle happens because they spend what little time they do have getting loans on ridiculously overpriced shit. Pro tip: if you want to get some kino stuff on the cheap, wait for a down turn in the oilfield. Most of these guys will be so desperate to offload it you can basically just take over payments on what’s owed: whether it’s a truck, boat, camper

Working a blue collar job makes you stronger than lifting weights. Weightlifting may make you more cut and defined, but you won’t have the raw strength and power of a logger or a construction worker with a beer belly.

Give me some pretty boy who lifts weights vs a Blue Collar worker who works 48+ Hours a week in a physically demanding job and i’ll put my money on the working man every time.

I guarantee i may have a bigger belly, or i may be shorter (5'6"ft even) but i’d run house on anyone of you little queers who think you’re tough because you can lift weight on some little machine equipment.

I guarantee i could whoop any of your asses. I am private contractor who does Remodeling, brick masonry, land clearing, trash removal and i’ve worked since i was 15 years old.

As someone who used to do 70-80 hour weeks in busy season, you don't have time to make shitty tik toks if you are that busy. You are sleeping, getting groceries, or trying to enjoy some normality. Yes you do have 5 minutes to spare for bullshit, and we did that too, but not like this.

My worst week was 141 hours in 10 calendar days. I immediately went home and napped for hours and didn't do shit the next day. I didn't "brag" on social media. Pic related

Worst I have done is 80 hours a week, limited by regulations limiting work on saturday and no work and sunday.
Its not bad, if you can eat at a somewhat proper time at workplace, so you can digest the food before going to bed 4-5 hours later.

That assumes you are fiscally responsible which generally these guys are not. Why save money for a home when you're always away? Why invest when you have a shitload of income and little expenses since the company covers housing and food on the rig? Why not blow it on fun toys to enjoy your little free time?

Also if you are responsible with your money and retire early, that's great. But starting a family in your mid 30s is going to be a lot harder. That may or may not be worth it.

He gets paid a ridiculous amount of money to work his “hundred” hours a week (breaks every two hours) but works only two weeks at a time, then two off. Yeah, it’s hard work. But his ass isn’t working 100 hours a week every week. That “lower your tone” shit is a great way to get slapped, which is why he did it over what I’m guessing is tiktok or instagram or some fricking thing like a giant pussy.

Pic related

Yep. I used to make ~20-25k doing CAD work freelance and was barely scraping by. During the pandemic I put my head down and taught myself to code in c#, java, and javascript. Now I make 10x what I used to and I dont work nearly as hard. Life is what you make of it

I work for a company now, i did CAD work freelance. Completely self taught. Everything you need to learn is freely available on YouTube. That goes for more than just coding. You just have to have the discipline to actually push yourself to learn.

That's generally what I've heard. Dev work is more about being able to demonstrate the skills. Was landing that job difficult for you? I imagine you built a good portfolio.

Asking cause you're kind of are living my goal rn.

Landing the job 100% came down to my portfolio of work I was able to show. It is all about being able to show not tell. I do a lot of 3D oriented programming, and rendering my results in blender is a hobby, so I was able to build up an Instagram page along with my website and github. If it is your dream, go and achieve it, dont let you stop yourself.

I still think that a degree destroys self-taught learning simply because while you may not have fully understood the content, you could worm your way through graduation and it shows your employer that you can stick to something for 3 years. Even stupid 3-year meme degrees hold value.

I have a degree, related to the CAD work I was doing. And this job I have now is programming, but the CAD and product design experience I have from my degree is immensely useful for the things I work on. I do agree that having a degree looks good to an employer for the reason you mentioned. But I would also hire someone with no degree if they could show me they can do the work to the level I want.

I mean sure but is that really worth 3-4 years of your life when you could just learn the skill itself and just have to work a bit harder to get the same job? It's way more convenient too.

                Anonymous

Well, if you're gunning for a specific job, probably not. But if you simply have a 3-year degree in your arsenal, the range of available jobs goes way up even if it is in random shit.

How do you balance learning multiple languages at the same time?
I can’t really choose because I like all of them, but feel like my progress is slow because I keep switching between mobile app to webshit

                Anonymous

Well thats your problem you're focused on the gayest shit you can do with programming. Mobile and web dev is lame. I became interested in generative art, which led me to Processing (which led me to java), which led me to p5js (which led me to JavaScript) and my background in CAD led me to learning C# because it is the most popular language for coding plugins for my CAD program of choice, Rhino.

                Which videos did you use?
I have been watching a couple of them but they dont really seem to teach how to code, just how to copy other peoples code.

It'll be very specific to the areas I'm interested in, but I'll tell you. I used a lot of The Coding Train on YouTube, yes Daniel Shiffman is a goofy homosexual but he actually is a good teacher, especially for absolute beginners. And I watched the GSD6338 series by Jose Garcia Del Castillo at Harvard GSD on YouTube (though thats super specific and more general than just coding, it also teaches you vector math and stuff, useful in my work), and I used some very specific videos by Long Nguyen on C# plugin development for Rhino/Grasshopper. At that point I also watched some random tutorials on C++ for OpenFrameworks but I did not like C++ so didn't keep up with it, and instead began using p5js more. See I found generative art and wanted to learn these things so I could create cool art. You have to find a driving force to learn shit I think.

I was night shift and they basically didn’t let us go home until everything for the day was done and of course morning shift were lazy fricks left basically everything for us. Mon - Sat then on call for Sunday for three years. Made 80k - 90k a year but closest I’ve been to suicide.

90% of "jobs" are essentially slave labour extrapolated to economic instead of racial castes. 5% are daycare jobs for women and the upper-middle class, and the remaining 5% is for the few people who have agency in the world. This is why I am an overeducated gymcel NEET

Physical labour is only fun when you're under 30 and your body has very resistant to stress injuries. It's just not sustainable.

You can make a ton of money from rig work/blue collar shit in general but it’s really not worth the crazy hours. Easier to just get a college degree and aim for a management position, you’ll make more than them with a quarter of the work. Most of these guys blow their money on alcohol and boats/trucks/ATVs/etc. anyway.

    Based tone lowerer.

I work as a STEM researcher and since my post doc days I put in a lot less hours, maybe 40-50 but sometimes more depending on the week and due dates. I make $120k right now which is okay but considering my education and CV (papers, grants etc) I would be better off going private.

But I have young kids and while I love my field I’m just not willing to sacrifice any more of my time for more productivity and prestige. Just not worth it unless I was going to get paid at least $250k.

Bragging about work 100+ hours a week is just moronic. I’d rather be with my kids and enjoying the outdoors. I get a lot of personal pleasure and satisfaction out of my work but it’s still a means for supporting my family and lifestyle not the end all be all,

Based. I worked from home for a while when COVID started and I really didn’t like it mostly because I need to be in my lab to get things done.

I work with people who can do their whole workflow on a computer and they are loving wfh. If I was in their position I would too although commute aside I do like to go to work and use our great gym that is virtually empty since 2020.
