idk I must have good deadlifting genetics or something because I've never found the whole most fatiguing lift thing to be true personally
squats, cleans, carries and push presses are all way more fatiguing for me

Squats are more brutal. Things like a deficit barbell row for high reps (so the bar is floating the entire set) can be more brutal too. High rep RDL's are similarly much more brutal than low rep conventional deadlifts off the floor.

True but if you want to have healthy knees training legs through things like Squats and Deadlifts are vital. I skipped leg days all the time until I got a knee injury doing Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. After recovery I started training my legs, working my way up to Squats and Deadlifts. Pain free knee mobility is back and I am shocked at how much better my knees feel now. Looks aside, Squats and Deadlifts are a must for long term athletic health.

Just don't be a dipshit and lift properly with good form. Ego lifting is dumb regardless, but for Squatting and Deadlifting it can frick you up.

none of these things effectively develop the tendons and ligaments of the knee, nor do they develop the muscles around the knee (notably VMO) which help protect it as well.

Why would I do that when I could go do 4 sets of ATG squats? Takes less time and is infinitely more effective

1 inch above or below, makes no difference, it still shreds my knees. ATG is better, at least for me. Fricks up my quads significantly more as well

Did all that, particularly cycling post injury. Prior to injury I ran and did a lot of hill sprints as well. None of it got rid of knee pain as quickly, noticeably or dramatically as squating did specifically.

This is correct my VMO was the muscle I was targetting specifically from all the literature I was reading for my particular knee injury. Started by cycling to get mobility back. Then went to machines and barbell squats. Then squats and now deadlifts.

Stairs are something I don't brace myself to feel some pain for anymore, along with a bunch of other things.

is this why it feels like my glutes and hammies are exploding as a newblet doing a slow bulk? i do DL 1x a week 3x5 and RDLs 1x a week 3x10 and have been trying to activate my glutes and core during them way more and my weight shot up, doms in glute and hammies? ive been thinking im just getting fatter but there must be sth to it when those muscles apparently havent really been hit hard before

Why would I ever do these conventional over trap bar?

because trap bar lifts aren't deadlifts. they're squats with a different grip

Probably a weaker trunk and stronger upper body. The problem with squats is they require a whole lot of the rest of your body, and the range of motion is easier on TBDL. Up then gravity helps you down, where with squats you're stabilizing on the way down.

      Anonymous

Trap bars are harder to stabilize with heavy loadings. Traditional deadlifts make it impossible for bar path to ever be erratic. Trap bars need to be stabilized by small rotator cuff muscles at the top. Most people don't do farmer's walks at the same intensity as they will try a deadlift, so there's a significant chance that they have the strength to keep the bar path vertical. Open trap bars are in style, so if you have one the risk is minimized.

Conv hits the posterior chain more, but if you're doing RDLs on top of trap bar deads you're probably fine

are ATG squats better than parallel?
    what's the difference?

      Anonymous

I'm sure hypertrophy differences are negligible assuming you do as much intensity, but mobility gains are so underrated because people don't think long term

      Anonymous

better mobility, develops the knee tendons better, and is probably better for hypertrophy (more stretch on the prime movers + less fatiguing due to lower absolute loads)

If you can do them without trouble, do them. Olympic lifting shoes is basically a cheat code.
If you're a lanky skeleton with long womanly legs and a short torso, settle with low bar human forklift style to parallel squats.

        Anonymous

I've seen dudes with really long legs squat ATG without issues, you just need more heel elevation than people with shorter legs (tho some people can't be bothered with that, in that case just go to parallel)
        Also
        >If you're a lanky skeleton with long womanly legs and a short torso
Don't men usually have longer legs?

          >Don't men usually have longer legs?
The proportion of torso to legs tends to be greater for men.
I have 6'0.5" reach, a 6'0" torso but legs that make me 5'10" kek. At least the tibia and femur's are well proportioned in relation to each other.
Still use Olympic shoes when lifting with 3/4" elevation, I think that's the standard and highest. I can sit in a slav squat for days without them too tho.

            >The proportion of torso to legs tends to be greater for men.
From everything I've read it's the opposite, men tend to have proportionally longer legs while women have proportionally longer torsos. If I had to guess it's probably just because men are usually taller, and tall people tend to (not all the time, just on average) have more of their height coming from their legs compared to their torso when compared to shorter people

              Anonymous

And this also ties in the squatting thing, it's usually tallgays who struggle to squat ATG because they have proportionally longer legs. Manlets usually squat ATG just fine even without heel elevation because they typically have proportionally shorter legs which makes it easier.

                >From everything I've read it's the opposite
Might be true, I just assumed it was this way because most of the men on my father's side have the same proportions as me, meanwhile e.g my sister has longer legs compared to torso.

I'm 165cm and I can squat ATG without weightlifting shoes, though I still use them for more quad bias.
                >Might be true, I just assumed it was this way because most of the men on my father's side have the same proportions as me, meanwhile e.g my sister has longer legs compared to torso.
                Makes sense
