No. It's obvious he's just trying to gain attention by being controversial, it's a common ploy and people fall for it every time.

If squats were bad or "inefficient" it would have been noticed in past few decades. Even if they are slightly "inefficient" in some ways, it's all about what you like doing and will continue to do.

its always gonna depend on your sport. if its just physique or something you can get away with a lot, but if he pitched this to a basketball strength coach he would probably get laughed out of the room
nevertheless exercise variation is underrated probably as a product of the heavy powerlifting emphasis in some parts of the strength coaching market

im not saying you *need* to do them. im saying that they are not overrated. and the squat as a movement is necessary, but if you dont do squats proper then you have to do some other variation that puts you in similar body positions. basic kineseiology. ther arent strictly necessary yes. but in terms of how good of an excercise they are, unless you have some sort of other reason not to do them they are the fricking king of leg excercises.

I think there just some different on where the rating that is "over" is coming from. if you just do Louie Simmons squat variations all day and try to pitch that to a track team (which I'm sure some very vocal very minor segment does on here) that is probably overrating squats. but that doesn't even have to do with squats at a certain point right but the one size fits all approach fanatics from all corners will have. that's what I think the anon you replied to was getting at

I switched to bulgarians a long time ago for two reasons. One, they simply hit my legs harder. Like so hard I think I'm going to vomit, and they don't involve my back at all. Two, I've seen too many people BTFO out their backs doing squats and diddlies both IRL and online. The stories are legion. I refuse to end one of those people, I intend to lift forever so with 50+ years in mind the choice was easy, BSS>squats.

He's talking sense, it's just the pseudo powerlifting SS crowd refuse to accept that squats are overrated and unnecessary of you aren't a powerlifter

Why do you think you can't grow legs without squats, genuine question?

You don't need deadlifts for a big back
You don't need bench for a big chest
        Etc

No single exercise is necessary when it comes to bodybuilding

You obviously can, but squats are a fantastic exercise and you'd be daft not to include them to some degree

What is a better way to work your legs than squatting? You're literally flexing your quads

Yeah man, squats don't build legs, deadlifts do. The lift that uses legs for the first 1/3 of the movement only is the true builder of leg mass.

No, the squats have persisted as a mainstay exercise for over a century. If it was truly an inferior exercise it wouldnt be a mainstay and instead be cyclic.

Case and point, floor press and vertical leg press. They come in and out od vogue, the first one because its limited ROM yields it drastically inferior to other pressing exercises. The second because it is actually bad for your back.
