Military

I’m looking into joining the military, to be exact at the navy. I know the fitness requirements vary by age but I’m going to shoot for the requirements of men younger than me and I wanted to know what are the best ways for me to train push-ups sit ups? I can only do 30 push-ups in a minute right now and I have no clue about it’s ups but it’s probably bad.
For running I’m starting with C25K and once I can the full 1.5 mile requirement with no walking I’ll start working on getting it to sub 12 minutes.

Best ways for me to train? Pretty much giving up weights for this right now. Only doing 2 days of lifting now.

I'd think alternating between jogging/running several miles on one day, then focus mostly on pushups and situps the next would work, it'd just take time to build endurance and speed. What's your routine now?

      Anonymous

I just started today so no real routine but switching from SS (don’t bully me) to
      push-ups X F until I’ve hit a total # of reps for the day
      >push-ups & sit ups
Sit ups I’ll probably just do 3x F to start since I’ve literally never done anything to directly train core
      >lifting
Two days per week for lifting I was gonna
      Lat pulldown 4x10
      Neck
      Delt work
      Shrugs 3x15
      Curls 3x10
      >cardio
Every day that I don’t lift will be some form of cardio. I have a row machine and plan to alternate or mix up the running and rowing somehow. Need to do 2km in 8 minutes which I can do now if I don’t focus on strict form. So if C25k is 2-4 days per week I should have a few days of rowing as well. May have to just do 20 minutes rowing post lift days. For swimming I was on a team in childhood and will just take 1 day to replicate the drills I used to do.

I’m fat as frick right now. Been cutting but doing zero cardio aside from occasional rowing.

        >For free
Go to the Air Force website and look into their special warfare page for any of their PJs, CCT, or TACP, at the bottom they have a pretty decent free to download 3 week workout program.
Darbee also has free program workouts you can download that give you a good way to get in shape. I would suggest doing their Runner's Prime over C25K just because all C25K people tell you to work out in between days and that's what RP does for you, giving you core, chest, and leg days based entirely on bodyweight.
        >Paid
HTK, Hard to Kill fitness and Mountain tactical have very good programs tailored to multiple military, fire, ems, and police jobs. I use HTK's bodyweight which has you doing 55 push ups week one and slowly progresses you to the 100s while giving you space for any cardio program in between days.
You can pay for both or look around and find them on the internet usually. HTK has Tactical Bodyweight and Tactical Monster, which is for weights.
        >Alternative
/k has a /MEG thread up all the time. It's Military enlistment general and has a good push up/running program and a lot of advice.
/plg/ has a very good pastebin with a lot of info on nutrition and weightlifting.
        >My advice if you're only doing two days of lifting
Do Juarez valley push ups 1-10 both push up days and go up a number every week. So 1, 2, 3, 4....up to 10 then up to 11, 12, 13...etc each week.
Run very lite for 30 minutes then gradually add speed and distance. Rally starting from scratch you will face shin splints every run if you don't start at a 15min mile pace. The number one thing people overestimate is their legs ability to go 0-100 on a run. You usually don't realize a 10 minute mile jog pace is already 150% on the legs of someone just starting out. C25K is good, but the lack of workouts on the in-between days can frick you over. Most people don't realize how badly you need core to run distance, which is why I always suggest Runner's Prime over it.

I’m going to look into everything you posted right now but I wanted say
          >Run very lite for 30 minutes
I can maybe get 0.5 miles/7 minutes before I begin to puke right now.

Honestly I might have to take a goggins tier approach and crash diet for a brief period to get to a lighter weight to be able to run without feeling fried/sick for the next few days or puking before I’ve been hit 10 minutes. 6’1” 270lbs.

            Don't goggins anything. Ever.
Don't worry if you can't run. Run/jog for 30 minutes. Even if you get down to a shitty little trot, keep your heart rate up but only breathe through your nose. This will naturally throttle you and give you an idea of when you're going too hard. If you open your mouth to breathe, start trotting/walking. Don't worry, you will get it eventually.
Air Force should also have a free nutrition guide somewhere on their site. If not under the special Warfare page then check under the basic training page because they have another free program their.

No I didn’t not say I could run 2k in 8 minutes. I said I can ROW that if I let my form fall to shit. Which doesn’t really count if form is shit.

Max effort once or twice a week. Do it exactly like you would on the test.
Light/volume for the rest of the week.
              >running
              Run more. Mostly easy runs.

Would you guys say it would be wise for me to just focus on losing the weight for now? I have a reasoning. I’m fat and when I was 18 I managed to lose over 100lbs by walking and later sprinting and running but since I started sprints and running at this same weight I tore my menus in each knee. Had surgery both times, one tore again. Managed to fully recover but it took years. I’m hesitant because I would be ass fricked if I had another tear during or before basic. Running right now makes me feel sick for days even just trying to do an “easy/light” run. There was a time I could 3-5 miles but I never had that until I was skelly at 19. Just to the tears to become so bad the joint could barely move. Took a lot of incline walking and PT exercises to get blood flow and have them feel 100% again zero pain now.
I’m 27 now and if this post wasn’t telling I fell off my wagon. I want to be able to run like that again, but I know deep down it’s not gonna get any easier without risk until I’m closer to a healthy weight. Shit I could probably even start at 225lbs without the risk or feeling so ill from such a pathetic little run of 0.5 miles max

If you follow a program, you will lose weight. And you better take it super easy on the runs since you're overweight and have knee injuries. Should also look into knees over toes guy too. I had double knee surgery and have been running from 240-225lbs at 6'3".
Start today, it will help you lose weight faster. Don't worry about time, you rush it you're screwed. Air force and army is up to 39, Coast guard is 32 I believe. I don't know about Navy but right now the only thing you might miss is Marines which is 28 I believe.

If you're joining to just put "military" on a resume and have some stories or whatever join the Marines. If you really don't like women don't worry (unless you're the POGest of POGs), my entire enlistment the only chicks I worked with only opened their mouth to put a lip in or eat box.

Don't pay for any programs, that's the stupidest thing. Go to the navyseals subreddit and look at all the programs they have for each branch. Pick one and follow it.
    >inb4 NOOOOOO you have to go back!1
If you're going into the navy only do spec war programs, if you want technical skills join the Air Force so you can have a 1:1 transferable job. The navy has good jobs as well but being stuck on a ship sucks major ass while chair force gays go on flights all over europe to do their job. If you want to be on a boat without having to do gay long deployments, for the most part, then join the coast guard. You don't need to be some PT stud to pass any basic unless you're going for special warfare programs.

I’ll look into them and I’m not an old gay but I’m late 20s. As far as what I want from the military it’s the classic lost in life just left a field I no longer want to be anywhere near. Feel stuck. Everyone keeps recommending military. The more I look into it the more it seems like a good idea. Maybe it’s a bad idea for me maybe it will be a game changer. Idk. All I know is I’m a weak individual. If joining means they break me down to rebuild me and I come out actually competent and disinclined with a career or actual options to finding a career outside the military then that’s great. I don’t feel like I got much to lose. Shit I have nothing to lose. Either way my primary goal doesn’t change much, I need to get my health back first.

I’m in the process of getting sober, quit alcohol, quit weed, trying to quit nicotine and caffeine. I have a road ahead of me. I’m probably looking at 6 months minimum before I’m ready.

Judging from these comments, what I’m about to say will be an unpopular opinion but these are all fantastic reasons to join. People in your shoes end up wasting their time partying, chasing women, doing drugs, and focusing on all the wrong things. At least joining the military will give you some priorities.

I got out a little over 2 years ago. Overall, there are a lot of things that sucked and made me want to get out. But I’m glad I forced myself to have that experience. You definitely grow up a lot, and the benefits help set me up to have a good career and a better life than had I not joined. Lost a couple a friends that I had after I joined because “I changed”. By that, they mean while I was away training, overcoming hardships, going to new places, meeting new people, and having responsibilities and standards to uphold they continued working their same dead end jobs and having no priorities or direction, only chasing a life of pleasure and comfort and they don’t like me anymore. It is what it is. But a lot of the reasons you listed are part of why I joined.

I cut off all the friends I had for that reason. Just a bunch of people who peaked in highschool and do the same shit sitting around getting high and trying to drag everyone down. Broke up with my gf. When I say I have nothing to lose I mean it. Aside from my family I really have nothing in life.

You have to want nothing more in life than to be part of the spec war community. If there's any little doubt then you'll fail. Most of the spec war dudes I met on deployment said the physical part was the easiest, it was having the mental strength to keep pushing once you hit your limit that truly broke men. That's not to say you don't need to be in great shape, but you need to have a do or die mentality. Also, at least for the navy, if you fail you'll most likely become un-des which is fricking hell

If your still here OP look into Aircrew if you really want to join the Navy, not as intensive as specwar but still a good community to be a part of. Also you only get put on ships with your squadron for deployments and get switched out midway through, so you still get to see other countries without dealing with all the bullshit that people have to deal with on a ship. The leadership in squadrons is 1000x better than it would be on a ship with any other rate.

Former US Navy MA here. If you’re training for basic don’t overthink it. I was skinnyfat going in and couldn’t do a pull up. There will be asses there, too. If you look super jacked the instructors will frick with you (I.e. “OH SO YOU THINK YOURE READY FOR THIS RECRUIT?!) you will be in good shape by the end of training. Most people let themselves go at that point and drink too much, get fat and shit. You will partner up with someone for the push-ups/sit-ups per minute and will absolutely fudge their numbers for them and they will for you. Unless you get fricking Serpico and everyone hates that fricking guy.
Focus more on running. GL, op.

    USMC OCS poolie here.
I think your info is outdated. USMC moved to forearm planks last year, and the navy does planks too. This replaces sit ups (someone decided sit ups are bad for you). To improve plank time just plank every day and add 1 second every day. Planking is mostly mental. Aim for 20 secs MORE than the max score because you will cheat the stance at home

Running benefits from variety. I went from not being able to run two blocks to running 23min 3 miles in about 2 years (USMC does 3 miles). What worked for me was running 4 days a week.
One run should be timed 1.5 mile, one should be uphill, one should be longer--maybe 3-5 miles, and one should be sprinting/jogging intervals. Maybe do some fartleks too.
If you cannot run the whole thing hold out as long as possible then when you walk chose a point in the distance to start running again. Next time, force yourself to start running earlier until the whole route is running.

Push ups are about speed. When you go down, turn off your muscles and just let gravity take you. then quickly shoot back up. Dont go down too far.
to practice try some weighted push ups and just do them often. Push ups are great because you can do them all the time.

Most importantly get in contact with a recruiter. Even if you don't want to join now, MEPS will take some time, and by saying "I want to join in 6 months" then actually showing up in six months you will already be more reliable than most people. The recruiting station may have workout events where other people can push you.

I know people are going to fricking whine but:
    crossfit is your best bet
most of crossfit is high intensity circuit training, focused on endurance
basic training, from what I remember, is pretty much a lot of marching, especially with weight, for long periods of time
you won't get a lot of sleep either, so the best bet, work on your endurance

If you're joining the military because you wanna join, then do whatever
If you wanna go somewhere in life afterwards, join the Air Force

Yeah, don't. If you're in the US and want the structure and paycheck, apply to USBP and make like 5 times as much starting.

    Frick the military.
