140lbs front squats are more than enough enough unless you're a powershitter

You can always do bulgarian split squats, which are better for hypertrophy than back/front squats. Needing to do them with a 40kg dumbbell in each hand for reps in the hypertrophy range should need some time to accomplish.

      >Dude you need an olympic barbell to squat 500lbs otherwise you won't have any legs! Your quads can sense when you squat less than 500lbs and if they notice it, they just don't grow!
DB squats are perfectly fine to get good legs. Unless you want to be a pro bodybuilder or powershitter, that's all you need for your whole body.
People on here are so busy debating autistically about the most insignificant minutiae that they don't even lift.

Pic related are the cheapest adjustable dumbbells on amazon right now (without plates of course). They're 35 cm long and can hold at least 45.4 kg each (100lbs).

You can get more robust dumbbells for like 15-20 euros and load them with 150lbs each easily. The plates are the expensive part.

What a stupid take. A couple of dumbbells heavy enough allow you to replicate all sorts of lifts. The pullup bar and the ab roller are a nice addition, but not even essential. And you certainly don't need a "dip tower" or any gay bondage contraption like that. You want dips? Use 2 chairs, gaylord.

        Anonymous

I thought of using chairs for dips but a pull-up/dip tower worked for me during the pandemic.

          Anonymous

Dude, you could get the body 99% of IST aims for (otter mode or fight club mode) with just a barbell made of concrete like in those ghetto gym pictures. You don't need a lot of stuff, just get 2 dumbbells and a bench.

Chairs would've worked too, costed nothing and wouldn't have taken up any additional space. How much did you spend for that tower? And how much space does it occupy?

            Anonymous

probably like pic related size. was living with parents so I had to make do with whatever space I got. I got a used pull-up/dip tower for like under $100. Wobbles a lot but home gym equipment was scarce and had to grab whatever I can at that time when my gym closed during covid.

You don't need the ab roller, could skip the pullup bar too, and you can definitely skip the bench unless you really want to do meme shit like decline reverse bench flys; but are those minimalist? I don't fricking think so. Therefore, If it's only to press then a floor press is more than enough, you can get the same ROM as with a bench by doing the exercise unilaterally and bending your body to the side opposite of the dumbbell.
And if you think you're going to adjust the dumbbells between exercises you're only fooling yourself.

As for deadlifting with dumbbells, lmao. Single leg DB RDL are nothing but a cope, you're better off doing cleans and snatches.
But then why not get KBs instead of DBs?

      Anonymous

      >you can definitely skip the bench
A bench allows you better ROM, without having to do awkward shit like "doing the exercise unilaterally and bending your body to the side opposite of the dumbbell". What the frick?
Also, it's gonna make your workouts a lot quicker, since you can train both sides at once. And you can use heavier weights if you're in a symmetrical, more stable position.

      >And if you think you're going to adjust the dumbbells between exercises you're only fooling yourself.
      ??
How difficult is it to do drop sets by taking out a couple of plates every 2-3 sets? I always do it.

        Anonymous

        >a lot quicker
3 more sets with no added rest since it's unilateral. Wow, that's so worth it to save 2~4 minutes total!!! fricking genius you are.
        > And you can use heavier weights if you're in a symmetrical
So? inb4 hurrdurr more weight = more good
Also asymmetrical = stabilizer gainz. The only time you really need to bother with symmetrical is when you require more weights, so for squats and hinges.
        >drop sets
Ah, you're into meme shit I see. Unfortunately OP asked about a minimalist gym, which also means minimalist workouts unless you're a moron who thinks doing esoteric shit with a set of dumbbell is going to make a big difference.

I bought 3 pairs to do different exercises and keep them at stable weights. I only adjust them once every couple of weeks when I progressively overload.

        > I only adjust them once every couple of weeks when I progressively overload.
That's one way to do it, or you could just do more reps with the same weight. Admittedly that's the poverty option, but step loading is a thing.

          Anonymous

what a stupid piece of shit you are. and the worst part is that your kind of mongoloid always think you're smart. keep doing your shit version of exercises with only 60% of the weight I'm using because your moronic position makes it impossible to use more weight.

How fricking stupid do you have to be, seriously? I thought you were memeing but no, you are really this fricking stupid, aren't you? Too fricking stupid to understand that in a position like that you can use only a fraction of the weight you can use in a more stable position, thereby reducing the stress on the muscles and your gains. It's the reason why a barbell is more effective than dumbbells: more stability equals more load.

It's obvious, but not to you, because you're a fricking idiot.

Why not a full benchpress instead of a regular bench? And what about a squat rack?

  8. 2 years ago

Really good, you can skip the ab roller though.
If you want to get plates I would suggest you use oly plates and dumbbells and not 1 inch plates so you can upgrade to a rack and oly bar over time.
You can also just get walmart adjustable dumbbells for cheap.
Your next buys after that should be a dip stand, an EZ bar, a rack or squat stands and an oly bar.

If you have rings you don't need the bar or the ab roller. You can do the same movement as the ab roller with the rings by hanging them low and plenty others. Plus you can hang them high and get the same benefit as the bar.

I personally do rings, dumbbells and elliptical bike. The bike lets me do HIIT cardio workouts since I have a busted knee and can't run. Also allows me to pre fatigue my legs and hits the ass surprisingly well.

Perfect minimalistic gym shouls be 80lb dumbbells, rings and a patch of grass to run/sprint naked and myabe wrestle.

          Anonymous

That is a cardioglide. A 90s infomercial piece of exercise equipment that makes for a very good all-extremity sprinter actually. Notice the photograph I had the other one "the HealthRider" which is the competing brand, but couldn't get enough resistance to dump the energy the way I like. HealthRider could go for Tabata, but I'm doing high rest max efforts 4-7 second sprints. I tried to tie weights to the HealthRider (notice the strap near wall) but it was a no go.

So I've got the cardioglide going on the max resistance with the extra rubber bands from goodwill wrapped around it obviously for additional resistance.

It's this machine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwX01woWcAU rigged for sprints. See I've got it weighted down with the bar and weights

It exists, however they're expensive as shit. You could easily get a power cage, barbell, and plates for the price. Powerblocks, Ironmaster. If you're willing to go a little lighter, then NÜOBELL are the new hotness.

But again, they are all insanely expensive, and this list is for obvious destitute-tier homegym bros. 100% agree that whoever made that list does not even lift because there's no good way to stack olympic-sized plates onto a dumbbell handle up to that weight and not be fricking too moronic to actually use.

Again, what the frick are you guys talking about?

Never would I have thought that dumbbells of all things might be controversial. 10 kg disks are obviously wide, but not so wide as to make it impossible to handle them. Mine have a diameter of just 27 cm.

don't you understand? it's impossible to build muscle with standard plates. they are too light. 5 pounds of standard plates is like 1 pound of oly. Plus they only go up to 90 lbs. Everyone knows you don't build any muscle until you're lifting 350 lbs for reps.

I'm your height and I have no idea what kind of plates they produce in your country. Here, a 5 kg plate is 20 cm wide. That's it. Since the handle is right in the middle, that means that you only have to worry about 10 cm of metal. How does that prevent any kind of lift?

They do tend to work loose. It can be anywhere from middle of a set to 3-4 sets before they do, but you have to re tighten them. I've never seen them come loose enough to be dangerous, but yeah they kinda suck. Unfortunately all the alternatives have major drawbacks. fancier sets are multiple times the price and less versatile. Olympic dumbbells are frickoff huge and have the same collar issues.

Yes? There are supports you can drill into your ceiling. Or you can hang them from a pull-up bar if you're a rentgay. I hung them from stairs in my old flat.

        >Just fill a big backpack gayet.
Decent option if you don't have money, but the weight distribution is going to frick up your balance (and back) if you load it too much.

  34. 2 years ago

I started off with this, it's perfectly fine for a beginner. Eventually you should buy a cage/olympic bar and some weights because you can really tell the difference in your workouts.

You're not gonna grow with a dumbbell only setup. Like I said, if you're a beginner trying to get that initial gym momentum going, a pair of dbs, adjustable bench and a pullup bar are a great investment. You can do all sorts of workouts that'll mostly help you lose weight and gain muscle definition. However if you're interested in more serious strength training/muscle growth you need an olympic bar and at least 3 plates per side

So even though dumbbells allow for greater ROM, greater stretch, more stabilizers, etc., a barbell is still superior by virtue of the simple amount of weight it allows you to move?

I suspected as much, just want to be sure.

treat this like it's a sled. max out your press on the handles 5-10 seconds. that's a good minimalist home gym

the standard copper schwinn allows for huge resistance levels largely ungettable from pricier, newer plastic brands. wear swim shoes if your feet don't fit the stirrups

Are adjustable dumbells worth it? I was thinking of buying some Ironmasters. Or maybe buying a Powertech workbench levergym as it's quite small. Does anyone have one or are they a waste of money?

I think you'll get more out of the leverage gym since it allows you to perform most compound and isolation exercises. And their iso-lateral technology is similar to the hammer strength machines

I'm just going to give my home gym requirements:
    >Power rack with safeties and pull-up bar
    >adjustable bench
    >Barbell
    >Hex bar
    >600lbs of plates
    >adj dumbells
    >I like to use bands for bicep/tricep work so bands
    >Some form of conditioning equipment. I like the assault bike
    >ab roller
    Optional
    >single cable tower. Tricep push downs, lateral raises, cable fly, etc... are all highly stimulating but low fatigue exercises. Yeah, I can do nothing but skull crushers and db flys, but the cables are just better. I'm willing to spend $1k to not frick up my elbows.

      >Adjustable dumbbells instead of barbell and weights
      u stoopit
      >no power cage
they take up like 6'x6' space on the floor and you only need like 8' of space for the barbell its pretty minimalist
      >AB ROLLER LMAO
absolute waste, you can do a million ab exercises without one
      >pullup bar
      power cage works as one

      >power rack(pullup bar included)
      >barbell
      >20kg plates - as many as you need
      >10kg, 5kg, 2,5kg and 1,25kg plates(one pair of each)
      >landmine/ tennis ball for t-bar rows/belt-squats/ presses etc.
      >Dip station
      >dip belt
If you DIY or spend your money on a machine you can also get plate-loaded cable machine for direct arm work.

obviously these are better. only a moron would deny that. However they take up permanent floor space and the power rack + barbell (before any weights) cost as much as the whole setup in the OP

dumbbells on the stairs and drive with the feet (like running in place) as a makeshift sled. p.s. does anyone know how much force would collapse the staircase on that one?

Also taking up sawing is a great idea and nearly free. 20 seconds buckwilding the hand saw rotate arms repeat is a helluva at home workout

      Like 1.8 AA (average americans).

Add a large (seabags make good shells) sandbag and enough cores to get it to ~150 pounds and do basic ass squats, good mornings/RDLs, or split squats.
In fact I skipped the bench and dumbbells and just got a doorframe pullup bar and rings, then made a bunch of sandbag cores to put in a seabag or bookbag.
My legs lacked behind a little (but still grew while my gym was shut down) but I made pretty fricking good progress doing weighted pullups, weighted ring dips, flyes, and later cable stuff with some concrete weights I made.
I have a barbell and power rack now though and have been making even better progress after I stalled and read "the muscle and strength pyramid" and getting a little more serious.

    I need help, homegymbros.
I want to buy a power rack, the problem is I'm from Brazil and most power racks here under $1000 are shit tier (actually even the $2000 ones are shit tier over here because Brazilians love to use shitty steel)

What should I look out for when buying one?

The most decent one I've found so far is pic related:

They claim the steel tubes are Gauge 14 (2mm) 50 cm x 50 cm
The space between holes is 7cm
    Weights 90 kg
    2.20m tall x 1.16m wide x 1.22m deep
    $600

The seller said this can stand up to 1100 pounds but I seriously doubt it given this is gauge 14 steel.
What are the chances they're bullshitting me and I will end up dead under a pile of steel?

Someone on youtube took a cheap amazon power rack and put it under a stress test by dropping a barbell onto the safeties loaded with large weight. The rack and safeties stood fine, barbell got bent.
If you can do without the safeties and can just drop the barbell onto the floor, squat rack would be cheaper alternative

Too much money for not enough utility. Get a pullups/dip tower and then 2-3 kettlebells. Pull ups, dips, swings, snatches, and goblet squats will make you look good and be healthy for less cost than what you planned.

If you want to be a real cheap Black person, you can get just a pullup bar and some gymnastics rings, and that'll give you solid progression on a lot of bodyweight exercises. You won't really have anything good for legs, though.
