What's the point of being 50-0 champion if any drunk taxi driver can take you out with a body slam?

The average person has no idea how to grapple properly. Floyd would also shatter an untrained person’s jaw with one punch after they inevitably drop their guard. But the point of being a 50-0 unbeatable champion is so that you never get in a real fight, you have 400lb bodyguards to snap them in half before they get anywhere near you.

Obviously Mayweather, like ANY trained professional fighter, would mop the floor with most aggressors in a street fight situation.

Boxing is a very controlled (boring) sport with limited options for what each fighter can legally do. Can't use leg strikes. Can't go to the ground. Can't even grab the other fucker. It's totally retarded and has no resemblance to a real fight, but even so Mayweather is still a trained professional fighter and will easily manage attackers within a reasonable weight.

Probably not. The man's hands are infamously destroyed. Which is a real testament to how good he actually is. Being able to not only overcome that to be victorious, but to it do is so thoroughly.

obvy floyd would get fucked up by 200lb+ guys,
but at the end of the day,
you could get hit by a car and die
or get shot by some random jihadi
personally, i don't box b/c it gives severe brain damage,

Kek professional boxer can't even hit him how the fuck as an average mf gonna grave him and take him down. You would get rocked 5 times before you even get his legs and if the 1st or second punch didn't lay you out the 3rd and 4th will. Lightning fast boxers like Pacquiao have hot nothing but air trying to take his head off. Good luck trying to close distance with him

what happens if you kick a boxer in the knee or stomach or whatever
i feel like generally they aren't expecting that

Leg kicks aren't strong enough to cause disabling damage quickly, they do damage over time. In professional fights, when they are used, they often impair the mobility in the later rounds. If an untrained guy tries to leg kick a boxer, the latter can just shrug it off and knock him out, same with mid section kicks. If instead you take a kickboxer or a muay thai fighter, it depends on the ability of the fighters. The boxer has the better hands so in the close range they are extremely dangerous and might KO their opponent. In the long range, kickboxers are more familiar with distance managment because boxers don't have to worry about such long limbs in their fights, so their path to victory is to try to keep the distance and punish the boxer's legs which aren't conditioned to take many leg kicks at all. If you are interested you can watch the Rick Roufus vs Changpuek fight. Roufus was an american kickboxing champ (a discipline that didn't allow leg kicks), with very good boxing and taekwondo while Changpuek was a tall muay thai fighter that had to travel the world because he couldn't find fighters his own size back in Thailand.

Re-re-read again, I'm strictly talking about leg kicks

                Anonymous

leg kicks can still be pretty immediately damaging if you target the side of the knee instead of the thigh (illegal in most competition fights).

                Anonymous

My point is they aren't immediatly disabling. For immediately disabling I mean something that will stop the fight immediately, like a knock out, a broken leg or arm, passing out from strangulation etc. You can stop someone with leg kicks but you need a ton of them to cause so much tendon/nerve/muscle damage that they can't stand on their legs anymore. In the original hypothetical the anon was asking about how a boxer would react from being kicked in the legs, the answer is that it already happened in mixed disciplines fights so we can deduct a conclusion: if you are an untrained individual the boxer would just tank your kicks and heem you, if you are a kickboxer it would be a real fight that depends on the fighters' abilities.

Agree with this. With the exception that a fast/accurate teep to the nuts in a streetfight would be devastating and can be trained within 2 months.

It takes training to throw a powerful non-telegraphed kick (unless you're going for a nutshot, aka krav maga 101).

    Counterpoint:

Boxing beats grappling or BJJ 99/100 for actual self defense. The type of fight you are talking about isn't what you are actually worried about, some guy who's going to fight one on one and you'll wake up with sore ribs and a bruised ego. What you're really worried about (or should be) is: a) a group of guys; or b) a guy with a weapon. In either scenario grappling is a death sentence. In (a) his mates are going to use your head like a football or break a bottle over your head and in (b) he is going to turn your stomach into swiss cheese. At least with boxing or other striking disciplines you have a chance to stun and run. Most of the time you are still fucked but trying to grapple or wrestle in either of the scenarios that are most dangerous is literal suicide, boxing gives you whatever fighting chance exists at the time. Best of course is to learn a bit of both so you can hold your own in any type of fights but for real self defence you should be spending the majority of your time learning boxing, kickboxing etc. MMA isn't real life.

As a competitive boxer I have learned a few things. In no particular order:
    1. Everybody gets caught.
    2. I fight at LH/Cruiser at the ammy level. I have had the opportunity to spar with a top 25 World ranked professional featherweight who absolutely wrecked me. Weight classes may exist for a reason, but there are levels to fighting that if you have never actually done it you just can't comprehend. Some people are so many skill levels above you that even with a large size advantage you will literally feel like a child fighting a grown man. It is absurdly humbling.
    3. For reasons like this, you never really know what anybody is capable of until you know. Confidence in your abilities is a very good thing but you should never walk around cocky, you never know what your opponent is capable of.
For self-defense whatever martial art you like enough to actually practice is the best one for you. Boxing has an infinitely High skill ceiling but a relatively low floor, there is a gem in almost every town, and there are a lot worse things you could learn to defend yourself than boxing. It is no Panacea for all circumstances, but it has some definite advantages. But for the love of God don't approach self defense like it's a video game or rock paper scissors, like some Styles just by default beat other ones. And to wrap up I will reiterate the first point, everybody gets caught. Be humble and don't go looking for trouble.
