Jellyfish stings aren't too bad - as long as it's not a dangerous one.
Sharks usually won't eat you - or even be aware of your existence.

Maybe next time he should lose some weight before going in so he doesn't look like a fricking seal.

This. The whole "muh sharky warky cuddle buns, they don't wanna get you, the are sleeky weeky bullet boys" is a bunch of idealogue fat scientists with homosexual hippie tendancies who started pushing that dishonest rhetoric because they thought shatk movies would hypnotize those oh so loathsome un-universitified peons of the world into extincting sharks. It is probably the worst advice on Earth. Then they go on to tell you how they're the perfect killing machines, but not for you oh lesser than us humans, just for everything else. Oh all thesr people mangled, eaten, chomped up? Why, they're just mistaken for a seal of course. Of those people getting bitten on shark safaris? Well it's their fault for having the gall to go in the ocean, sharks aren't dangerous, you gotta believe us.

Bro, if you're paying a hundred a month on the gym and aren't even using the pool, it's time to invest in a home gym. For two years' membership, you can get a full squat rack, weights, dumbbells, and bench.

Do I just suck at it or is it not a really good form of cardio?
I can't really keep my heart rate up while swimming (basically the same for cycling) or if it go full power I am dead after 100m... maybe you need to find some healthy middle ground between just floating at the speed of all the grannys and going full throttle, but at least I fricking can't...
When running I find it pretty easy to always stay at a good heart rate.

swimming is much more technique-dependant so probably that's your issue, if you don't swim well it'll be much harder to keep up a decent pace

I’d love to, but my gym only had 3 lanes and there’s always old people gatekeeping them by hogging them for like an hour. Doesn’t matter what time I go, it’s rare to ever get an open lane. I’m not trying to stand around for that long just to swim for 15 minutes.
