My gf has started to get a lot of anxiety about me benching alone in our home gym.

My gf has started to get a lot of anxiety about me benching alone in our home gym. I've failed reps before and I never use clips so I either roll of shame or dump the weight. I use the safety bars in the rack too but they obviously have to be below my chest

I have never had any reason to doubt my ability to bench safely but her anxiety has gotten in my head. Since then I've constantly been failing reps I know I can handle. I keep imagining final destination esque ways I could murder myself benching and it's fricking with me

Is there any truly foolproof way to bench safely alone?

What way do I curl to target my pecs?

You take your bench and put it in the squat rack, place the safeties at a height that you can do most of your ROM but not get killed, just hurt, if you drop the bar.

Did you buy them separately? The ones on mine thread through the holes and they are either way above bench depth for me or far enough below that they don't do much to not squish me

I really can’t think of a solution that doesn’t require money unless you start doing dips instead

        >half reps
Who gives a shit if you stop a few inches from your chest

Because it's not just stopping a few inches from my chest.

If you go all the way down with bad safetiesn up, not only are not you hitting your chest. Youre also clanging against the safeties which ruins your bar path.
If you avoid the clange, now your not hitting your chest even more as you have to stop higher to avoid the safeties

What? Just set the safeties up a couple cm below your chest.

Do not buy the ones in this pic. These safeties do not connect to the base. I didn't save the webm but there was this one video where the guy's bar went underneath the safeties and he got pinned even worse.

Are they actually high enough to save your life?

OP just stop. Do dumbbell press, weighted pushups or figure out a way to make it impossible for the weight to uhh... kill you.

    Girls shouldn't bench in public.

    >At the gym with one of my bros (he doesn't know it but he is) and he brought his gf with him
    >They're doing bench day
    >I do something and turn around
    >I have a full view of his gf on the bench, she's got her legs spread wide doing leg drive, her ass is slightly lifted up like she's offering her groin up to anyone, and I can see the clear outline of her vulva and vegana
    >Immediately turn around embarrassed
If it wasn't me it would've been someone else.

Dumbbells are better at hitting chest and also make your barbell numbers skyrocket as long as you do some barbell work occasionally to keep technique locked in.

There's a reason your girlfriend is nervous OP, it's legitimately not uncommon for someone to kick it from a barbell to the neck. Use safeties with a prominent arch (not scorpion if pre 2023 shit ofc) so you can still touch chest or stop being anti-social.

If you don't use clips you can just dump the weight. The only unsafe thing is dropping the weight which would be solved if you set the pin at or *just* above your chest. I've modified all my lifts to be pin presses. They're actually harder too because you lose the stretch reflex on at least the first rep but otherwise it's the safety of a machine without me buying a machine.

Just don't use bands. I've dumped 405+ a few times in my home gym. One time for stuck under 225 with about 4 or 5 bands on each side. That was tough to wiggle out of.

Large area boxes that are the height of the bench. The plates won't touch them if your form is spot on, but even if they do, it's not enough to actually hurt your gains. If you fail a rep, just let the weight come down slowly and let the plates touch the boxes and let your body relax. You'll be able to slide out under it. Your chest won't cave in just like that unless you actually dropped 500lbs across it. and that would be from full height. Your main concern is getting your throat pinched, which the boxes combined with the plates will provide enough of a buffer to prevent.

Just make boxes from 4x4s for the legs and and 1/2" plywood for the surface. If you're using a lot of weight, use 3/4" plywood. And if you don't know how to make a box-like platform like that, go to IST

??? Below your chest, above your neck, just let it slide upwards and slide out. What's the issue?

Do incline bench and higher reps.
When you fail the bar naturally rolls down your body, onto your hips and you rack pull it off.

Wtf is the point of having spotters if they let this happen?

I was going to ask the same thing. There are 2 guys with their arms clearly outstretched to spot and somehow this still happened? Thank god he's a powershitter with a thick layer of blubber to cushion the impact, otherwise it could have been fatal.

Wtf is the point of having spotters if they let this happen?

Both of you are morons, he clearly dropped the bar while it was at the very top, the spotters aren't there to save you from that, no spotter will curl your bench when you drop it like that, they're there to pick up the bar from your chest if you fail the rep(as in, a slow controlled descent)

this is the problem that really needs addressing. letting a womans anxiety become your anxiety is p much a death sentence. even if there is no foolproof way to becnh safely you should do it anyway because as a man with testosterone you should have a proclivity towards dangerous activity

it's a rack with heavy duty full length safeties?
Just set the safeties about 1" or 2" lower than the top of your chest. Mark your bench position so you never accidentally untrack over your head.
Now your neck and skull are protected. Most of your organs are protected. Any somewhat controlled failure and you maybe bruise a rib. Even if your tricep tore in one arm you'd probably at worst break a few ribs because the rail wouldn't let the barbell go down enough to compress your heart.

Worst case scenario with safety rails 2" under top of chest is you pass out suddenly, the bar hits you right between heart beats, and you have a heart attack.

The odds of that are so rare it's not worth thinking about. She can get one of those watches with medical alerts if she's worried.

    why not weighted push ups?
needs less weight and if you use non-lifting-weights it'll be hanging, so it's quite safe
