My therapist told me I should join an drama club so I can learn to express my emotions. Am I being autistic, or is that a really rude thing to tell someone?

    >so I can learn to express my emotions
You don't learn to express your emotions by acting out another character's emotions.
Is your therapist a walking vegana?

    Huff that.

I'm so tired of snowflakes bros. How is it rude? Just go and do it. Aren't you there for your therapist's opinion? If you don't find them useful, get a new therapist or a new form of therapy. If they have been good at their job so far. Go try and act in some plays. You'll probably develop socially which a skill you are lacking. God help me. These motherfricking snowflakes and there motherfricking ferlings

      >How is it rude?
Ok, good. This is what I wanted to know. I think I am literally autistic, or maybe schizoid. I literally cannot feel some emotions. I have been acting strangely this past week, but I had no idea why and was really confused. I just realized today that I was really 'upset' that my therapist said this, and I have been literally obsessed with proving him wrong. Except I never literally 'felt' upset. I just acted as an upset person acts.
So my point is, because my emotional landscape is so desolate and inscrutable, I wanted outside evidence about whether or not I was being reasonable. And I guess I wasn't, and I am willing to admit I'm wrong.
I just don't him to gaslight me into thinking that something that isn't okay actually is okay. But I trust IST and won't make a big deal out of this.

You're trying to determine if it's rude? I'm a bit tactless or so I've been told, but I don't think that's the therapist's goal. That would be counterproductive for him to say something intentionally rude. Anyway, I don't know if drama club is going to help you or not, but you can at least get a feel for how characters (which are often based on real people) respond to each other. You may be able to use your autism to acutely analyze and formulate socially normal interactions based on your study. Avoid musicals, unless you've always wanted life to happen in song. And who knows, maybe some role will force you to express feelings in a cathartic way. I wouldn't expect this, but it's possible.

“Heard joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor...I am Pagliacci.”

Find a new therapist immediately. Being serious here. A therapist that suggests weird shit is literally on par with a fat doctor telling you how to diet. good luck Anon.

If you want your therapist to actually help you, it quires them to be honest with you. This relationship necessitates that you will hear some very "rude" things.

I agree. But humans have an infinite capacity to conjure up ego defenses which shield them from the truth.

      >if your goals are to have emotions then you must have passion
I already have emotions, I simply cannot access them. It's sort of like a third party is controlling me against my will, but that third party definitely has emotions.

I know, but I am paranoid that I have an abusive therapist who is telling me these things because he has his own hang-ups. That's obviously not true. But I was behaving as though I thought that was true.

I'm autistic and my therapist mom always sent me to theater camps when I was little. I wonder if that's why lol. I never expressed any interest in the theater or acting but my mom would always sign me up for them. I guess it did help at least I can pretend to be normal pretty well when I have to.

Well if you have autism like me you may not be expressing/conveying your "emotions" with normal facial expressions and body language. It can be interpreted as creepy or if people think you're angry at them everytime you find someone funny, that's not good.
It also helps recognize and interpret other peoples posturing and expressions, although everyone may be over expressing at a club like that.
I don't know if any of this applies to you.

Autists are extremely emotional (cf. "nerd rage"), their problem is they don't show the correct emotions for a situation.

Has your therapist ever been a part of a drama club? Does he understand the inner workings of one? Has he studied about the therapeutical benefits of being part of one? If the answer to all of these questions is no - and it probably is - then guess what: this guy decides things that affect your future and your well being based on whims. If that’s the case, ditch him.
