Tiny neck, small traps, and broad shoulders... always looks like some skinny kid photoshopped his head and neck onto the photo. Having a thick neck, picrel, is incredibly imposing

can confirm that neck training works but I still wonder why I never got an acceptable neck just from lifting while others don't lift at all and have necks wider than their skulls.

Mostly genetics, and they also probably did stuff like lots of OHP, which works upper traps. Neck rotations is all you need for a thick neck.

is dumbbell press a good substitute for it?

wrong, OHP doesn't do shit for neck hypertrophy. Because your neck muscle fibers are not under tension in a stretched position.

To achieve that, you need a lift that pulls your scapulas and collarbones down, ripping appart your traps and sternocleidomastoids while you're trying to keep your head up.

ie : deadlifts, farmers walk, strongman shit.

No wonder why strongmen have the biggest necks of all strength athletes and calisthenics gays are the opposite.
if handstand push ups (their OHP equivalent) gave you bigger necks, all the calisthenics twinks would look like bulls.

you don't need to isolate it for aesthetics, all you need is the tension from squats and deadlifts
if you do contact sports, sure, go ahead

      https://www.strongerbyscience.com/neck-strength-training/
      >researchers conducted a study on this matter to investigate whether shrugs, rows, and deadlift variations are sufficient to increase neck muscle size. Conley et al assessed two groups of recreationally active subjects that performed four full body resistance training sessions per week for 12 weeks where each exercise was trained for 3-5 sets of 3-10 reps (17). The exercises included squats, push presses, bench presses, midthigh pulls (i.e., above the knee rack pulls), Romanian deadlifts, crunches, bent over rows, and shrugs. While one group exclusively performed this traditional resistance training protocol, the other group additionally performed a weighted neck extension exercise for 3 sets of 10 reps three times per week. Before and after the intervention, neck extension strength (i.e., max load for 3 sets of 10 reps) was tested, and MRI cross sectional area measurements were performed at nine neck muscle sites (reflecting 13 total muscles), including the trapezius and levator scapulae.
      >Following the intervention, the group that incorporated the neck extension exercise experienced significant increases in neck extension strength and neck muscle size at six of the nine sites measured, while no increase in neck strength or muscle size at any site occurred in the other group. Two of the muscle sites consisted of neck flexor muscles, so it is unsurprising that they did not exhibit any change for either group.

idk, I've gone from auschwitz mode to goal body multiple times, one with neck isolation, once without, I did manage to get a decent neck both times, I don't think it's necessary but it could be my genetics or that I lift compound to failure more often
