Get small yard with grass. Don't use any chemicals on grass. Let it grow and don't mow unless it's ridiculously high. Water heavy at night for worms, they love it and makes soil great. Have 5 hens. Clip their wings so they don't jump the fence. Boom free eggs

Find a farmer who will sell u some via facebook or social media. Check your local groups or just put out a post asking for farmers. Failing that go to a livestock auction an prepare to be ripped off. A hen costs 5 to 20 dollars depending on age and variety. To stop predators you literally just keep them in a SECURE and relatively clean coop. Feed them “growers pellets” (get these at a farm supply shop) until they’re about 24 weeks old. At 24 weeks switch them to “layers pellets.” Make sure the feeder is either one like pic rel or suspended from the coop ceiling to stop rats (same goes for water Supplement their diet with eggshells for calcium, grass (that isn’t covered in weed killer), lettuce.

If they look healthy and “chatter” then they’re happy and you’re doing a good job. You can let them out for exercise and to forage (also if they shit on your potato patch, it’s good fertiliser) but make sure you master picking them up first (tame them by rewarding them with a blade of grass when they sit in your arms) as they can be difficult to get back in the coop and remember that they can fly for a few yards.I recommend white Sussex bantams as they’re small and docile but lay almost every day. Get at least 4. If you get at least 10 you can make a decent profit. Rhode Islands are also cute.

        T. Guy who pooled money with his father to start keeping chickens and keeps getting shit advice

        >they don’t lay every day
Yes but they lay almost every day maybe yours are just undernourished. Egg production tapers off as the chicken gets older but then you can always get more chickens and they’ll still lay eggs for a while just not as frequently

I bought some online for $10 each including shipping. But I recently found some at a local feed and seed store for only $5. I have 5 breeds and Red stars have consistently given me an egg a day even in the winter when the others stopped.

Yurop had some bird flu. They slaughtered so many birds the egg prise rose 52%. I nearly shat myself on the checkout, when I saw my 15eggs costing 7 bucks instead of 3.50. I bought 4 cartons

The bird flu is fake af. It’s COVID for birds. They even use the same faulty PCR tests. They just want to stranglehold small farmers to give up so big food can take over everything indefinitely.

They protect from wildlife like foxes and raccoons. That said, and I am talking out of my ass I think, you can’t have two roosters in the same pen because they will kill each other in a fight for dominance. If he has two complete separate pens and roosts then it is golden. You can also have a guard goose but it has to be raised by a chicken from an egg.

Ideally one has to become soup soon but I like them too much to do em dirty (don’t name what you’ll kill)
Having one is fun and beneficial at times since they look out for the hens in terms of food and danger and can fertilize eggs if you want to hatch chicks.
Surprisingly enough they haven’t really beefed all that much just little fights here and there. They share the hens and everyone gets fed good so I figure that’s enough for them. Pic related is one of my roosters and his favorite hen

I've been doing some research on personal urban homesteading. Ducks are superior to chickens for eggs
      >eggs have more protein and fat, are larger
      >also taste better and very useful in cooking
      >lay eggs more frequently
      >lay eggs for 9-10 years instead of 2 years
      >smarter and have personalities, are social creatures
      >their shit is gold for soil
      >their meat is also fantastic eating
      >you can plant some orchard trees to drop berries and have a self sustaining cycle
      >not as noisy
      etc. Ducks are superior chickens

Ducks are much harder to take care of. And also the point of chickens is to get the eggs, and in a couple years butcher them for food. Ducks live too long for that. Also, they aren't good to be kept cooped up like chickens.
You aren't some genius, there's a reason most farmers do chickens. Also ducks are way more expensive vet wise.

In most euro countries you can rent plots to grow food and keep chickens on from the local authorities like pic rel. Is this not the case in America? In my country (England) it generally costs about $70 a year and you get about 1/8 to 1/4 of an acre to grow food on. This is more than enough to grow a lot of food on, meaning you need to spend far less of your money on food from stores.

This applies in the west and in post-communist states (where people are a lot more reliant on these plots) btw.

Sounds like the prices in the US are only getting affected then because US farmers are choosing to export larger portions of their stock to Europe instead of keeping it local, taking advantage of the higher prices they can fetch over there, while creating scarcity in the US, and therefore jacking up US prices, too.

And they get millions in taxpayer subsidies why?

Because if your farmers don't get subsidies your entire national food supply goes bankrupt and you become reliant on brazilian basedbean farmers who do get subsidies

No, eggs have gone up because massive swaths of farmland have been bought up by corporate entities who want to turn all farmland into cheap veggie sludge slop product. It easier to farm and requires less workers for amounts of food. You are now the product. So called bird flu has happened countless times in the past and I never remember the price spiking. I never remember it because it never happened. You are witnessing a synthetic lowering of demand for an excuse to take away your supply of healthy food. Remember, you are now a product and you just need enough energy to get to work in the morning to slave away and struggle to pay your rent.

            >The avian flu outbreak that has more than doubled egg prices across the country has also led to the death of more than 48 million birds in a dozen states, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

            https://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jun/07/eggs-texas-supermarket-rationing-bird-flu

            >A large Texas supermarket chain has begun rationing eggs, in the face of a growing national shortage brought about by an outbreak of avian flu.

            >Customers shopping at many outlets of the H-E-B chain of supermarkets have been confronted by notices telling them they are restricted to buying three cartons of a dozen eggs per shopper.

The difference this time is that the bird flu squeeze on supply is coming at the same time as a 40 year-high of inflation on all parts of the economy, including bird feed.

How are you processing it? I usually use the front quarters for small roasts and split the rear quarters into half large roasts and half steaks. Backstrap can be done either way as well. Then any scraps trimmed off the neck and body along with anything extra from the legs gets me at least ten pounds of burger meat even off a small doe.

You just have to get creative with it, like any other meat. Definitely don’t discount throwing a roast in a crockpot with some potatoes and carrots and shit, it’s fricking heavenly. Chili’s a good one too.
