now that i'm actually engaging in critical thinking i'm starting to realize pic related actually kind of sucks. Twin peaks in the early 90s had a great atmosphere and all the characters were interesting to watch, even during season 2. This season is like taking a tour of a fricking dementia village. The only entertaining actor is Kyle McLaughlin, and the only decent actors are the ones under 60 years old (which there are very few). The majority of the plot of this season is just David Lynch complaining about how his show got cancelled. If I wanted to watch a show full of old people I'd watch fricking Golden Girls. Frick this season. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

It's the greatest piece of visual art ever. An 18 hour poignant shitpost by an auteur doing a victory lap of his entire career.

The point is that a traditional Season 3 wouldn't have been able to capture the magic of the original show, so he went in the complete opposite direction and created a great piece of anti-nostalgia. You'd seriously have preferred a traditional Season 3, just Cooper going on wacky hijinks again and solving mysteries? That's fricking terrible, that bit was played out already.

I rewatched the entire series recently. Season 3 definitely captures the magic of the original series, just in the most roundabout way possible. Not saying you're entirely wrong, just that The Return is in fact a proper Season 3.

      >so he went in the complete opposite direction and created a great piece of anti-nostalgia.

exactly. that's the point of dougie. everyone wanted a triumphant return of agent cooper, instead we got endless episosed of dougie bumbling about. and it was beautiful

Gonna just mention again for everybody the whole Dougie story is a repurposing of a comedy script Lynch wrote for Steve Martin back in the 80s called One Saliva Bubble.

yeah it's a jacques tati homage but S03 kept teasing us making us think dougie would finally snap back into cooper and he never does until the penultimate episode, it felt like lynch fricking with reddit nostalgiagays, it's the kind of thing he would do

I thought it was Ronnie Rocket?
Either way, that's the purpose (in part) of S3: Lynch (and presumably Frost too) knew this was their last chance to get a big budget to do anything, so they shoehorned in all their favourite old ideas that never got greenlit
          >Proof: none
And they also riffed on the idea of doing a show that cannot exist, which is what Twin Peaks is after Laura Palmer's murder gets solved
And they also trousered millions and trolled the audience, overall I give it an 8 or 9 out of 10

      >a traditional Season 3, just Cooper going on wacky hijinks again and solving mysteries?
Such a thing was rendered impossible when the central mystery was solved, and the show became a contradiction in terms at that point, as season 2 demonstrated.

    >Twin peaks in the early 90s had a great atmosphere and all the characters were interesting to watch
    Correct
    >even during season 2.
Incorrect. James became interminable, as did Jose and anything to do with Jose. And I'm saying this as an apologist who even enjoy Nadine's superwoman arc and Ben Horne's civil war arc. But Season 2 was a lot of the dog chasing its own tail, trying and failing to be Lynch when he's not there, cozy but coasting off the goodwill of the first 17 or so episodes.

Season 3 is all the meat and potatoes of what made those first two seasons work. It doesn't have the cozy 90s soap atmosphere anymore, but it's the pure surrealist experience of something like Mulholland Drive but with all the familiar Twin Peaks trappings.

I do have complaints of course. I wish Heather Graham had been able to participate, same with the original Sherrif Truman (though I loved Forster). But overall when it comes down to it, most of my favourite memories of this show come from Season 3. Even if it's just little things like the guy who gets his coffee stolen by Dougie, tries the green tea latte and discovers his new favourite drink. Or the entirety of "Gotta Light". As someone who didn't care for Inland Empire, if this is Lynch's final statement as an artist, it was the ultimate swan song. Everything his career had been building to.

For me, Dougie is the linchpin to season 3. I love the bright and clear Vegas setting and how he makes peoples lives better through bumbling about and being lucky. I could have used a couple more moments of sudden competence like he when awakes momentarily to say Tom Sizemore's character is lying or when he defeats the dwarf in battle but that's a minor issue.

OP is correct though, even with the excuse that "the return" was impossible etc etc, much of season 3 is still boring, doesn't work. Many flaws, Mr. C was miscast

yeah well its truly lynchian to have a meandering dreamlike plot with a few moments of clarity and in the end a lot is unresolved and you have no answers so if you dont like that you got filtered.
