      >SS is still the way to go
SS is like recommending someone eat only ground beef, rice and broccoli. Sure it'll work but it's a pretty shit diet that is missing a lot of micronutrients and variety of a balanced diet needed for long term health and progress.

        Anonymous

In this diet example you would only eat that way until you have built the habit and discipline of eating clean and then you can add more foods for variety.

          Anonymous

Exactly. Like I said it will work but it's not exactly a good diet when you could just eat a better diet from the get go.

          Anonymous

As other anon said, sometimes it's easier to break a new habit into smaller, more surmountable steps.

For example, first you start a consistent meal routine, even if it's not perfect, then after you've demonstrated compliance to regular food prep, not skipping meals, portion awareness, THEN you refine the diet. Or another example, do a basic weightlifting routine to develop compliance to a routine, consistency at the gym, and safety/comfort with free weight movements, then when all those habits will hold steady, THEN you move your focus to refining the training in terms of exercise and rep range variation, different splits, experimenting with frequency and volume, etc.

What's wrong with this, maybe not exclusively but say for lunch most days with variety at dinner?

SS is good if you're new and skinny, just don't listen to mark about gaining weight.
Weight gain should be slow and gradual; don't gain weight as fast.
Gain 2-4lbs a month; after 6-8 months then switch to a different program.

    GZCLP

I think GZCLP is really good, but not the best for a total beginner. I think the best approach for a total noodle arm beginner is:
      >1 month of easy PPL 3x a week to learn how to gym
      >3 months of SL to get practice in with the 4 main compound lifts + barbell row
      >then do GZCLP until good weights are reached

I would still recommend it, just not for a long time.

Sure everyone benefits from strength but you'll look DYEL until 3 years into a strength focused program.

Plebbit dropped SS/SL for largely political reasons, dude who wrote up the "why we don't like SS/SL" said as much, that the main reason he doesn't want people doing SS/SL is he figures rippetoe and mehdi hate women.

I think Christian Thibaudeau was suggesting that a routine with a higher rep range and more volume would probably be better for a beginner because you get to practice the lifts a lot more and it kind of makes sense. Sure, you're not making max strength gains but with more reps overall you are improving technique and mind muscle connection much more so than with SS for example.

      Anonymous

You are essentially with high reps forcing more blood into your system to the place your focusing on and working your CNS that way rather than busting joints etc over and over with heavy weights which can be hard for a lot of people. I would say until you can lift the barbell about 20 reps safely and controlled don't bother adding weight.

      Anonymous

Rep ranges too high makes it more likely you'll ditch the set due to lactic acid and the lighter weight means you can get away with just "moving" the bar instead of consciously setting up everything perfect then contracting. The noob is getting his practice in with multiple sets and higher frequency and once they learn how to not lift like an utter pussy they can swap into bodybuilding.

Truth is, I don't know anymore. Pick something, whatever, and stick with it. Be constant, eat meat and veggies, and sleep. That's literally all you need. Don't end up like me that's still starting from square one after all these years, you 18-24yo.

I just turned 29 and wasted my entire youth. I liked exercising, just couldn't stay constant or track macros. I avoid sugar and fats, haven't drank a soda in years. Did some bodyweight here and there. Tried SL, Greysull, startbodyweight, boxing. I still look like an ugly skinnyfat c**t. The fact gyms here died during plandemic just makes it worse. Learned too late it was the ADHD. One pill later and all my consistency and focus problems got solved literally overnight, now it's just a matter of getting the work done.

you are taking stimulants...you dont have a problem that was solved, you are just taking stimulants. the way you regard it shows how dangerous it is- it isnt going to remain that way for you

its just stimulants. it didnt fix you. it doesnt do anything to help the problem

What, because they're scary and addictive as told by D.A.R.E.? Lolno. This shit is nothing compared to actually addictive substances like heroin and nicotine.
            >just solve the literal brain damage of your fricked up dopamine receptors with nature walks and dopamine detoxes, you're overstimulated! You have to be a meme stoic!
Tried it for years, didn't work. You're not really giving me any better ideas here.

SS/SL are perfectly fine for a beginner. Do them for ~6 months, get your 1/2/3/4 and move on to something else.
The hate comes from people here who did a beginner program for 3 years because they quit after 2 months and restarted 3 months later again and again.

You won't get huge from them but you will still gain some weight and a lot of strength. They're great programs even without accesories added. Beginners need a good strength base and solid form down. After they stall too many times they will have some idea of what they like and what they are trying to do and can pick another program based on that.

Out of the newbie routines I tried: GZCLP > SL > SS

Specifically, I did Phrak's variant of GZCLP which comes with the app if you use it. It does have pullups but even as a fatty that couldn't do a single pullup I substituted with negatives until I could.

SL is a perfectly fine beginner workout that fixes most of the problems you'd have with SS ie: too much lower volume, too little upper.

Once you get your 1/2/3/4 make sure you find another routine. My strength exploded once I went on to do a lot more volume with 5/3/1 BBB even though if was initially difficult to get used to/recover from.

SS or SL. The whole point is that they work as many muscles with as few lifts as is humanly possible. They build a strength base from which you can branch out to your real fitness goals.
