Of all 4 people I know who have bought the gear based adjustable dumbbells I don’t know a single person who hasn’t had them jam or get fricked up. The rod based ones are more awkward cause of limited wrist mobility but they’re pretty much foolproof

Just get spinlock dumbbells, you can get 200 lbs total (100 lbs per dumbbell) for under 300 bucks.

I have a set a lot like this, I was eventually able to find 1.25 pound plates for when progressing by five pounds was too much. Be careful to make sure it's compatible with the diameter of the handles though if you do that.
Lots of people on IST have a weird hateboner for spinlock sets and I don't understand. They're durable, they work great, they're simple and don't take up much space. The only issue is that sometimes they do get slightly loose if you're not careful in the middle of a set, but then you just finish the set and tighten them after. It's almost impossible for anything to fall off unless you let the lock spin enough to allow this.

I have adjustable bowflex dumbbells and while they're great for minimal space, they are pretty crappy compared to regular solid dumbbells. When I bench press with them or do any type of movement with some speed, they rattle like crazy as if the plates will fall off onto my face. Basically you can only do slow movements. Had had mine for over a decade and it has never fallen off tho

If you’re willing to wait the 50lb powerblock sports occasionally go on sale for $200, and you can buy expansions later that take them up to 90lbs

      Anonymous

I always look around at the other stuff, but my attention always comes back to powerblocks because of that expandability. Then I realize how expensive that shit gets, and now years later I'm still just using Olympic handles.

I have selectec dumbells and kettlebells. The kettlebells have been fine but the dumbbells have always felt flimsy and have “do not drop” written all over the base. In other words, “never improve”. I still use them because they feel more comfortable than my boomer spin locks, but after I get my legpress/hack squat station I’m definitely going to go garage surfing to try and find a rack with conventional hex designs. If you can’t safely do a push-up or bail on failure, then you have been robbed in the name of novelty. Save adjustability for bars, keep your dumbbells as a solid piece.
