People are so reactive.

People are so reactive. Everyone is always mocking gym goers and people obsessed with fitness, until something happens to them like they're dumped or bullied, and then suddenly they want to start lifting seriously too. Not that they will ever admit that's the reason why they're doing it, of course.

I'm sure this apply to IST as well. I feel like if I could look into you guys' personal memories I'd find a lot of moments of emasculation or social defeat that prompted you to start lifting, despite all the "I lift for myself" talk. I'm the only real one who is just trying to look like a videogame character.

I started lifting when I was 16 because my doctor recommended it to me after a spine injury. Not sure what you're talking about buddy.

    My beautiful son was born.
So yeah, getting more serious about my health and fitness was motivated, but sociologically I think literally all setious life changes share a goal and an inciting incident. If you're a whitecollar gay you've probably been forced to read Grit at least once by a boss or manager, and that hole Duckworth yammers on about it.

I lift to be more attractive to women.

      Thank you for being honest.

You should learn something from them, rather than feeling vulnerable when called out.

    >Everyone is always mocking gym goers and people obsessed with fitness,
I have never witnessed this in my entire life.
I'm starting to get the idea you guys create these scenarios in your head because you're addicted to anger and righteous indignation.

Its not wrong though. I think its especially common to see when its a gathering of number of people, people lean on grinning and mocking under pretense of light joking, while the same people in solo they completely flip and mire and talk of self promises that they'll never follow.

When I was a moronic obese 14 year old I felt similarly to that. But it was more so the attitude /coping compensating personality a lot of insecure dudes adopt when they start lifting that I hated. And I still do. You can lift and not be a spastic moron who thinks people are afraid of you. I still run into these morons
    >get done benching
    >gym empty except me, some girl, and some skinny dude in a black wife beater (6am)
    >wife beater keeps moving into my line of sight to curl his 35lb bar, think nothing of it at first and assume he’s taking advantage of empty gym
    >move on to dumbbell press
    >this guy moves into my line of sight again, actually look at him
    >angry face mean mugging me with scowl
    >tf lol
    >ignore him
    >start sets, nothing crazy just using 80s so it’s not even like I was doing anything that would make him feel intimidated
    >he moves again to be more in my line of sight, start wondering what this dudes deal is or if he’s about to ask for advice or something
    >literally watching me
    >waits on me to finish my set, starts fricking shadow boxing at me
    >lose it and laugh in his face like a moron
    >guy slowly down and looks genuinely sad
    >starts trying to be 10x more aggressive and grunting
    >can’t help it, start cackling at the top of my lungs all out of breath just losing my shit at this dude
    >finish my sets, send a vid of him to bro on Snapchat, can’t stop giggling to myself
    >dude is infuriated
    >never see him again

“If you knew better, you would do better”
When I was a fat frick, I used to mock my brother all the time about “are you sure you got enough protein” and all that dumb shit
I take lifting and nutrition more seriously than him now and he is always happy for me and encourages me to be better, even though I used to shit on him for the same thing
And yes, I started lifting because I got bullied a lot for being fat
The point is that there’s no reason to put people down or gatekeep based on their reason for doing what they’re doing. Just be proud of them for making better choices instead of choosing to still be a loser

    Most do it for aesthetics.

As a boomer (30yo) and a dev job my body felt stiff and my back hurted badly. Lifting is the thing that helped with that.

Almost no one can imagine in their 20s how shitty it feels like if your health actually declines. If not for aesthetics, lift for mobility and functional body functions.

I've always lifted. Since 12 years old. I just played sports in school so my dad would love me. It didn't work but whatever. I kept lifting afterwards because it turns out that a better body is better.
