Are they enough on their own to build decent abs?

They are an integral part of an ab workout routine as long as you're doing them correctly (flat back and no cheating with shoulders). I do a three-minute plank as part of my daily 10 min ab circuit and I have a visible six pack.

Unfortunately I can't post it because I have distinctive tattoos and work for the government. But I do believe that planks are the ultimate core exercise. I did an 11 minute plank once for a competition and my friends still talk about it.

I didn't say I was the best but a 10+ minute plank is commendable and will impress normies, also most on this board can't do it. How long can you plank for?

If you can do an 11 minute plank you’re doing them wrong

No. They are eventually too easy, and to get additional adaptations from them you'd have to hold them for inordinate amounts of time.

World record is over 9 and a half hours, so something to shoot for if you really like them.

That's like saying the world record for bench is 1320 lbs so your local gym bro's 4pl8 bench isn't impressive. You're an absolute moron if you think this.

Like others have asked, what's your plank record? Yeah that's what I thought.

You're on IST, dude, no matter how much you lift there will always be at least one guy who says it's unimpressive.

9 hours 10 minutes. I'm 95% of the way to the WR. LIke I said, planks are easy. But I'm nowhere near the WR for bench, which is a difficult and useful exercise.

If you don’t have any dedicated ab exercises in your plan, it’s a good starter. If you are able to hold upto 1 minute with ease, time to move on to more dynamic exercises.

    (OP)
Truly great abs require various exercises, but planks are beneficial for the entire body and will engage the Transverse Abdomonis greater than most exercises. The Transverse Abdominis compresses your internal organs, giving you a flatter belly.
Anyone that says planks are too easy is likely not doing them in good form, or it had never occurred to them that they can simply add weight to make them more challenging.

      >Anyone that says planks are too easy
Yeah I don't get this, they are harder than most ab exercises for me. I just started them and can only hold for maybe 20 seconds.

I like doing them as a corrective posture exercise, or in a superset with any type of crunch.

Just do renegade rows for same benefits + rowing/pushing strength, don't cheat the weight.
