Plant protein isn't real protein

Why is this the case? I've seen this claim spouted here and there but no one ever explains why.

From what I've seen it's usually what the raw meat advocates say to hate on the vegans.

For protein you want to look at the amino acid profile. Plant protein generally have terrible amino acid profiles and are harder to digest. Meat and dairy products generally have the best amino acid profiles which makes them complete protein.

Exception is mycoprotein which is nearly as good as meat, but rarely found since it's a weird frankenfood

        >myco
I assume this means fungus? What fungus would even have significant amount of protein in it?

          Anonymous

Yeah myco is fungi. Mushrooms are about 15% protein by mass IIRC on average across species. Can't say off the top of my head what species are best for protein content.
Mycoprotein is better than plant protein because fungi are closer to animals than plants. They consume oxygen and expire CO2 like animals, and chemically they are a lot closer to us than plants.
Adding mushrooms to your diet is obviously good, but I wouldn't expect you can get 100% of your daily protein needs from them without other nutritional deficiencies appearing from the lack of meat.
A huge amount of a mushroom is just water which makes the mushroom shrink when you cook it. 100g of mushrooms is actually quite small once the water weight is gone.
Personally I like slicing them thin and frying them in a dry pan to prevent them from going slimy. Their water content is high enough that no oil is needed on a medium heat.

Best species for protein is psylocibe cubensis. You can't find it that easily online but in some areas and probably in Canada it grows and you will see some listings. I'd say eat about 80 grams dry for a decent protein portion with a meal.

Humans have always been omnivores and have been fine with it all this time, until processed foods became ubiquitous and suddenly people started turning into fat fricks. Vegans see this and determined it's actually the animal protein causing obesity and not the shitty processed diets paired with sedentary lifestyles. If you have to take artificial supplements to get base nutrients, your diet is wrong.

    200g protein
    160g from animal sources
    40g from plant sources

    Every single day

As long as you eat a balanced diet you will get all your nutrients

Also, specifically in the case of protein, your body is able to convert unused amino acids into ones you need.

Studies can be carried out to say anything that the authors want them to and as the replication crisis has demonstrated, their basis in reality is dubious at best and they generally have no applicability to the real world. What really counts is experience.
