for most beginners, squats and deadlifts are not needed. unilateral leg exercises are better for their mobility and aesthethics, as well as general health.
you can build a great upper body only calisthenics and using weights for accessories, as long as you do calisthenics for muscles and not skills.
most lifters, especially poweifters, have bad posture.
if you train correctly from the beginning you should never get injured.

      Anonymous

So what your saying is that most beginners would gain more from cardio because they're already fat and have no muscles and you think this would help their posture as well. I'm sure that's true but I don't really see how that means they shouldn't also lift weights, do squats and deadlifts etc. If they lifted weights and also did cardio, or even just lifted weights and dieted they would achieve the same results.

        Anonymous

No bro. I think cardio would help but doing calisthenics with perfect form is a bodybuilding work out, not cardio.
Try to do 20-30 dead hang, sternum pull ups... you will grow wing-like lats and very thick upper back. there's a guy, k boges on youtube, and he shows you how you don't need to do super weird variations to become stronger and bigger for the upper body, but you need to treat them like bodybuilding movements

          Anonymous

          >calisthenics with perfect form
as someone who had to do calisthenics because I had no weights and was not paying 10$ per lb, I will say beginners are not able to do calisthenics in perfect form, and will end up injuring themselves.

you have to have some form of a base to even start and weights are FAR more forgiving with form, granted i'm not talking do a standing bench press and call it an overhead press bad form, but minor form problems don't end up near crippling you.

      >unilateral leg exercises are better for their mobility and aesthethics, as well as general health.
This is one thing that I keep insisting on, but for some reason almost everyone has a hard time accepting this. In virtually every real life activity, including those requiring significant physical strength, the lower body works in an alternating unilateral pattern. You almost never have to push with both legs at the same time, the only actual activity that comes to mind that actually demands this is jumping, and even then, it requires an explosive, fast movement, not the slow, controlled brute force strength that is required by heavy squats.

As for the deadlift, the mechanics are completely unrealistic since you can almost never place your feet right below the object you're trying to lift.

The truth is that the exaggerated emphasis on the squat and the deadlift is a relic of boomer macho culture that has no place nowadays. Most people who aren't professional athletes of any sort are better off avoiding them.

        >Most people who aren't professional athletes of any sort are better off avoiding them.
why would athletes do them if they're not worthwhile?

          Anonymous

they present advantages for their specific sport
but even then it's complicated. most wrestlers don't do mainly standard deadlifts, but variations, like trap bar deadlifts.
most olympic weightlifters don't deadlift at all

Have you ever actually done any amount of landscaping or construction with only handtools? The main way to move shit around is to lift it up and place it where it is needed, in a motion that is usually no different than deadlifting, now with extra walking. Same can be said about diggging roots of a spruce up from the ground, you cut a root from the trunk, then take a good grip and pull as hard as you can, in very deadlift like motion, and ideally the root tears from the ground. Also yes, ESL, but where do you think shit like this is done without mechanical equippement?

          Anonymous

NTA but I've done plenty of physical jobs before. The only one where deadlift+style motions were remotely useful (ie bilateral leg drive lifting) was when I was delivering sofas.
When I've worked construction, the most useful "gym" movement has been isometric bodyweight squatting to keep my body at a lowered height whilst working with hand tools.

I always bench press to failure (meaning until I fail to lift it again and have to roll under t). I don't need a spotter, just the security things on the sides to hold the bar. ''Roll of shame'' is for morons that go to cheap gyms with no safe spots on the BP station and ego lift for instagram or some other bullshit (basically betas). "Tomboys" and IST women are a complete meme in real life. Most of them look hideous because they literally look and act like men and not only that, they have more sexual mileage than the local town bike because they hang out with men 24/7.

Women, in general, are a meme and this board + most of the internet places too much importance on them. What IST really wants is a rural country girl that grew up working on the farm, driving tractors around and shit that was not coddled growing up but still has feminity in her personality and character.

The best cycle is TRT + anavar (or SARMs). No one likes the roided golem meme.

I dated a tomboy for a while. Cargo shorts, no make up, simple hairstyle, the whole thing. It’s only a good idea on paper. Without feminine aspects or virtues or whatever you want to call it, there’s just not as much attraction, especially after the first few months. I still like the memes though.

      >Women aren't that bad
Women are merciless, self-serving, and a perfect storm of inherent solipsism and acculturated narcissism. It's pointless and self-destructive to waste emotion and mental bandwidth hating them for acting in accordance with their nature, but you can, should, and *must* keep what they are in the back of your mind when dealing with them.
      >Stronglifts is the best beginner program
Stronglifts is amazing!... if you want to lift for a year, and then wonder why the only lift that has meaningfully progressed is the back squat, why you still have no chest or shoulders, and wonder why you got fatter despite going to the gym for a year.

Deadlifts WILL snap your fricking shit but mog the frick out of every other lift

I will say it until I am blue in the face as this board: if you are below 450 T levels then you cannot achieve anything greater than Brad Pitt Fight Club mode. If you're down to hang around 18-23% BF you can look big and maybe even lift big for strength, but never be decently lean and big. NTM shit will fix your whiny depression. Half this /LULZ/ tier shit would disappear if homosexuals were proper T levels.

Squats are all you need for lower body

High rep pullups are either the sign of a DYEL or someone who has made it. Do them.

Abs are made in the gym, not the kitchen. Literally every muscle is made in the kitchen, homosexual. Are you getting enough protein, sleep, etc? Then you will build any muscle you workout

Every big black dude is on PEDs. Every single one. It amazes me how people here understand how crime ridden their communities are but somehow think it is impossible they would ever lie and cheat in terms of physical performance.

The only woman that will "love you for who you are" are 40+ MILFs/cougars that have been used and thrown around so much they are desperate for a nice guy to talk to. However, you still need to give them the D properly. Or at the very least make them squirt (older women love to squirt and I honestly do not know why).

Agreed across the board, except add leg press/leg curl to lower body.

      >cardio matters way more than IST wants to admit. Cardio is huge for longevity

      >related to above: most of you lazy fricks devote way too much time for inter-set rest periods.

      >fat people hate is just sadism hiding behind a costume of good intent. It isn't an effective tool for change. When's the last time you changed your mind after someone degraded and demeaned you? (It's still funny though)

      >Despite safety issues and meme culture, Crossfit has more utility than most here want to admit. Also, competitive crossfitters would readily wipe the floor with top quartile IST posters.

      >the level of muscularity the average female finds attractive is way less than what most of IST thinks. Being lean matters more. Not being a maligned social moron matters more. Nobody cares about your numbers.

      >self-improvement fueled from a place of self-hatred is pointless. Whatever tangible goals you achieve will only further reinforce the self-hatred. If you take this as me advising against self-improvement, you're a moron beyond help.

      >red meat is best avoided. Especially cured meats.

      >Most all of you have no business touching gear.

      >self-improvement fueled from a place of self-hatred is pointless

I don't understand how these opinions are controversial. I agree with all of them.

        >I don't understand how these opinions are controversial
There are a lot of stupid and/or ignorant people on IST, there are homosexuals ITT right fricking now who see Stronglifts and GOMAD and say to themselves "this will end well."

        >Pressing movements should be done with dumbbells. Every single one. If you really want to use a barbell, use it for high rep/low weight.

        >Squats and diddlies are fun because you can slam a lot of weight but they're not actually good.

        >Almost every machine is actually good. Yes this includes the smith and the leg press.

        >FACE PULLS ARE NON-NEGOTIABLE

        >Pressing movements should be done with dumbbells
Based. I agree with this more every day. Forces symmetrical progress, you can go *HARD* every single session without need for a spotter, basically anything you can do with a barbell you can do with dumbbells, but not vice-versa. (Try to do an Arnold Press with a barbell. Go ahead. I'll wait... you *DO* do Arnold presses, don't you, homosexual?)
        >Squats and diddlies are fun because you can slam a lot of weight but they're not actually good
I wouldn't go so far as to say "not actually good" but way overrated; you don't need to do squats three times a week, you just don't. Also, Antagonistic Supersets of leg curls/leg presses will change your fricking life. Speaking of the leg press...
        >Almost every machine is actually good
Agreed with most, but the Smith machine should be avoided unless you're injured or just a woman doing the "squats, cardio, take a million selfies" routine; managing and balancing the weight is part of the lift, also your abs will thank you. This is why I do the leg press/curl thing twice a week... but still frick with squats and diddlies once a week.
        >FACE PULLS ARE NON-NEGOTIABLE
This isn't an opinion so much an objective fact.

Going past 1/2/3/4 is basically pointless and purely for vanity

I would make a case for 2/3/4/5, or at least 2/3/3/4, but if you're in the 1/2/3/4 club you're stronger than 99% of American men. Holy shit is that a depressing thing to type.

Low-fat vegan diet is the best for not only health and cardio but also for lifts.
Deadlift is stupid, learn to snatch u clumsy donkys.
Track&field is grossly underappreciated, run and then shotput and javelin for best aesthetics.
Sóy is great and everyone should eat a block of tofu a day.
VR is the best cardio to do at home.

Weight on the bar hardly matters for muscle growth besides being a tool for volume accumulation and people just chase giant numbers because the drug stacks of the 80s let people hit huge numbers with no effort. You can go on misc and see first cycle stories and they're all stupid like taking a 225lb squat 1RM to 315 for 11 in a 2-3 weeks.

I just have dozens of anecdotes, historical evidence and science that backs this up. I remember my dad used to do the pec bounce to show off when I was a kid and he literally never benched more than 185lb and he took test. Also all popular routines on the internet are powerlifting centric like PHUL, 5/3/1 BBB and even PPLs.

People just don't want to admit the people focusing on their muscle contraction and doing some pump training were right all along. They want to be the ones that have the "secret, correct way" they learned from Jim Wendler instead of just committing to the grind like everyone else.

      Anonymous

So what you mean is that people want to believe about big numbers = better results because it makes them feel better that way than to admit more modest weights can lead you to the same results if not better?

      Anonymous

In my experience, this is true. I like to say that what matters is not so much actual, objective weight, but "perceived" weight. That's why I usually find dumbbell variations of the common exercises superior for hypertrophy AND strength even though you're objectively lifting less weight.

As you said, absolute weight can be a useful tool for tracking progress, but, unless your goal is specifically to reach big numbers on specific movements, its importance is secondary.

Powerlifting is truly a curse on bodybuilding. It's a cope sport born from people who couldn't hack it as bodybuilders, and everyone deep down knows it.

If they were actually interested in weightlifting as an athletic discipline, they would have gotten into olympic weightlifting.

One-legged squat variations, advanced lunge variations and sprints are enough to obtain strong, athletic and muscular legs. No need to bounce your ass off the floor to please boomers with a man ass fetish.

It's better to do a suboptimal workout that you enjoy than to do a technically superior workout that is boring, excessively taxing or dangerous.

    > overall there needs to be a bigger focus on this board about general athleticism, not just strength training.

    > your back should be trained much more for endurance than strength. Dling 500 lbs for reps is fricking impressive, but not if you can't do yard work for longer than like a half hour without a break.

Protein powder, supplements and pre-workout are just essential oils/crystals for men. Just eat more meat, take a multi vitamen and have some coffee. Throw a pinch of salt in your water. Or at least get a protein powder that isn't loaded with sugar.

Both men and women look better with little to no body hair provided that, and especially if, they are in good physical shape.

You can definitely look good with body hair (hell, I don't even mind that tummy peach fuzz that some women have), but all else being equal, getting rid of your body hair will make you look even better. It's also more hygienic and arguably more comfortable.

Anyone who claims that removing body hair is "gay" is just insecure and easily influenced by dogma.
