Pre-diabetic...it's over

A1c last year: 5.7
This year: 5.8

(Fast blood glucose is 95)

Wtf. I quit drinking alcohol in January, lowered my sugar intake, exercised more, etc. My diet isn't great but it isn't terrible either (oatmeal for breakfast, chicken lettuce wrap for lunch, and misc meat/pasta or something for dinner). I am 6ft 145lbs. Not even fat. Wtf.

      My parents fed me pop tarts and froot loops growing up a lot, probably has to do with that.

      Forgot to mention i am pretty muscular as I have worked out for longer than you have even been able to get a boner (if you count a micropenis erection as a boner, that is).

    I’m type 1 diabetic and would do literally anything to be just prediabetic. It’s going to be hard as frick but you can reverse this. I’m not a doctor but I am happy to answer any questions you have about living with diabetes.

      Sorry to hear anon. Isn't type 1 pretty different from type 2, which I am at risk for? Do you ever get weird changes in heart rate and blood pressure and/or have issues balancing electrolytes?

        Yeah so I’ve been diabetic since 12 because I was born with a b***h made pancreas. Type 1 is a genetic disease whereas type 2 is environmental. You can definitely be at higher risk for type 2 but still not be guaranteed to develop it.

        Yes to all of those things though. Think of blood sugar as a percentage rather than in mg/ml and it makes more sense. If your blood sugar is 200 that means your blood is 20% sugar.

          This is actually not accurate, type I diabetes is an autoimmune disease with environmental/genetic components.

          Type II is a combination of genetic and environmental triggers as well, but has greater heritability estimates than Type I.

          Having 1 parent with T2DM confers a 40% lifetime risk, 2 parents brings that up to 70%. Lifestyle definitely plays a role in many cases but in the context of strong genetic influences/components of T2DM.

    Fat, especially PUFAs prevent proper glucose uptake and cause metabolic dysfunction, blood sugar issues and insulin resistance. Carbs are a good thing and not to be avoided, a diet of white rice and fruit in isolation can cure type 2 diabetes for example.

      Not really but it is a bit high. A1c is the bigger indicator here.

      It seems like this point of view is based on a few studies only and some anecdotal stories. But then again the establishment guidelines basically are too. Our knowledge of nutrition is such a fricking mess.

    Does pre diabetic mean you have to do anything, or just modify your diet and monitor? Or do they try and put you on meds? At what number do they consider it full blown diabetes

      I think full blown beetus is 6.5. So pre-diabetic is just progressing towards the disease and it can be stopped supposedly with the correct diet and exercise regimen.

    I was told I was prediabetic november last year after getting some bloodtesting done. By march I had reversed it by dropping all processed shit from my diet, and finally pulled my ass together to exercise properly. I’ve lost 34kg since then.
    But what’s your diet like? And in details. Just saying oats and chickenwraps doesn’t say much.

    Are you? Your doc should verify suspicion of emerging diabetes with a second test, usually oral glucose tolerance test. Single metric isn't enought to determine diabetes.
