Preserving hair

Let's say you're early 20s, nearly at Norwood 2 and you want to delay balding as long as possible. What would you do? What lifestyle changes would you make?

I'd earn as much money as possible and get a hair transplant. If you are too poor to afford that, then you have bigger problems than losing your hair. Get your career and life in order first.

      Anonymous

after the transplant you still need to follow the same regimen you'd have to follow for just preserving your hair. non-transplanted hair won't magically stop miniaturizing and you'll end up with a strip of hair at the front with the rest of the head bald

        Anonymous

Then get another transplant....? You have hair all over your body, even your ass hair can be used. Stop being poor

          Anonymous

yes, because ass hair grows just like scalp hair and having bald spots on the chest looks so great. bodyhair transplants are emergency option to add some density for people from the end of the Norwood scale, who are out of options and will always need to keep their shitty hair short, leaving their FUT and FUE scars visible. every single hair matters when it comes to transplants and anything above 2500 grafts (norwood 2-3) will leave the back of your head looking like a sieve, full of ridiculous bald dots, forcing you to keep your hair long, and you want to add bodyhair with very short terminal length? stop being an absolute fricking moron

That's just what hair looks like when it it's not layered together because, get this, you're taking a photo of the top of your head! There's no single gravity bias to pull it together, so barbers tend to cut crown hair short so it doesn't look tufty. This also exposes it to the sun more, which can cause its own damage if you don't realize that's happening. Just grow your hair out and take care of the skin under your hair with shit like castor oil and you'll be fine. Stressing about it will turn this non-issue into an issue, you moron. Stop noceboing yourself and listening to pharma peddlers.

I've read that Norwood 2 sometimes is caused by the natural progression of age and isn't necessarily related to male patern baldness. It could be that too right?

        Anonymous

Natural progression of age IS male pattern baldness.
The hairs at the front are the ones that are the most sensitive to dht, that's why they usually go first. For some people it stops there, for some it starts heading further north. You won't know what's going to happen to you until you actually lose the hair.

The Norwood scale isn't some exact thing. Mens hair doesn't fit into 7 neat groups like that. You can have a mature hairline with a thick head of hair behind it.

You do know that finasteride slightly increases testosterone levels and has zero effect on sperm quality, right? So how exactly is it like castrating yourself?

Happens in 2 % of cases and there's not a single medically documented case where it didn't go away within a few weeks after stopping to take the drug. So you have literally nothing to lose, worst case you belong to those 2 % and need to stop taking it.

taking dutasteride over finasteride is useless, unless you inject it into the scalp and want to take advantage of its long half-life and almost no systemic absorption. dutasteride additionally blocks 5ar type 1, which doesn't have anything to do with balding. you only increase the chances of sides (although still very rare) with no added benefit, because 5ar type 1 takes part in production of certain neurosteroids

        Anonymous

finasteride didnt stop my balding so Im on dutasteride

          Anonymous

doubt dutasteride will help either. the DHT levels in the scalp on dutasteride are only a tiny bit lower than on fin. you could try applying ifin topically to lower DHT in the scalp more effectively, or you could add a topical antiandrogen. there's a significant chance that other androgens, like test, are still miniaturizing your follicles. 5ar inhibitors cause a pretty significant spikes of testosterone in the scalp, especially dutasteride, so you can even make things worse

            Anonymous

Is there something like a topical aromatase to turn that scalp test into est to help the hair growth? Or is it progesterone or prolactin that does it? Shit's confusing yo.

              Anonymous

probably not. there's Alfatradiol, sold e.g. under the brand Pantostin, a topical estrogen that doesn't get absorbed systemically, but it isn't particularly effective and acts mostly as a weak antiandrogen, but you definitely can nuke test in the scalp by using an effective one, something like pyrilutamide, breezula, RU58841 etc. (some of them are already approved by FDA) the most cost-effective one is RU, but the clinical trials were abandoned a long time ago, probably because it's pretty unstable and needs to be stored in the freezer, and the prepared solution loses effectiveness within a few weeks

                Anonymous

Interesting. Too bad about the RU stability. Are there any ill effects of nuking your scalp test? AFAIK it doesn't nothing useful or good up there.

                Anonymous

yeah, I don't think blocking androgens in the scalp can be in any way detrimantal, but RU is still experimantal and there are some very rare anecdotes about side effects, like heart palpitations and insomnia. it's generally been shown to be very safe, though, and people have been using it since the 90s. it was about to be approved, but the company developing it was bought out and the new owner trashed the development, probably because it wasn't comercially viable due to its instability. it isn't much of a concern if you buy powder and prepare a solution yourself, or if the seller prepares the solution just before shipping.

                Anonymous

I've never heard about ru going bad on the shelf. Also most of the people get sides because they are dosing 50-100mg sometimes twice a day. You could probably get by on a lot less. Especially if sides are that apparent.

Removing DHT still is not without reprecussions. You can make the argument that it's beneficial or a useless hormone whatever. It's up to people who want to make the choice to take 5a inhibitors or not. Do you have any protocols to combat breast tenderness, ED, cognitive issues from taking 5a inhibitors? Not saying everyone experiences these sides, but totally removing or reducing dht and metabolites has side effects. You can't argue against that. You can apply it topically so you sound like a huge shill and get triggered when people don't want to take it orally. I bet you plug fin up your ass homosexual. Prostate probably huge from taking so much silicone in your butthole. homosexual.

The ideal dosage of finasteride reduces DH to a certain threshold. Total elimination of DHT is neither intended nor desirable.

      Have you tried androgenic supplements?
Ginger apparently drives cholesterol into your balls fattening them up so they can produce more test. Then there's all the other stuff like tongkat ali, horny goat weed, saw palmetto (sort of anti-androgenic but also anti-estrogenic), ashwaganda, maca, yohimbine, etc. as well as regularly good nutrition plenty of healthy fats and sunlight also nicotine is very androgenic. could be, I love ginger and eat a ton and have gotten compliments on my large testicles, though they were always pretty big even before I started eating so much ginger.

Did you try any of them?

I haven't tried any yet, other than already eating a ton of ginger. Been thinking about it, but also considering the anti-androgens for my hair. Maybe I'll just take both, jack up my test production but also block DHT conversion and just have a shit ton of free test floating around, would need an aromatase inhibitor or whatever too though so it doesn't get converted to estrogen. Shit like spearmint is supposed to block free test too though, so what happens if your body produces tons of test but can't use it or do anything with it?

this and the shampoo is a very poor application method, it needs to stay on the scalp for at least few hours for a decent absorption, so the cream is much better. not worth the hassle imo, there are much better antiandrogens, like RU, or, if you don't want to use research chemicals made by a chink in a bathtub, there are things like Pantostin (Alfatradiol), Eucapil (Fluridil), although they're less effective and mostly available in Europe

disregarding testosterone is literal troony mentality. it's the male hormone, DHT after puberty is just another androgen, produced in small amounts, more effective only at obliterating hair follicles. even huge doses of DHT were barely enough to maintain sexual function (unsurprisingly, it's an androgen) when testosterone was not present, at a significant loss of libido

                >Do you have any protocols to combat breast tenderness, ED, cognitive issues from taking 5a inhibitors? Not saying everyone experiences these sides, but totally removing or reducing dht and metabolites has side effects.
The testosterone that's no longer metabolizing to DHT instead can metabolize to estradiol, creating some of the side effects some men get.

I started getting low libido from taking fin but I then started taking DIM and Boron supplements to regulate my hormone balance of T to E and now I'm 100% again. It's actually really simple to just do some research on what food and supplements regulate estrogen and dial it in.

The fearmongering around 5ar2 inhibition is baseless.

Prostate probably huge from taking so much silicone in your butthole. homosexual.

so you were talking about DHT being what makes you male, now you move goalposts to 5ar inhibitors? literally have a nice day, you fricking mongoloid. potential "breast tenderness" has nothing to do with DHT, just increased testosterone levels, because less of it gets wasted by converting to DHT. I bet you're scared of having higher testosterone, you fricking troon.
ED mostly psychological, often the placebo groups have a higher incidence of it, and the only way it could've happen is someone being so lowtest, that lowering some residual androgen tips the scales.
cognitive issues aren't related to DHT either and neurosteroids are transfered mainly by 5ar type 1, so it's dutasteride-specific issue, not DHT.
DHT is still useless after puberty and you are a troony scared of testosterone with room-temperature IQ

it won't do shit for the actual cause of balding, which is DHT levels in the scalp and individual hair follicle sensitivity to DHT. maybe rosemary oil and microneedling (pretty much useless without minox) will have some miniscule effect, not enough to even slow down balding. I wonder what induces people, who don't know anything about a subject, to feel the need to give out useless advice online

    This is a solved problem. There is a treatment schedule based on invasiveness/cost/side effects and Norwood level etc;

Start with cleaning up your lifestyle, reducing anxiety/stress levels and balancing your hormones.

Then you can ease into microneedling/scalp massage, and possibly red light therapy if you believe in that. Virtually no side effects and might see some regrowth from collagen/stem celll stimulation.

Then there's minoxidil/Rogaine etc and this will be the next logical step to try and retain whatever hair you have left. This will not stimulate new growth unless combined with the above.

If you're sliding rapidly into higher than NW2 then get on fin or possibly dut (no experience with that). Fin is the only thing that is proven to work with minimal sides. 95% of men have minimal sides and great results.

    Hair transplant is final boss and only if you've been doing all of the above (can't emphasize microneedling/scalp massage enough). Getting a good transplant will keep you viable for another decade or so and can be done relatively cheap in Turkey/Mexico etc;

There are other things like caffeine, Azelaic acid, retinoic acid, nizoral (anti-dandruff shampoo) but these are all accessory lifts to the main treatments above.

Anything outside of the above treatments is essentially pseudoscience and anyone who doubts the efficacy is a balding coper.

Literally no one cares about this in real life and you are actively causing early balding by worrying about such things.

    >Caffeine shampoo on days when not using ketoconazole
    >0.25mg to 1mg finasteride per day or use a topical solution if you really must.
That's plenty to start with and will most likely halt further loss and possibly regrow any loss experienced already. Lifestyle changes won't do shit.

Ask for dutasteride instead, much more effective. Also topical minox comes OTC so no need to get a doc to order it. But in extreme cases oral minox is perscribed to help, just with the side effect you become a hairy gorilla all over

Increase blood flow to scalp with once per week micro needling and daily 15min scalp massage. Cheapest safest option imo

      Anonymous

balding has nothing to do with blood flow, it's only related to DHT levels and how much hair follicles are sensitive to it. microneedling also has nothing to do with blood flow. it's speculated to stimulate hair follicles by increasing collagen synthesis and growth factors, but it isn't even confirmed that all the increased hair growth isn't just caused by better minoxidil absorption due to skin damage, as all the decent studies also used minoxidil. minoxidil has nothing to do with bloodflow too, otherwise any blood pressure medication or a vasodilator would cause increased hair growth. the leading theory is that it influences IGF1 growth factor and potassium channels. stop listening to that hack Huberman, ever since he released that hairloss video, IST has been full of this bullshit.

It will completely stop hair loss, but don't expect regrowth. I used it for a couple years and didn't see much regrowth, even with dermarolling. However, scalp massages daily + eucapil have absolutely changed my crown area. The temples are lagging behind but I believe they're also getting there.

Grow it out. Brush and comb it multiple times per day. Treat the routine as a shoulder and neck stretch. Massage your temples and scalp regularly.
