Quitting BJJ

Anyone else here quit BJJ at blue belt or up? I know blue belts quitting is a meme but I just can't find a reason to keep going.

>Being 6 feet guy, I find muscles + blue belt + some striking is enough for self defence.
>i don't even leave the house much anymore and live in a first world country, will probably never need to defend myself anyways.
>Approaching 30, want to focus on my career.
>Can get a similar cardiovascular workout in 1/4 of the time it takes to go to BJJ class.
>Risks of having injuries that will frick your quality of life later on, met guys who have badly injured their backs, eyesight, etc...
>I just don't find rolling around with a bunch of sweaty adult man anymore

I just don't see the allure of it past your 20s, thinking of just lifting and doing boxing workouts at home to keep the fighting shape.

Idk bro, BJJ is probably the most useful martial art unless you're some izzy tier kickboxer. Maybe take up MT? If you don't consider yourself a "martial artist," you could prob transition to a casual boxer/wrestler type

It really is. Look at Royce Gracie in UFC 1. The level of takedown skills you really need against people who don't fight, or even those who do is pretty low.

Really grappling in general. A guy that used to wrestle in HS or a judoka can dictate the engagement far better than a striker who hasn't spent a lot of time getting put on his ass until he sprawls on the shot or wall walks back up.

wrestling and boxing are the most useful martial arts.

going to the ground in "da streetz" is bad because they could have a knife or a bottle or a friend ready to kick you in the head.

rolling around with sweaty men is good for you, having other people push you is good for excersize. if you don't want to get injured then don't act lik ea moron, 95% of injuries especially serious ones are hte person who got injured's fault. if you are careful and don't act like a spaz it almost never happens.

I do miss the camaredie and having something to do, but I was just too nice and kept playing defensive and never offense, I think I'm also moronic because I kept forgetting offense moves that'd get taught during classes.
I have 9 months of classes paid for I still haven't used, but don't feel like risking my spine again or getting caught up in the cult just to end up as some shitty time-in purple belt.

if you don't want to get injured then just roll carefully.

If you never ever want to roll with women again, give them 75% and they'll avoid you. If you go 100% you're gonna get "talked too" by some white knight brown belt and 50% isn't enough for them to get the message. The first time you give them a hardy take down and then a good, solid RNC or arm bar, they'll frick off and any other woman will see it and do the same.

i find it pretty easy to just not roll with streangth and instead pretend that i am an old man or a woman and give them a challenging yet not overwhelming roll.

Also you should be minding your ball at all times so at to not get nut shotted, although if osmeone nut shots you and isn't profusely apologetic they are a c**t.

i think that being able to roll with women is a virtuous and important skill. bjj isn't just about leraning how to "fight", it also develops your social skills, you gotta learn to cooperate and play well with others of different skill levels, how you feel with a week 125 pound woman is how a black belt competitor feels with you.

You could swap to Judo, a blue belt in BJJ is by definition enough to dominate 99% of people in the same weightclass as you on the ground, and Judo will increase your chances to get people to the ground exponentially. Slightly higher injury risk statistically tho, BJJ already has the lowest of all the martial arts.

But the real reason why you should do a martial art instead of a generic cardio workout is that martial arts are way more fun, and maybe throwing people will be more fun for you than cuddling with them.

And a lot of the focus of judo is on what is statistically the best submission in BJJ - the armbar.

JUDO seems hella kino, I would consider it because I find in BJJ they teach too many meme moves.

      >injuries
Are injuries common in BJJ? I want to join a dojo near me but I also don't want to frick up my body bros...

Very common, most of them are small but heard horror stories.

Brown belt here. Take a break if you are feeling burned out. I've been off the mats for 2 years due to my spine problems (oddly not bjj related, more because i was a fat sploid 4 channer with bad posture). But yeah I've seen people quit at black. Usually older dudes but don't waste time if its not fun anymore.

      Good luck with your back

Not op but I've been trying to find a competitive judo gym but there's none within an hour of me. One opened up near me but I can dunk most people there (because I had months of judo experience from an actual competition focused judo gym and I'm in shape lmao...and no I wasn't bigger than everyone, I was actually the second smallest lmfao). So im forced to pay $200 a month (for reference Judo places are an order of magnitude cheaper bc theyre not for profit) to go to a bjj gym with a bunch of mma guys, but it's not the same as a good judo gym. Bjj intensity is so low and very few people start on their feet.

Jeez dude don't go back dude not worth it.

As for the camaraderie I find it's kinda BS, as soon as you change gyms you won't keep in touch with those people, only thing you have in common is that you train at the same gym.

Agh that camaraderie is why I am still slugging through bjj. The classes without any women are one of the few bro-ish refuge in the world. I know I'll walk out of class with a smile on my face just rolling with the bros.

Really common in white belts and for some reason purple too.
It's really easy to injure yourself if you don't know what you're doing or if you go too hard, sparring shouldn't become a battle to the death nor should you start having a seizure when you're being submitted, take it easy and you should be fine.
Also don't compete if getting injured is a concern, people competing go hard. All in all, BJJ is safer than most grappling martial arts, but the risks are still there, even more if you're a moron, don't be a moron.

      Anonymous

Statistically the injury rate is very low, but it is inversily related with training years, so as a white and blue you are most likely to injure yourself, the more years you get in the less likely you are to accumulate new injuries.

If you're an idiot. So many people in my gym half ass the warm up, hit a bunch of static stretches and then roll like their life depends on it. Then proceed to get changed immediately, sit in their car, go home and sit on the couch. Then they wonder why they get fricked up.

Or if you get some roided out try-hards. My gym had a bunch of correctional officers and other pigs of various persuasions. Don't get me wrong, I partake of the juice as well but these guys were 100% uncontrolled E2 mode. Strains and sprains were very common when they came around and breaks weren't unheard of.

I did. School has become very demanding and between school, work, gym, and other commitments I just don't have time. I'm unwilling to compromise on the others to accomodate it. Besides, if it ever comes to the point that I need bjj at such a high level, that means that they've seperated me from my carry gun, my knife, and my striking (boxing and MT for a couple years) isn't cutting it. Like what am I fighting Ryan Hall or some shit? It's pretty much useless in all reality. I'm not rolling on the ground with anyone in a street fight for any reason, I am shooting you, stabbing you, sucker punching you, or grabbing the nearest rock or brick and caving your shit in.

I find it could be useful in self defence situations that are not life or death, holding a drunk person down while waiting for the police without harming them.
But defo in a life or death scenario I would grab the closest thing and thow it or just run.
I also have MT experience and thinking of doing double end bag and heavy bag on days I don't lift.

I am coming up to purple and considering quitting/drastically reducing training time when I get graded. I mean I only go 2-3x a week but that's 2-3 evenings I could spend with a nice woman watching sunsets, going for hikes etc. Most likely I'll quit when I find a good woman to spend my time with. I'll NEVER stop lifting though. Big biceps and shoulders are too good to not have.

That said, BJJ was a big part of turning me into an adult (or at least, closer to one). Being shit and miserable at class every time for like 6-12 months and then finally getting better and beating other guys up that used to frick you up is really rewarding. Proves to yourself you can stick with something hard. Goes to show perseverance and hard work pays off. Can make you more respected from guys in life if they know what BJJ is.

      Frick gi though, nogi only

OP, I don't think it's a bad decision at all to quit. You already achieved proficiency, it's pretty injurious, and if you don't enjoy it anymore your time would be better spent elsewhere.

Same, I will never stop lifting, even doing some sort of combat training like heavy bag and running.
Purple is a great time to quit, I feel at early blue I still suck except with agaisnt untrained people, I still have to use strength agaisnt whites. Purples have the fundamentals down and can just toy with high level whites. Past purple you are just refining everything to beat advanced players.

Nail on the head. Had some dumb mystery meat single mom spear me in my knee and put me out of bjj AND leg days and deadlifting for 3 fricking months. I unironically don't roll with women, I avoid them and tell them I don't feel comfortable doing it. Was never a problem.

Do at least one real fight before you quit if you haven't already.

Here the amateur scene is pretty serious, would have to do a MMA camp. Not willing to invest the time.

Dont feel bad about quitting OP, I quit my bjj gym because the instructor went apeshit on me and put me in a sub while being 100lbs heavier than I am.
    >be drilling
    >things are going fine but I like to ask questions about related techniques since I'm genuinely very curious about it all
    >hey coach somebody taught me x escape to this a while ago, would that work to counter this move?
    >What? Show me
    >Do it full speed since thats the only way it works and I get away
    >So yeah would that work coach?
    >Do you want to go live? Lets go live
    >uh no I just wanted to know if it would work
    >proceed to go live and he instantly catches me and puts me in a sub with the rest of his weight on my sternum
    >he stands up and starts yelling at me and threatens to kick me out over this
    >had never said before he was annoyed at me for asking questions during drilling
    >just completely spergd out and kept getting angrier at me for it and yelling to stop asking questions and second guessing him
    >we used to have long conversations on this stuff too
    >sternum was fricked up and it hurt to breathe for a month
Really soured my opinion on it all, never had that experience anywhere else and I've never had an issue with discipline, with other instructors or students. I still do judo from time to time but on the whole I've had enough of martial arts ego shit, when you start threatening my health is when I'm done.

anyone in a position of authority can act psycho and let it go to his head.

he got offended that it seemd like you were "poking holes in his techniques" because that guy was mentally ill.

in a regular class, like my class, my instructor would have just like calmly made chit chat about that counter .

    >Risks of having injuries that will frick your quality of life later on
This. I quit after three years because my knees were on their way to snap city. BJJ is not worth the trouble past a certain threshold.

I did Taikwondo and Karate to Purple/ Brown.
Quit did MMA, Talked to a Karate Trainer / Sensei he got me to do some moves.
He said "you fight at black belt level".

He said personally if I were you just buy a black belt.

To be frank I don't give a shit becasue I've been in real unsanctioned fights and won.

Hello, pistol chad here. For women like you, I highly suggest a revolver since they are easy to load and you won't have to worry about racking the slide. Also, if any enemy martial arts larpers try and get all close to you, the revolver is capable of shooting multiple times when making contact with their chronically crippled bodies. Disarming is a meme, just get a gun like most adult men do and stop rolling around on your larper ringworm mats like a nerd. Europeans need not apply.

    >all these women-related issues
    >on the mat
You dumbasses need to look for old school black belt coaches who tell women who to roll with every single time.

There's some really puss boys on this thread.
Imagine not believing someone could learn two martial arts or that 0 woman could fight.
Clearly raised in an echo chamber.

bjj is supposed to be about fun ,martial arts in general. its an ART.

if your not having fun, your either doing it wrong, or you are doing it with dick heads, its never the martial arts fault.

Just go and learn boxing it's more useful in real fights, or any real striking. It's just the internet is full of dweeb kids who watch too much UFC and have a fixation on BJJ as the ultimate fighting tool which it isn't.

If you don't have the bug and enjoy the puzzles people present for you to figure out then just leave man. It sounds like you never wanted to be there in the first place and if you don't find it fun you'll never last
