the answer is vape or zyn, you need to replace the ciggies with something less harmful that still gives you your nicotine fix. Gradually reduce potency. You will not succeed cold turkey because if you could have you already would have.

      Anonymous

I could say I quit cold turkey, but it's only been one week since I've last had any nic.

I tried Zyns, they didn't work. Then I got a 0% vape. Turns out that nicotine isn't all that addictive (at least for me). What I really craved is having something to suck on. No homo.

The nicotine gum worked well for the smokers in my family. Once you remove the rituals - the “smoke breaks”, the communal aspect of it, etc - you realize nicotine is just a low tier stimulant

No the cravings never go away but they won't be a daily occurrence. You'll just every once in a while, probably from a trigger (like watching someone else smoke or smelling cigarettes), get cravings and you just need to fight that off. It's not as bad as it is. You just need to know what triggers you to smoke. For me it's stress and depression.

I have been a smoker since the age of 15. I am 30 years old and quit a couple of months back. I thought there was no way I could do it since I've always smoked heavily (a lot of days I'd wake up and not even open my eyes before I've lit a cigarette while laying in bed)
Only missed it for the first 3-4 days and now only crave one when I'm chilling at night. The only tip I can give you is to stay busy. After work I lift, tend to my garden, do some chores around the house, cook for the next day etc. Then it's almost time for bed.

I was a 3 pack a day smoker for almost a decade, I quit by vaping and using snus. I hate people seeing me vape, so I was motivated to only use it when cravings hit hard, used snus to help with the nicotine cravings too. Just get a cheap vape, and slowly reduce the amount of nicotine you put in it, then break the physical habit.

I quitted smoking 2 months ago and going well. I have the feeling that if i start again, my lung wil explode.

You have to prepare while still being a smoker. Thats what i did
    1) Buy expensive shit as substitute (beef jerky) from the money i would spend on cigs
    2) One night while drinking i would smoke so much that i got really sick from it so i wouldnt smoke the next day and use that as no more smoking.

Its actually already that. The jump from no smoking is really easy if you start from being really sick from it. I smoked so much i couldnt smoke at all the next two days.
Also when the urge comes i either jump rope or eat carrots. After a while its easy.

The real answer is to quit while you're making a major change in your life. The hardest part about smoking is, if you're going through your usual routine, you're constantly having to fight the habit of smoking in certain situations. When your life is going through a great upheaval, that's the perfect time to quit a vice because you're constantly in new situations and won't have as strong an urge to smoke as you used to.

    t. quit cold turkey 8 years ago with this method and haven't had a cigarette since

      Anonymous

You need to cold turkey. That'll include time away from catalysts to smoking like drinking or friends that smoke or stressful work. Controlling your environment is better than controlling your willpower. See this guy
Cold turkey is basically the only way you're gonna get over the nicotine dependence. Trying to cut down or replace the nicotine isn't gonna get rid of your urge to smoke. In fact, it'll make it more difficult because you're constantly kept on the leash rather than ripping it off. You need to internalize how smoking isn't actually pleasurable.
It'll take you about two weeks until the urge disappears, first three days are the worst. Once you're past those two weeks its easier, but it'll test you every now and again when you drink, socialise with smokers, watch movies with smoking that appears cathartic, or go through tough times. However, your health will improve and be better a hundred times for quitting, rather than continuing. You aren't a badass, grizzled veteran for smoking into your later years. You are an addict, shortening your lifespan and living a lower quality life.

and for me keeping one pack of cigs in my house actually helped because it helped kill the habit of buying packs at the grocery store. Not saying you're wrong, just saying it can help if you find yourself constantly grabbing cigs at the supermarket when you're trying to quit (like I was).

Change habits. If you smoke in your car either change your car or at the very least change your driving routes. Stop hanging out with people you smoke with. Being the quitter never sticks if you keep socializing with the same crowd no matter how supportive they are, how many times have your friends given up on quite? A bunch I bet. If you smoke out on your back patio lock the door and block it. If you smoke on your front porch remove any spot for you to sit. If you smoke in your house move to a new place asap, if you can't then you need to get new furniture and paint the house differently. Smoking is great and is fixed in your mind as a comfortable thing to do with everything else you are doing. If you try to keep everything else the same your brain is going to want to smoke

when quitting drugs that you can have easy, instant access to like alcohol, nicotine, weed (if legal), etc. i think this is the way to go. putting it in front of your face constantly and still being able to say no is the only way you will succeed.
with heroin or meth though you have to remove your access, delete all your contacts, flush your stash, and go hide in a cabin in the woods or some shit.

Everyone told you since childhood how difficult it is to stop. It's not. It's easy. Since faith moves mountains, it will massively influence your attitude towards stopping. If you believe it's oh so difficult, it will be. If you believe it's easy and doable, then it will be. The more difficult part is not lighting one up at a party 6 months after you've quit.

Does smoking less do much? My end goal is to quit but I’d prefer to do it in a less stressful period of time. Will toning it down help me with breathing and chest pain in the meantime or is it not a radical enough change? Vaping isn’t an option

In my experience reducing something is harder than quitting it. Why wouldn’t you want to quit if you are going to the lengths to reduce anyways.

I honestly wasn’t having a hard time not smoking for a couple of days, but stress and depression hit again and made it harder. I’m dealing well with smoking just when i feel the need to instead of chain smoking out of habit though

i quit after ~7 years of smoking a pack a day. I got extremely drunk one weekend for 3 days straight and got sick, then I just quit cold turkey. You will taste food better, sleep better, enjoy life more. I still have a cig every now and then (3-4 a year maybe), but totally cut out of my routine.

Honestly, the hardest part is a few months after you quit when you go into a gas station and your brain is screaming at you to pay attention to the cig ads behind the register. Or when you talk to someone who's smoking. Or when you smell a cig while walking down the street.

Those demons are much harder to deal with. The justification and mental gymnastics your mind goes through are ridiculous. Just gotta stay the course

Literally just stop. Throw away any smokes you've got now, don't hang out with people who smoke, don't buy a pack, and if you do buy a pack consider it a moron tax and throw it away immediately. You'll get over the physical addiction in a week or two, it's the mental addiction that's the really hard part. You'll feel like shit for a little while but that's just the addiction talking - you didn't feel like this before you started smoking in the first place. It's all about the willpower to just stop doing it.

The reason you have trouble with smoking is the same reason you have trouble with vaping.

It's all about what's cool, right?

Nicotine is pretty addictive, but addiction is a pretty nebulous concept. Lou Reed claimed cigarettes were harder to kick than heroin, and yet, for the vast majority of nicotine's history it has been enjoyed in moderation.

It's entirely about time and context, either you will get a craving at a specific time, or in a specific context. I smoke, maybe, five cigarettes a month, and a cigar every now and then, because the context for my smoking is as a major reward that is quick and cheap, or something to do on a special occasion.

I started rolling cigs, Iv never smoked before but holy shit this stuff is the best. Il have maybe 3 at most a day. I smoke pipe tobacco with yummy flavors.

Theres is one thing Iv learned recently, it’s to stop fricking with yourself. If you enjoy smoking, just smoke. It’s one thing if it’s actually hurting you but Iv been smoking pot since I was 16, almost daily for 11 years. It’s my favorite way to relax or hang out. Smoking is just to deep in my family. We’re Arabs so they been smoking hookah and cigars all their lives. We usually die due to strokes or prostate cancer around our 60s, I’m not giving a flying frick. Lift weights, earn big money from your work, and enjoy life’s pleasures. What more do you need?

i just tapered off to lighter and lighter cigarettes. it's kind of like reverse progressie overload in a way: when you go down to a lighter one you suddenly need more cigs to get through the day for some time, but with time you get down to a baseline and can do the next step.
once i was at yellow american spirits (lightest ones i can get here) and got them down to a very low baseline of cigs per day, i just stopped when my pack ran out. I am not addicted to cigarettes anymore. I do relapse occasionally however because i haven't cut out some triggers / persons out of my life yet that make me smoke again. It's just the evening it happens on though, so i haven't bothered yet.
    So to make it short:
    >find a list of ciggie brands per nicotine
    >go down as low as possible over time
    >push cigs per day down over time
    >eventually you can quit without problems
    >then cut out triggers including people and places that make you relapse

When you fail, get back off it as soon as possible. Understand that you will more than likely fail repeatedly.
Ultimately, anon's right, there's nothing more to it than not fricking smoking.
I've been quitting again and again for years, but over the last 6 months I've been through the entire withdrawal process at least 5 times.

I'm now about to start day 5 after fricking up a week before that and as luck would have it I was able to get the rest of the week off work so I don't have to subject others to my mood swings (again) over the next few days.
One thing that I've neglected this year is acknowledging that I need to be IST to make this stick, I have the energy of a thousand suns burning within me right now...

Anyway. Don't listen to that 'the degree of addiction varies' bullshit... actually, do listen to it. Analyse it. It won't take you long to figure out how self-limiting that rhetoric is; in fact, that it's designed to keep you in the cycle of addiction. 'muh varying degrees' is rehab industry talk.
You've received all the info you need here-- just frickin' don't do it anymore. I'll extrapolate just a little further though-- not doing it is the easy part. How to do it? That's the part that will likely require repeated attempts. You can read all the advice and strategies you like but ultimately you have to figure out how to make life without ciggies incomparably better than life with them, so that no matter what happens it's just absolutely not an option to pick up.

Varenicline/chantix will stop the cravings almost entirely and can get you past the first 2 weeks of cravings, which are absolutely awful. You will still need to taper off and have significant willpower after you stop taking it though. Years later I still remember how much I love cigarettes, the cravings never stop they just get less frequent and less intense. It is worth it but it's not easy. CDC data says 55% of smokers attempt to quit but 7.5% succeed.
Also this, you will fail especially if it's your first attempt. Most people take many attempts to successfully quit. Relapse is nothing to be ashamed of as long you recognize it and get back on (or off, as it were) the horse.

I've been smoking/vaping since 12 years old, I never thought I could quit. What worked for me was gradually lowering the nicotine in my vape juice to autistic levels, like I reached 0.1mg before I switched to 0mg for like 3 days than stopped vaping all together. No cravings, ez pz. Dunno what your problem is with vaping, but it was the only method with which I managed to quit after a lot of tries. Maybe you should try it too. As an important note, I've tried this "gradually reduce nicotine" method before succeeding like 3 times and I failed each time because I was lowering it too quickly. Don't rush it, very gradually bring it own and you won't even know when you quit, you'll just forget about your vape as some point. You'll stop carrying it with you, stop craving it, etc. Learn how to mix your own juice (literally takes 2 brain cells + it's cheaper) and it'll be easy. Of course, a healthier method would be cold turkey if you can deal with it. Godspeed

for me, smoking was always tight with drinking, I never smoked at home, out for a break etc, it was very rare. And since I have a good handle on my drinking habits, decided I'd vape as a way of the sticks. Have to say I feel much better and it's been a couple months now since I bought a pack. I have a cigar now and then, but the vape keeps me satiated when I'm out drinking. I realized I don't exactly care of the cigarette, it's just a force of habit now to have this oral fixation (no homo).

Stop asking for advice on a Czechoslovakian interior decorator forum. Half of this thread, and site really, is teenagers calling other teenagers honorifics like "homosexual."

Next, get a watch. No, your ifun doesn't count. Is there a frequency with which you smoke? Every two hours? After meals? Mundane daily events that make you crave? You need to know how many and at what time. Five or so minutes of discomfort for every cigarette you'd have otherwise smoked that day. You need to know what you're up against. Then, as has been suggested, break those patterns. Jolly ranchers, seeds, gum, these can help.

Why are you quitting? Focus on this. Whatever it is Anon. Health, desirability, money. The big thing is the first three days. After that it gradually becomes more manageable. Don't compare your progress to anyone else's. The V2 calibrators saying "just stop" likely never really inhaled. If you slip up, you just restarted the clock, that's all. Don't pressure yourself, a lot of people mess up and put a deadline on it. The idea is to reduce stressors and reward your success. All of this has worked for me each of the nineteen times i've quit. JK.

TL;DR Focus on quitting many times each day, not just once and for all. The rewards with most obvious impact will be heightened taste and smell. You will savor food like you haven't since childhood. Goodluck and Godspeed.

i don't have a nicotine addiction; i go for days or weeks at a time without having any. most weeks i'll have between 1 and 4. drinking, however, is the one vice whose grip i can't seem to break. i did quit cold turkey for 3 months by sheer will, but then i decided sobriety sucks and made a conscious decision to start again (big mistake). what i learned from that is: if you replace the desire for your vice with the desire to abstain, you'll make it. it's entirely about what you want. often, you THINK you want to quit, but you don't. it feels entirely different when you genuinely want to quit versus you want to quit for some excuse of a reason like your health or people's opinions.
    reframe how you view desire
