Rippetoe is 5'8", has back pain, blames it on situps

https://startingstrength.com/article/your-gut-your-health-and-situps
>BUT, you say, look at his gut. A fat slob, obviously. Can’t be healthy. Healthy is slim. I am 5’8” and weigh 225. At 5’8”, “normal” is considered to be – incredibly enough – 125-163 pounds. Overweight is 164-196, and I am “obese” at 225. In reality, my bodyfat percentage is about 24%, and a 60-year-old guy who deadlifts 500 is an anomaly in terms of muscle mass anyway. So I’m not worried about my body composition.
later:
>But, I don’t do situps. Situps may also be counterproductive for your back; they were for mine. I used to get back “tweaks” quite frequently – the sharp pains many people get in various places in their lower backs, the kind chiropractors are famous for treating. Since I stopped doing them, my back hasn’t bothered me much, and certainly not in the crippling way it did before, when I tried to heed the advice of most chiropractors and Physical Therapists by doing both situps and back extensions
The old-age chronic backpain thing, if not from atrophy, is usually something you only see in taller people.
Ripp is strong, and 5'8"; his back should be fine.
If anything this implies heavy squatting and deadlifting isn't good for your back.
Unless you think situps really did frick up his back.

Yes anon, it's generally pretty well accepted amongst sports physios and PTs that situps are bad for your back.

Are you from 1996? Because back then, people really believed that.

        People....

what the frick are you talking about man? I literally have to cut myself off in mid-sentence to just explode.

Situps have gone from one of the main exercises people did to absolutely obliterated from the landscape and nobody ever does them now or advises them other than a bunch of contrairian homosexuals.

          2/2
However I do agree that squats and deadlifts likely fricked up his back a lot more than situps. Unless they were weighted - which I doubt they shouldn't have been that difficult for a man after years of training that they could actually cause a problem. And it's not like he's been doing them for decades and stopped a few years ago, this exercise was falling out of favour by the mid 90s, shit doesn't add up.

Heavy deadlifts and squats are great to do once in a while or while building muscle, terrible to do 2-3 times a week for decades.

I'd like to see him do situps, or at least how he used to do them.
    I bet he:
    >anchored his feet (probably with a barbell or squat cage)
    >pulls on his head
    >uses his hip flexors
    >doesn't make any effort to actually isolate and engage the abs, since
    >>muh compund better than isolation

Wow. So cool rippletoe. I'd rather be able to do planche push-ups and handstands at 60, as well as get up without complaining about tweaks but you do you

The man's made some choices and he's happily sticking to them at 60, that's pretty good on its own. I hope you and I both are as involved in fitness by 60 as he is in whatever ways we want.

No. Do not congratulate him. Not only was he a roid monkey, now he's telling other natty youth to train like he did when he was on roids. Then those same kids get fat and have 0 muscle and wonder where they went wrong. He's a true parasite on the community and has done nothing to help kids be strong or healthy.

He has done enough in demonstrating the basics of strength training.
          >compound lifts
          >caloric surplus
          >strength is not aesthetics
I insist that even wannabe aesthetic lads should do something like stronglifts for the first six months of their training.
Rippetoe is not to be taken dogmatically, but he's got some fair points and every athlete should have a foundation in strong training, even bodybuilders or dancers.
If you're past novice in strength training you can easily branch out to anything including more sophisticated methods of strength training.

So when he did situps and squats/deads, his back hurt. And now he does squats/deads, but not situps, and his back doesn't hurt. And you conclude that the squats/deads were the problem?

situps cause back pain in people with tight hip flexors. he doesn't give a shit about mobility there so that's why he cant do situps properly.
also don't forget he was naturally talented and blasted roids in his youth while continuing to lift afterward. nothing about his strength now translates to almost anyone else following his programs.

classic situps only contract hip flexors anyway, the abs are static thru most of the rom. It's a meme boomer exercice. Crunches are much better for abs but people don't do them because morons think you're failing to do a situp. ALso L sits and planks.

Does anyone here know how they came to that conclusion that sit-ups is bad? They took dead pig spines and flexed and extended thousands of times. They saw that after thousands of flex and extensions that the spines broke. This doing sit-ups is bad for your spine since you flex your spine to do a sit up.

there are a lot of much better exercises for spine health than sittups and deadlifts. if you want abs that are super strong, do hollow holds, they dont compress your vertebra or engage other unnecessary muscles

Are leg raises good? I hate situps. I'm thinking of getting a ab roller dont know if they're memes or not

Leg raises are good but they engage your hip flexors and arms (if youre hanging). So again, its engaging other muscles and will take some of the focus off your abs.

low weight high rep RDLs are very good, also bent over rows. With the RDLs you aren't looking to work your glutes, you're just bending over keeping a straight spine and engaging all those paraspinals and doing them slow.

Foundation 8 point plank is also really good for the back. Flutter / scissor kicks are also really good to do with the hollow hold position, much better than leg raises because it doesnt torque your back as much.

Furniture sliders are much better than ab rollers and much more versatile
