at first i really thought being strong was cool especially if you lift more than people who do bodybuilding routines, but i really dont want to look like these fricking bloatlords. it also doesn't even help with sports beyond a very small base of strength. the intensity and time of 5x5 fricks with your recovery, makes you lack in conditioning, less time for cardio etc. i am a fighter and i see more value in moderate 3x8-12 reps now+core/conditioning. rip's argument would probably be
    >gain 30kg to put 20kg on your squat so you're more explosive
    what a joke.

      >cool to lift more than bodybuilders
Bodybuilders don't care how much you lift

Compound movements work. I know the marine corps used to put underweight/weak recruits on a weightlifting program that was basically SS - deadlifts, squats, OHP, bench, and clean. This was back in the 70s too, so it was before SS was even published. Compound movements work, I don't know why they get shit on. It's the lack of cardio that produces bloatlords.

Do they really make different shoes for squatting and deadlifting?

Deadlift shoes are like wrestling/boxing shoes and have a flat sole

What about squatting shoes? I just lift barefoot.

Squat shoes just have an elevated heel.

the elevated heel makes depth easier to hit. on deadlifts, it could potentially pitch you forward

Why would you take fitness advice from a fat bastard?

Yes. Look up Chad Nicholls. He coached Ronnie Coleman and is currently coaching Big Ramy and he's as fat as Rip.

    >Rippetoe: D1 coaches don't deserve any credit for their athletes' strength or physical prowess. These kids are the top 0.001% of genetic freaks in the population, so even dogshit training methodology will work on them. Their strength isn't evidence of the coach's competence.
    >Also Rippetoe: Everybody, look at this one genetic freak I work with. Just him, keep looking at him. My programming methodology is so good, just look at how strong he is after working with me!

        >I've heard he has a poor standing vertical
Are you sure that not just cuz he is above 12% bf and you can be genetically strong yet lack explosiveness

        Anonymous

Ripp has called him a genetic freak many times.

Not sure if it's really about genetics or not but it takes some serious persistence to be able to handle SS programming for so long
Most people just can't keep grinding 5's week in week out without getting injured or burnt out
