An entire legion of soldiers over six feet was raised in Nero’s time, and Vegetius wrote the ideal legionary was precisely six foot tall. Just because the average person was a short grain fed person doesn’t mean there wasn’t plenty of tall people.

they were filled with flammable things and probably used wooden beams in the roof. Even so I used to wonder how they demolished colossal buildings in ancient times without complex machines. Apparently when the Romans destroyed Carthage they razed the larger buildings simply by tying up draft animals to the foundations then having them pull them down.

I do often wonder how a roman from the very beginning of the republic would react to being transported to Rome around the beginning of the empire, and how he and a early empire roman would both react to being transportet to Rome 1453.

This is correct, there’s a deviation from Roman feet and inches to modern ones of slightly under two inches. So six Roman feet is about five ten and change

    They didn’t March 20+ miles a day
    It was averaged
    Some days they did 10
    Others they did 30
Truly though it Was my Black person Marion that turned Roman soldiers in to what we know today

      Anonymous

I think it’s another Vegetius quote. In training they would work up to 20 mile road marches but in execution it could be less or more like you said if they were force marching. 20 miles was more of a training benchmark or standard.

Modern shoes were a mistake, raised heels and narrow toe boxes give you an unnatural gait and fatigue you easier.

And all of this while wearing sandals.

Despite looking like sandals those are actually hobnailed boots. The open areas are vents so your feet stay dry to prevent trench foot. Modern soldiers boots have vents as well but they are composed of a breathable material instead of just being open cuts.

I own a pair of hobnailed caligulae made by some pajeet off etsy and i cant fricking wear them cause im urbanite scum and they slip on hard surfaces. I'm pretty sure theres roman accounts of this happening back then too.

two times a day with wooden swords and shields heavier than real weapons
every 105 IQ historybro repeats this meme. That's like saying "I do all my boxing training with 3 lbs weights in my hand to make me stronger.", which reveals you know nothing since that would do nothing but throw off your timing completely when it came time to actually fight. Those 'heavy weapons' existed and were probably used once in a while like primitive weights, but that's it.
