Most adults have hernias and don't even know it. Not joking. Something like 55% of people past the age of 25 have a hernia and are completely asymptomatic

So can you fix them without surgery, or do you even need to fix them for that matter if there is no acute pain?

        Anonymous

you can absolutely fix them without surgery. find a good physiotherapist. i'm this guy

with no pain, i went from such neural tension that i couldn't bend and have my hands go down more than halfway down my shin. since the injury has healed i started strength training pretty hard as well as boxing with no injury or side efects beyond lingering muscular weakness in my left leg/glute, however this progresses like year by year-it is getting better. only thing is i get parathesia like the muscles in my calf especially the soleus will twitch and shit themselves if i'm lying down.
        [...]
mostly time, nerve flossing and increasing mobility in my hips and lower body.

surgical intervention like is neccesary sometimes but carries a lot of complications and can actually frick you up real bad. the spine is delicate.

        >with no pain
man that's amazing, congrats on the nice recovery.
        >mostly time
        how much time?

that's correct, with no pain. look it's not me but i had a great physiotherapist. i was frankly really scared because i couldn't work (was a tradesman) and couldn't support myself, couldn't fricking walk to the shops or anything you know, so my self esteem also took a big hit as i'd gone from a really self-reliant active fit guy to what felt like a cripple.

with 3 months i was back at work laying bricks, but still with weakness. after about 4 months back to boxing and running but with what in hindsight was pronounced weakness. it's gotten better year by year, injury occuring around mid 2019

Uh, you're supposed to have the hernia fixed first. Those exercises will only strengthen your back, so it hopefully don't happen again.

you don't "fix" a hernia and any doctor/PT is going to recommend you do these exact exercises first to see if the hernia subsides before even considering the remote possibility of a surgical intervention

          this

you don't "fix" a hernia and any doctor/PT is going to recommend you do these exact exercises first to see if the hernia subsides before even considering the remote possibility of a surgical intervention

As a general rule of thumb, if the hernia is bellow 10mm mark, there is a solid chance, it will subside to a point, where it will no longer be noticable for the patient, as

Most adults have hernias and don't even know it. Not joking. Something like 55% of people past the age of 25 have a hernia and are completely asymptomatic

points out, a LOT of people have it.

If it is larger than that, they might opt out to peel it via surgery. Worst case scenario, they have to replace the entire disk with a titanium one. Have fun with a year long recovery cycle then.

massive herniation at l5s1 with associated muscular weakness in left leg, was unable to perform single leg calf raise, walk properly, run, do anything really for 3 months at least, closer to 4. also bulging disc at l4. however, injury subsided with time and physiotherapy alone. back to boxing and started lifting weights also.

there is no reason why your back shouldn't heal. it's not a static thing, like everything else in your body.

            also the people saying

kek i never thought of that. i don't suppose it works like that tho. i actually still ahve problems which i'm working on with like external rotation and overall 'strength' in the left leg and hip, leading me to do a lot of stability work.

the takeaway for you guys should be YOU CAN FIX THIS, AND LIKELY WITHOUT SURGERY. get a good PT, identify the problems etc and stick at it with a timeframe of months-years.

the issue is really one of diagnosis. from experience it pays very well to be aware of what you're dealing with from a trained medical professional. the issue is diagnosis imo, especially with spine and soft tissue. from experience the opinion of untrained people, myself included, is essentially worthless. if ti's a 'israelite scam' tho i'm not gonna argue with you oh wise one

You are just a homosexual. Any good physiotherapist or physician (the kind that actually reads scientific articles instead of throwing up bullshit) will recommend squat and deadlifts + progressive overload. Kinesiophobia only leads to prolonged and increased pain. good luck permanently maintaining a weak back, that certainly will do wonders for you, just like it does for the thousands of weak people fricking their shit up with everyday tasks.

certain the physiotherapist i used during my injury reccomended BODYWEIGHT single leg rdls, and eventually very light weighted RDL's (like 5-7-10-12kg). at no point did he reccomend doing 'deadlifts or squats' and progressive overload in the manner i assume you imply, being a traditional strength training routine. but whatever man go off.

idk if that's true man lol. i went back to competing in amateur boxing, working (until i left because of the injury i sustained and a desire to not repeat it) a very hard manual labour job, running etc and then during the covid lockdowns starting to lift weights and squatting 140kg and benching 115kg at 78kg bodyweight. so while these aren't outstanding numbers,i was able to do -new- strength based tasks i wasn't doing previously.

Got sick with flu, sneezed in an akward bosition, my back and left leg locked up immediately face went pale, cold sweats. Got home somehow, laid in bed on painkillers for a week, wasnt getting better, smoking in bed, only up to piss. Got deep tissue sports massage, was able to get up again, mobility severely affected, cant bend over, get on my knees to pick stuff up off the floor. Life is get through work, get home, lay down repeat, for a year. Not excercising, because pain and afraid. Get flu again, coughing heavy, every cough feels like its gonna snap my back/left leg. Summer come, feel kinda good, almost able to life leg above my head again, confidence coming back, enjoying life. Winter comes, catch flu, back snaps, immobolized, get massage, able to walk but not much else, hurts to even sit. Am I dying, is this aids? Chiropractor said to put my leg over my knee and pull with hands, put ice after, take pills, kek. My life is very, very fricking sad boys. I want to die. What to do? An hero? Mom will be sad. It can happen but lifting almost exclusively causes lower back hernias because that's where you bend for most back-related lifts. If you did some moronic Bugenhagen neck training egolift you might manage to herniate a cervical disc.

when you get a hernia and your back starts hurting like frick, are you going to turn to your spine and shout "BUT WHERE'S THE EVIDENCE" autistically or what. I genuinely don't understand the thought process here.

I posted in some thread yesterday that most chronic pain is psychosomatic. The vast majority of people will not believe this and many sufferers will go years and years trying all sorts of surgeries, supplements, physical therapy, acupuncture, pain shots, yoga, etc. to no avail. The idea is that the pain is created by the mind, a phenomenon similar to a stress headache, in order to repress painful subconscious emotions. The vehement refusal to entertain this notion by most sufferers, even after they've tried everything and suffered for years, is exemplary of the psychological necessity for the symptoms: I have these feelings that must not be acknowledged.

          >just don't feel pain, bro
I see. I will add this along with "just don't be depressed" to my to-do list

God frick it scares me just to even think about the pain. I became like 90% almost back to normal after like three months of consistent stretching and daily walks but I still feel it lingering... I'm taking alpha lipoic acid and now I'm at like 97% but is there still hope for me to be 100% back to normal bros? I never want this to happen to me again..

My mom has a C6/C7 herniated disc. A week ago I convinced her to deadlift something around 100lbs for 5-8 reps (she considered anything over 50 too heavy) and she seemed to be okay, should she keep going? Also barbell bench press hurts her because of the shoulder extension but dumbbells are just fine, is it possible to recover from something like that?
