Science hate thread

>read that white button mushrooms are great for testosterone
>they "inhibit aromatization", or something like that, preventing T from turning into estrogens.
>see countless articles, videos and other media claiming the miraculous effects of them on T levels
>decide to look deeper into it instead of just trusting it
>find the studies those claims are based on
>Study #1: it was made on isolated cells on a petri dish (meaningless)
>Study #2: an actual study on living human beings. They fed them an EXTRACT, not just plain mushrooms.
>still no significant decrease in aromatase or estrogen levels AFTER THREE MONTHS... OF FEEDING THEM AN EXTRACT DAILY
>Study #3: made on hamster cells and live mice. Using an EXTRACT, again, not just plain mushrooms.
>Concluded it MAY have some effect on estrogen & in reducing cancer cells, (still inconclusive)
>See countless supplements including white button mushroom powder based on this weak evidence.
>See countless people on the Internet recommending them for no real reason.

And this is just one example. There are dozens of myths and overblown beliefs that people have because of studies with no real value.
Sometimes there even are extremely obvious conflicts of interest or they are biased to confirm the beliefs that institutions & society consider correct.

When did you grow out of trusting studies and just went with what works?

Those are literally the same thing. In for example the fields of nutrition and medicine, 99% of all scientific evidence is funded by the corporations that benefit from selling food or medicine. That's not even an exaggeration. Practically ALL science in these fields is biased and funded.

All of this is not a problem with science or the majority of actual scientists, but the media and businessmen. There is nothing wrong with the studies you mentioned. The blame lies with those who take those results and extrapolate or exaggerate them when they have no business doing so. The blame lies with those who use this to sell supplements. If you are even remotely scientifically literate you can see through the media lies regarding studies like the ones you mentioned. It doesn’t mean disregarding science all together you fricking idiot.

Yes, but my phrasing is crafted with intention to separate the method from the industry. The scientific method is a very good set of principles that can be used to investigate things, science is an industry that serves as a propaganda arm for corporations. Conflating the word "science" with the scientific method is a tool for deflection used by the criminals who own the science industry.

The point of view of someone with no familiarity with research. You think mainstream science is the majority of it, because your only familiarity of research is mainstream research that gets posted online. The OVERWHELMING majority of scientific researchers don't get put in the light online and mind their own business, sharing their research with other scientists that helps develop healthcare and technology. You have no idea what is happening beyond what you see in your social media algorithm.

You have to observe and measure, right? But your observations, your measurements and your story about what you have observed and measured are flawed.

Welcome to The Science. Welcome to life even, because what do all organisms have in common? They manipulate eachother's perception of reality. Camouflage, walking sticks, angler fish, snakes with spider-tails, colorful feathers...it's all deception. Human life forms are the best liars of all. You do it every day, but other people have more money and power to manipulate perception of reality on a bigger scale than you. That's why you hate them.

Not really. 90% of stuff advertised as scientific truth is always misleading in some way.
If anything, the reason why I learned so much stuff over the years is because I do NOT trust them.

Other famous myths peddled as scientific truth:
      >vitamin A toxicity from eating liver (hoax)
      >fluoride is good for your teeth
      >eating too many eggs will make your heart explode (doctors actually believe this)
      >red meat will give you cancer (doctors actually believe this)
      >"lactose intolerance" (it's a myth, the real cause is pasteurization)
      etc. etc.

The list is much longer, and it's incredible how much bullshit is in the head of the average person because of these quacks.

Aajonus Vonderplanitz talked about it in detail in his books. The Weston Price Foundation also has articles with sources about it. Raw milk is easily digestible because it preserves the enzymes that facilitate digestion. Specifically, lactase.
Pasteurization completely destroys lactase and cauterizes most of the minerals and vitamins, making them unusable. The body doesn't know what to do with the calcium from pasteurized milk and stores it in your muscles.
To try to digest it, your body has to produce lots of enzymes of its own, which require a lot of resources and cause your digestion to be "heavy" and difficult, resulting in gastrointestinal issues (gas, diarrhea, etc).

The European countries with the most "lactose intolerance" are actually the countries where most of the milk consumed is UHT (Ultra High Temperature treated).
In short, 99% of the time, it's not the genetics of the population, but that they're not drinking real milk, but rather a product that's been destroyed with temperature and made less digestible.

It's not like I just "trust the science" or some bullshit studies but I still try new products or unconventional ways to train. Assuming it's safe, there is nothing wrong with that, you just have to have realistic expectations. If you already know what works, what do you have to lose? You only lose when you get tricked into believing in something that doesn't work while being ignorant of what actually works.
