Six Reps 243 Pounds Bodyweight Pullups

I said I would upload the video, and I delivered.

For the first four reps, I was bringing my chin above the bar. Obviously, I can't directly see the position of my chin, but I could tell my eyes were way above the bar. The angle makes this difficult to see. The footage was taken from an angle much lower than somebody recording it would've taken.

So, do you guys think this is impressive? I also typically do eight rep sets of shrugs with 225 towards the end of my back and bicep workouts, but if you guys really want to see, I could load up the bar right now to show you.

225 and can do 16, took a while though. And it really goes down if bodyweight goes up

      I weigh 165 and can do 6 with 90lbs on, so 255, plenty with a pl8, 210.

I do my shrugs with 405-455 normally.

What is considered a half-rep? I was bringing my chin above the bar. I just tried going as high as I can after reading your post, and I was able to do a couple reps with bringing my entire head without tilting it and most of my neck above the bar.

I promise you it's the angle of the video. My head is a bit away from the bar. I don't bring my head right up to it. If I had someone else recording for me, it would've looked better. I realized the video looked like shit after I watched it. First person view would be the best, but I can't just put my phone between my eyes.

people intuitively understand spatial geometry and can adjust for the angle and understand where you're at. unless you're fat ass is warping the room's spacetime you're not getting as high as you think

Dude even if you recorded this video by putting the phone below you parallel on the ground we could see if the chin went up the bar, because when you do a full rep you can touch the bar with the bottom or your chin if you lower yourself slowly.

You are at a terrible level of fitness, there is no shame in that, expecially because you are trying to better yourself. So please, stop being so obtuse and accept the criticism.

The chin isn't above the bar if you can't hold it there for a second. Not that you have to, but your reps look shit, you were trying to push it up with momentum + leg movement.

It's a lot better than a vast majority of people are able to do, especially at 243 pounds.
However, I think you should focus less on number of reps and more on form. You should do a full range of motion, so drop all the way down, fully extend your arms at the bottom of the movement, then slowly pull yourself up with a controlled, linear movement. You may only be able to do ~20% of your current reps, but you will build much more strength this way.
Still, what you're doing is 9999999x better than doing nothing at all.

Go up to your friends who don’t work out and ask them to do a pull up. Even if they’re young and of reasonable weight by American standards it’s unlikely they can do more than maybe one with bad form.

Why would you judge proficiency in pullups by people who don't even do pull-ups? If someone said you were bad at guitar would you say you're not because your friends who don't play guitar cant play a chord?

checked, my post said "It's a lot better than a vast majority of people are able to do", which includes people who don't work out, people who don't have arms, people who are proficient at pullups, and even people who can't read

What would you say about my form in this old video where I likely weighed around 340? I was eventually able to do 315 for six reps and would do 355 for single rep sets regularly for each workout before deciding to lose some weight. Back then, I was able to do a single pullup the way you see me do the first few reps in the video I posted.

your arm into hand should be straight, your wrist bending back causes you to use more stabalisers in the forearms, it weakens your overall strength. Look up correct hand position and you can help yourself

          Anonymous

I just watched this video, and my hand position looks pretty much identical to the ones in these two videos. I can't really see a difference.

It's the opposite these websites use user submitted data where the most popular lifts like bench, dead and squat have a heavy beginner bias so they tend to oversell how advanced someone's lift it.

              Anonymous

Saying that a 355 bench press for someone who weights 340 puts him in the novice class is moronic. You're a well established lifter if you're lifting that much, regardless of your height.

Lamar Grant benched 352 at 132lbs and pulled over 600.

              Anonymous

It looks like he has exceptionally long arms. Did he have some sort of developmental disorder where the rest of his body stopped growing but his arms didn't? He has the arms of a 7-footer. Of course his bench would've been so high.

                Anonymous

Having long arms is a disadvantage
in the bench press, what are you talking about?

                Anonymous

Tall men tend to perform better at bench press. He had really long arms like a tall man. His arms had more room to put on muscle. You could view the muscle in his arms as not having to struggle as much to gain more.

                Anonymous

                >His arms had more room to put on muscle. You could view the muscle in his arms as not having to struggle as much to gain more.
                I can't tell if you're baiting.

                Anonymous

He had unusually long arms, even though he was so short. I can't see any other reason as to why he'd have such an impressive bunch other than his arms were so long, and allowed him to pack on more muscle.

                Anonymous

Long arms make bench harder and deads easier. Grant was a freak of nature built for deads with his long ass arms but was still benching 350 at 133lbs. Total freak. He has bad scoliosis and couldn't into sports and he decided he'd train his way healthy and became an absolute monster on weight to power ratio.

                But provided

                I weigh 165 and can do 6 with 90lbs on, so 255, plenty with a pl8, 210.

I do my shrugs with 405-455 normally.

isn't bait, people like this definitely exist and it is humbling. I once had a small guy ask to know when I was done with a rack I was doing rack pulls on, and he came over and told me I didn't need to worry about taking the plates off. He began to pull and shrug my weight rapid fire, without straps, and then started adding plates. I'm fairly big and have decent lifts and this guy looked like he had just done babies' first begginer gains and used to mog the entire gym when he came in.

It's also a fact that weight to power is higher for smaller people. Anyone with a 3x bodyweight dead is a beast, but 150lb guys deading 450 in powerlifting isn't that wild in that niche at all, while Thor and Eddie never had close to 3x bodyweight deads at their peak weights (which would be like 1,300lbs).

I would gladly never bench over 1 plate for the rest of my life in exchange for never getting as fat as you. Thanks Anon, I was kind of sad about losing strength during my cut, but you definitely proved that chasing strength is not the way.

I didn't get fat through permabulking. Believe it or not, I had an OCD habit of drinking tons of kefir at night. I used to keep a cooler next to my bed and chug down tons of kefir whenever I'd wake up in the middle of the night. I quickly stopped this habit when I began losing weight in 2020.

You're rushing into the reps without tightening your lats and bracing which is why your second rep has such a shaky barpath.

I would gladly never bench over 1 plate for the rest of my life in exchange for never getting as fat as you. Thanks Anon, I was kind of sad about losing strength during my cut, but you definitely proved that chasing strength is not the way.

You don't have be anywhere this fat to bench 315 for a double. a good powerlifter around his weight would be at least putting up 440 and much more if they were enhanced

          Anonymous

You don't have to be big to bench 315. The 155lb weight class record is like 500lbs.

keep your legs motionless from now also imagine pulling your elbows behind your back while bringing your chest to the bar. This will get you engaging the back. You want to be rowing your own weight upwards.

You're strong as hell and could already kick my ass (and I've been lifting for years).

I think you should switch to an assisted pullup machine first though (if you can). Try getting yourself a little higher over the bar, lower yourself back down and make it take 3 seconds, go all the way down into a dead hang, then go for your next rep.

It'll be way harder, but the time-under-tension and full ROM will bring you faster results.

Btw, good on you for posting man, that takes serious balls.

Thank you for the kind support, anon. I no longer have a gym membership, though. I'll just practice on improving my form. I have a pullup assist band that I use to warm up, and I'll start using that for regular sets.

How about you just focus on diet and cardio until you’ve lost 50 pounds. With those breasts and that haircut, you look like a troony

        Anonymous

Ya, use the band and try to get between 8-12 reps per set. Keep doing sets until you can't get 8 anymore. So, if on your 4th set you can only do 5 reps, then you know you're done.

lmao i fricking knew it. quarter reps and kipping. also 6 pullups at 243lbs is not impressive. idk how you saw yourself in this clip and thought to upload it

  24. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

It’s pretty good. However, at 6’1” 210 lb bodyweight I can do 6 deadhang chin ups in a row with 55 lb added.

I’m assuming weighted chin ups are worth more than chin ups with high bodyweight because high bodyweight means more muscle.

  32. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

Oh, forgot to add OP. If you can, get a taller pullup bar or put it on something. You'll want to do pullups with your legs hanging straight down. It'll reduce the momentum you'll be using in your legs.

      Anonymous

Good to know, but I can't really raise my pullup bar. I have it as high as it can go. I tried pulling up from the upper bar that you can see in the video, and its too awkward. I'll just stick with assisted pullups for now until I can get my reps up.

        Anonymous

He's talking shit which is to be expect from a weeb. Your pullup height is fine. Put your legs together out in front of you almost in an L shape and squeeze your quads and glutes as you go, but keep them completely still. The only motion should be in your upper body, as others have said pinch your shoulderblades together downwards and focus on bringing your chest towards the bar (not actual contact) rather than worrying about your chin.

Your form needs a lot of work but it's completely within your reach and props for actually posting. Focus on form above reps. Good luck YGMI

      Anonymous

it won't reduce movement by much it will just give you additional core gains. if you don't kick you won't gain momentum

  33. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

People have probably already told you everything you're doing wrong, but seriously just look up a video on YouTube. Seeing yourself akwardly and rapidly jerk yourself around not even going above the bar should have already been an indicator that you're doing something wrong. Slower controlled movements will always be better than whatever you're doing.

      Anonymous

I didn't know my form wasn't correct for a full pullup. I corrected myself shortly after beginning my workout, and discovered that I could do two full reps before failure where I pull my entire head above the bar.

  39. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

I mean, you're still fat as frick and you look disgusting.

But yeah, that's pretty impressive. It's like someone of a normal weight doing 2pl8 weighted pull-ups, not quite but pretty close. At least your lats are strong as frick.

I can't do that many and I only have to lift 2/3 the weight.

      Anonymous

      >It's like someone of a normal weight doing 2pl8 weighted pull-ups
not a fair comparison. even if the total weight is the same the slimmer person is more impressive because it's way harder to gain lean muscle and if the fatty decided to cut he'd be way weaker than the slim person

I'm actually lifting in the hopes of looking better so that I can get with some hot women. I lost 120 pounds in 2020, and I've been lifting since 2013. I used to be able to bench 355 before losing weight.

Kek dude I think you have potential but right now you'd probably get a much better lat workout from lat pulldown or assisted pull-ups. Prioritize losing weight ASAP.

You can get a big rubber band on Amazon to do assisted pull-ups, if you don't have a gym membership.

          Anonymous

Good advice, in 6 months time listen to that anon op.

Your pull ups were shit. Just one real pull up would have been more impressive. But at least your working at it. You don't need those weight plates in the background yet, your body is one massive weight. Calorie deficit, full body callisthenics every other day and walking on off days. 6 months from now you will look a different person. Fatties like you can look drastically better in just 6 months with simple basic shit like that.

IDK man, I have extremely good weighted pull up numbers and not much of a taper. Ring work, levers, and weighted windshield wipers, plus being into deads for too long gave me a stupid Greek statue fridge core. It sort of depends on your build too. Can't taper with wide hips.
