      This. I lifted for two years and just ate a lot and it was getting out of hand. I didn’t gain a shit load of weight maybe 15 lbs but despite gaining muscle I just looked worse because I also gained fat on a skinny fat-fat body.

      Two weeks ago I got very serious about my diet and I’ve lost 5 lbs already. I’ve reprogrammed my view of food and I haven’t had anything shitty since then nor do I crave it. Lots of veggies, some fruit, protein, complex carbs like lentils. No garbage. I feel like the weight is just going to come off from this.

      If you want to be a power lifter or you’re 17 then yeah GOMAD and all that. Otherwise if you’re starting at skinnyfat/fat you should ignore the “you’re not eating enough” nonsense.

    Recomping will take longer but in my opinion it's easier (just eat the same way you already do but lift as well) and will get you to an overall larger/more muscular physique than cutting down first and then slow bulking back up

    Additionally you'll have a way easier time building strength and muscle on maintenance calories rather than trying to cut and build strength at the same time

    It really depends on your goals and timeline

    Standard fit advice is cut first. This will get you to normal human the most quickly. If you eat at maintenance and lift it will be easier to lift and assuming you lift well you will get normal in 18 months to 2 years but generally people don’t know how to eat at maintenance or lift so the recommendation is cut

          I get wanting to do a LP till strength gains stop (or you reach 1/2/3/4), but which one is sustainable for that? Without having lacking arms etc
          To me, it sounds logical to try to max out linear strength gains before switching to a BB routine, say.

            My routine at the time didn't look like a linear routine in the least. I remember having two exercises per body part so it was
            >2 lifts for the chest
            >2 lifts for the shoulders
            >2 lifts for the legs
            >2 lifts for the arms
            >2 lifts for the back
            only using dumbbells because that's the only thing I had access to and didn't know anything about programming. I remember the average session would last around 2 hours. It worked for me but there are obviously better alternatives. A full body routine 3 days a week is effective and simple enough for beginners to follow, and I suggest it is a body building routine. Your 1/2/3/4 physique from a bodybuilding routine looks VERY different from a 1/2/3/4 physique from a powerlifting routine.
            As foreign as it may sound to some, you'll still get plenty of strength gains from a bodybuilding routine

              sounds good, but a beginner can't really deal with John Meadows' RIR system, because they don't know what failure feels like.
              There should be a routine that has a weight progression build in, but idk if and what does exist in that regard (I'm currently doing fullbody 3x/week linear, about to hop on 531 for more volume)

      I'm similar to left pic. 5'10 180lbs. Most of my protein comes from peanut butter, milk, and whatever mom makes :), but I think it usually only adds up to 40-50 grams. Would you recommend getting the rest from protein powder or would something else be better?

        I've never had protein powder but I can recommend it since it is the most tried and true supplement. If you do get protein powder make sure it's whey and unflavored, the less added shit and sweeteners the better. Peanut butter is too calorie dense for it's protein content so don't rely on it too much. I assume you live with your parents and you're not in control of your cooked meals. If your financial situation allows it you can ask your mum to cook alongside her, and learn to oven cook, boil or grill chicken and beef. Some milk and boiled eggs in the morning, a meat dish mid-day, yoghurt and fruits in the afternoon and cheese and milk before bed and you can easily reach 100g of protein

          Thanks for the advice. I know how to make eggs. I can learn how to cook more if need be, but which way of preparing meat is best for getting out of skinny-fat? I assume boiling because it just uses water. Same with eggs. I'll also look into the unflavored whey. I've already cut out a lot of unhealthy foods and started getting more exercise.

            Don't know what you know but make sure to learn of a few ways to prepare them. Omelette, soft boiled, hard boiled, sunny side up, scrambled. The taste don't differ much but it'll help you not get bored of them after a while. Try for two soft boiled eggs with a slice of toasted bread and a glass of milk for breakfast.

            The one which will get you to stick on your diet. Boiled chicken breast is ass and everybody who sticks to it has nerves of steel. Obviously don't go basting a fatty steak with butter but oven baked or grilled are your best friends for taste to calorie balance. My advice is to learn to marinate and prepare meats so you get the most out of them. It won't make chicken breast juicy but it'll make it tasty. Squeeze a lemon and mix it with 2 tablespoons of mustard and a tablespoon of olive oil. Let the meat marinade for anywhere between 30 minutes to a day (refrigerated). Then season with salt and pepper (and garlic powder) and grill it on a pan or throw it in the oven. Chicken breast and lean ground beef are your best friends

              Makes sense. So boiling is ideal because it maximizes health at the expense of taste, but the other methods you listed are acceptable because the few calories added make the diet easier to be consistent.

              I already make my eggs hard boiled or sunny side up but I don't eat them very often so I'll start making them more, and I'll try the chicken breast/lean beef too.

        Then build the meal around the animal. It's no longer pasta with meat, it's meat with pasta.
        Then change to leaner meats. More specific meats. More specialised meats.
        Slow and steady wins the race. Simple, achievable, repeatable short term goals.
        Get used to them, and make them more complex. Get used to them, and make them more complex.
        You are not your mother. You have different dietary needs to what your mother has. She cooks what she wants to eat. You have to cook what you need to eat.
        Protein powder is a supplement to a protein-rich diet. Even the best formulas can't match good quality meat when it comes to vitamins and micronutrients.
        Start off with the real deal. You need 1 gram protein per pound of your lean bodyweight per day (do the US Navy BMI test online, it's not perfect but it's the best you can do without an in-person sports physician). Get that meat into you lad.

        You don't have to reach 1/2/3/4 while cutting. Just cut until your abs are visible, then slowly up your caloric intake. You will reach those numbers eventually, but your first goal should be to actually get rid of the fat
