Smartwatches & Wearable Technology

What smartwatch does IST use?

I'm considering buying either one of the Samsung ones or the Garmin ones. Both have nice features that don't require a monthly subscription service to fitbit like the fitbit and Google watches do.

I would also benefit a lot from the NFC payments as I'm a capital city burgher.

Does IST recommend any other brands to look out for other than Samsung and Garmin?

I've got a suunto ambit3 peak which is pretty good, only downside is the heart rate monitor is a chest strap and mine stopped working ages ago.

If I had the money, I'd buy a garmin tactix, but a garmin fenix apparently is pretty good.

I was given the Instinct 2 as a gift and I love it, but it's kind of a meme. I mostly like it for the HR monitoring, sleep score, and notifications, but I don't think I would have actually purchased one for the price they usually go for. I very much enjoy the fact that it isn't an LCD screen though , and it really does go for around a month on a single charge.

Fellow instinct owner here. I've found it hugely useful for timers, GPS tracking (don't get lost in a woods), the battery life is insane (lasts a whole month) and its tough enough to beat up. The fact its not touch

The only benefit of samsung watch+phone is two unuseful dumb frick things, which are electrocardiogram and blood pressure. Dont get me wrong, blood pressure checker is a cool thing, but you need to recalibrate it every month with an actual blood pressure monitor, which defeats the purpose. I have a watch 4 and i love it, but some days it goes crazy while on workout mode, i dont know if my unity is fricked up or its a general thing. Im keeping it anyways for stylemaxxing as i have the classic edition with the official hybrid leather band

Which samsung watch checks blood pressure?

          Anonymous

Watch 4 and 5. It uses a sepparate app for it, which is why you have to get a samsung phone. Its a manual check, not an automatic one. I think i rememver reading that you no longer need a samsung phone for that. Watch 4 also measures blood oxygen, body comp and vo2 max in some workout modes like walking and running. Its a pretty based watch and its app is based too. It also leaves 5gb free space for you to put music in it and connect your earbuds. I have the 4G 46mm classic version, it has saved my ass a few times when my phone company fricked up my phone sim and i was able to get calls and messages on my watch

Not a smart watch, these things are almost all ugly as shit.

In terms of real watches, you should probably ask IST but it depends on what you usually wear. Typical recommendations for decent budget watches that look better than their price would suggest include a Casio Duro for something sporty (like $60 quartz movement dive watch, ditch the cheap plastic strap and slap an aftermarket silicone strap on it for going in the pool or a leather one for the office) or the Orient Bambino for something dressy (like $160 automatic movement). Both are excellent for what they are at their price point.

smart watches are horrible and make you look like a child

Get yourself a black leather band orient and a brown leather band tissot or a similar brand. Match the band to your outfit (brown with brown leather shoes/belt and so on for black)

Will cost you way under $500 for both and will cover 99% of occasions and daily wear. Tissot for casual/work (assuming you have an adult job) and orient for more formal occasions.

Don't over complicate it and make high ROI choices. 90% of dressing well without being a IST autistic c**t is nice shoes, clothes that fit and being in good shape.

I work in a hospital so I can just use the real monitors for that.

contactless payments without having to fumble in your pockets is pretty good, especially if you're carrying bags from the gym or after shopping with the wife

I guess I don't buy that much because that sounds worthless.

          Anonymous

I mean you don't get to take the hospital home with you. Go ahead take an ecg reading in the shitter then, or on your own couch, or on the way back home from the gym. Or better yet just attach your hospital equipment to you while you're sleeping and have it tell you that you snores 1 hour 44 minutes and your o2 level didn't dip below 88% the whole night then lol!

            Anonymous

I guess I just don't see the point in knowing all that information at all times. Like if your O2 is low, do you sit down and rest because the watch told you it's low? Or because you feel tired?

              Anonymous

There really isn't a need to know at all times. Most of the time I just use it as a nice watch. About everything on it during the waking hours is manual so it's not telling me everything at all times, at night it continuously monitors light/rem/deep sleep and o2 levels, if you want to sleep next to the phone it does a seamless integration in the app to record and time snoring as well.

                Anonymous

Also no, it won't even take a measurement if I'm moving it complains at me and tells me to stop moving or put an elbow in the table or fist in my chest or something. It doesn't tell me my o2 level unless I tell it i want it to take the reading while I'm awake.

How’s your phone measure your swim pace , and heart rate when running?

      Fricking moron

        Anonymous

I have a Garmin Instinct and sometimes it'll tell me my heart rate is 72 BPM when I've been running at high pace for 4+ minutes. Basically useless for lifting weights because any wrist movement will throw it off by 50 BPM, too.

Also, swimming barely works because water gets between the sensor and your wrist. And if it's on too tight, it also won't get an accurate reading because of the light distortion. So you'll get swim pace and distance but forget everything else.

Watches are an OK reference point but that's it. I mostly like it for the step counter and the number of runs counter for snowboarding.

Having HR available at any time is useful, handy for rooning in zones and when I'm all wrapped up for winter walks with my phone playing podcasts or music in an inner pocket, being able to control the audio via the watch is really handy. So much so I've just ordered a Venu (the round one, none of that square garbage) so I can have oxygen and breathing exercises. Might even try yoga with it. Definitely not a meme as it helped me with motivation when I started rooning.

I got 2 fitbit inspires for my wife and I at christmas. She's slightly overweight but crazy competitive so I just frick with her about steps/heart minutes/miles etc and it's really motivated her to do better. I think having a visible metric to show you exactly how little or much you're doing can be a great motivator for some. The fitbit inspire was dirt cheap and lets you step into smart watch territory without investing an arm and a leg. That being said I've heard a lot of good things about Garmin, the accuracy of their metrics appears to be some of the best judging from user reviews. Fitbit's come with 1 year of their premium service though which is honestly really nice to have. If you haven't had one before my recommendation is starting cheap just in case it doesn't add anything to your life.

samsung's os is way less clunky than apples because it doesn't come with all the fricking bloat ware that apple does and the phones/devices that do the bloat is easily removed freeing up valuable space on the devices drive where you cannot do this to apple without risking bricking the device and voiding your warranty. Apple is electronics for little babies who have never had to do anything to a computer/phone/tablet in their life they just pay to have it fixed which costs an arm and a fricking leg. >Samsung OS
theres why im calling you moronic. Samsung doesnt build the OS, but the customization of the UI. Tizen is just android in disguise. if you buy low tier phones and watches it doesnt matter if its samsung or apple or xiaomi or your mom, its shit. thats why you have to buy mid-high tier of everything. you could say as all macgay say that apple invented the wheel but it doesnt make it a better product. for example, apple added cardio recovery just recently but samsung and even xiaomi had it for 4+ years. apple went balls deep in crash detection and body temp monitor and people is complaining they are shit. samsung implemented body comp analysis two or three years ago in watch 4 and the best apple could do this year was a overprices piece of shit for "submarinism". yea, im sure fat morons and kids go to swin in the deeps of their sea everyday, its totally worth paying 1200 for a outdated out of the box watch. i could rant for hours on why apple is a shitty company, but you wont understand shit and you will keep sucking steve blowjobs cold dead dick and buying every single overpriced piece of shit they release to the public and call it a work of art.

Bro's is there a huge difference between an expensive fitness/smartwatch and a cheap one?

I have a Xiaomi MiWatch Lite. It's a cheap chink tier watch. costs around 50-60 euros.
was wondering if there's any reason to buy a 300-400 euro watch. Is it just brand or there's something to it

      >is there a huge difference between an expensive fitness/smartwatch and a cheap one
      >if there's any reason to buy a 300-400 euro watch. Is it just brand or there's something to it
      depends on your usage
e.g. garmins usually have superb fitness / outdoor features
but you'll only miss those if you actually NEED them
like being on a 10day hike with no power / small solar and constantly having gps + maps is essential
a 700€ Garmin Fenix / epix is probably the only device existing in this form factor capable of this

Do you need such a watch for tracking your heartrate, steps and sleep?
      Absolutely not!
A <100€ watch is fine for this too

You want more advanced workout / tracking options? Maybe more battery life and gps?
well you're probably already in the 300-400€ range

You need a watch replacing multiple devices? Like handheld GPS with maps, diving computer, smartwatch, running tracker etc. and track all your workouts / vacations like hiking, surfing, skiing, MTB, gym etc.
Yeah you're looking at 600€+, but this is replacing multiple devices costing more in total and even doing a better job than most plus having a bunch of additional features

Fenix 6 pro sapphire or whatever the frick owner here
        it's based as frick
it won't substitute for an actual heart rate monitor like the HRM, when i'm cycling, the watch will read 104 heart rate, while my actual heart rate is 140s-150s
that aside, it's not ugly and it has more features than you can ever use.
the golf feature is actually pretty excellent, even better if you get garmin's launch monitor

Any watches where you can set a 30-45 minute window where you want to wake up and it will wake you up between rem?

I got a samshit for cheap. You can go on the pajeet xda forums and install the workaround to get ecg/bp working on any phone. Guess its kind of worth it to own one.

I wear this watch to time my rest between sets AND my miles. If you need more then you are a brainlet.

Casio 5600. Tells you the time. Stopwatch function tells you how long you've been running, so you know when to turn around and come home. Battery lasts forever. Has no junk stats and you learn to listen to your body when exercising.

I've been wearing a Garmin Venu 2 for around a year or so, I like that it connects to my C2 rower, and I've gotten used to checking my wrist for time/weather/notifications instead of pulling out my phone. Recently got a decent bonus at my job, and have been debating on whether I should get the really nice garmin watch, or go with a traditional mechanical watch and a fitbit for health tracking.

    Is fit really this moronic?

I've been using a vivoactive2 since Dec 2019 and it's still going pretty good. The battery might be getting a little worse but nothing crazy. It's pretty sweet and I've found that the data makes for awesome motivation. Garmin shit other than the Fenix and Epix comes on half price all the time too so it's a good buy.
I got Garmin scales about 6 months ago and they've been helpful tracking weight too, and again I love the data.

Once I have a job again I'm upgrading to the Epix. My Mrs got the Fenix mid last year too and it's pretty mad.

I hate the garmin scale, have to weigh twice every day to get an accurate weight (first one is +4 lbs)

Should just have to keep it consistent. I always weigh myself naked, before exercise (so I don't have sweat loss) and most of the time take a shit first. Seems pretty reliable to me.

Yep, you definitely beat the glowies, anon. Lmfao.

That really means nothing lol. You have to go no phone 100% if you want to prevent tracking. Feds can literally be on you in minutes if they want to.

Ageing but seemingly indestructible Polar M400 HRM plus H7 pod (chest strap). Will probably get one of the more recent "smart" ones when it eventually dies (or because I feel like it) - probably a Pacer Pro and I might update to an H10 pod as well.

I hear that Polar can be a bit picky about what external sensors / gym systems they connect to but their HRM pods seem to be top of the pile unsurprisingly, given that it's their invention...

All this tech is only helpful for training if used intelligently and not absolutely necessary (first used an HRM early 90s).

I've got the Fenix S6 Pro. 9 days battery life, or 9 hours of GPS activity tracking. In practise I usually charge it once a week.
My favourite feature is the calorie burn estimate. I know it isn't 100% accurate, but it doesn't need to be, what's important is that it seems to accurately record the magnitude shifts - on days where I really bust my ass and it tells me I've burned around 3500kcal (BMR + active calories) I know I can afford to eat that extra meal + snacks, on less active days I monitor my macros a bit more carefully. Using the calorie tracker as a base for my eating, I'm able to gain weight and cut weight successfully, so it must be accurate "enough" to work.
Phone app that it pairs with is slick too.

Ex miband user, its cheap but its some sort of halfass product when compared to garmin. Fenix 6 series is now on sales so buy that.

Used to run a Suunto Ambit 3 Peak, finally got into the modern age and switched to a Garmin Fenix 7X.

Thing is packed with features, battery life with all the features running is still pretty long, loving all the physiological insights it is able to give you from having good wrist based heart rate data.

Would definitely recommend it, either that or you could check out the Forerunner range, I hear the 9xx series is decent too. Sports watches have come a long way in the last ~8 years, little bit on the pricey side, but probably in line with modern wearable tech these days.

I have the Garmin vivoactive 4. does everything i need it to do. Running and riding the bike works as expected, but you can use it to track your lifting, aerobics, swimming and other kind of workouts. I use it mainly for running, lifting and sometimes kettlebell workouts. I haven't used it for swimming yet so i can't tell you how good it realy is. For tracking your kcals you have to use MFP. All the data at the beginning is a cool feature but after a year i only track relevant data that i am interessted in. I chose this watch mainly for the use at the gym.
