now that i have a boxing bag...i mean im not a "fighter" yet..but im starting to feel like i can throw a few punches at least.

when you are an actual boxing student 4-6 months...you no longer fear anyone. oh this guy is gonna try to punch me? i can break his skull in seconds.

I want to do gi judo just for that reason because I've done wrestling for 4 years and no gi judo for a year. I just figured the no gi throws would be more useful.

They would be more useful. Wearing a jacket like in the video though gives me a woody. Ogoshis (hip throws) would be the most useful, especially for a small guy against a tall guy/woman. But with a jacket honestly everything is open.

Imagine video above but with someone who doesn't know how to fall. Head first into concrete, good night sweet prince.

The Gracies have always been scumbags. It's a miracle that they came up with a competitive format as fun as BJJ, even if IBJJF seems bent on killing the sport.

A lot of modern BJJ is directly from Judo and Sambo. The Gracies weren't the only Brazilians to work on Jiu-jitsu. Hats off to them they did a good job but they are also way overrated.
John Danaher and Eddie Bravo have done far more for grappling as far as techniques.

Oh, also the janny didn't drop his purse, throwing of its center of mass. Anyone with any experience would have beat the troony's head in (justifiably).

Literally moronic take. If grappling was better than striking the best mma guys would always be grappler only and an all state wrestler with a belt belt in Judo or Jiu-jitsu would always be the champion of any mma league.

        Anonymous

        >mma guys
Don't punch balls, don't break noses and have no broken spine after the first (and last) career fight. It is still regulated and in no way indicative of what would happen on the street.

          Anonymous

          >muh street
The only people who say this kind of stuff are people who have literally never been in a fight on the street. Hitting people in the balls doesn't end fights, people get broken noses and bones and eye gouges and all kinds of shit in MMA all the time (it's banned because it doesn't end fights, it just hurts people without causing stoppages), and getting body-slammed onto a mat is not fundamentally different than getting slammed onto the ground or concrete (MMA fighters don't get hurt that bad because they know how to break falls and slams).

You're a goofball whose never been in a fight on the street, so stop bringing up the street. What works in MMA directly correlates to what works on the street. This is widely accepted by self-defense experts and the guys who grew up fighting on the street that then went to MMA.

          Anonymous

Striking is even more effective in streetfights. The ground is concrete usually which means most grappling techniques leave you open to slamming your head or being slammed on concrete not mats. Any striker with even 1 lesson of takedown defense will usually frick up a grappler in a street situation and also you want to be on your feet to run away if you're outnumbered.
I train both and I love grappling but saying grappling is better than striking is pure moronation in a competitive environment, in the wild it is apex tardery

You should do hindu push ups and hindu squats as a warm up, they also teach you basic principles of wrestling "catching" a sprawl and pressing down to pin. Most you need for takedown defense. No drill "jab-cross, left upper, right upper." till you can flow them beautifully and fast also drill the speed bag form on the heavy bag, its useful to learn, its like the chain punch in wing chun.

Amateur boxer with a few won fights under his belt here.
1-2 years of casual boxing will put you ahead of 95% of people. Just mastering the jab and learning to control the distance makes you realize how bad people are at fighting.
All of that will mean jack shit in a real fight though if you don’t actually spar with people.
However, fighting on streets is absolutely stupid and I’m saying it as a person who is lucky to live in a country with a very low
criminal assault rates and where there are next to no guns or people carrying knives. I’m not even saying about getting stabbed or shot here. After knocking out a few people during sparrings and fights my biggest nightmare would be to KO someone and make him hit his head on concrete or some shit that would put me behind the bars. I try to avoid fights at any costs unless it’s absolutely unavoidable since then. If someone is not assaulting my family or gf I won’t get in it.
The good thing about learning boxing (but I think it applies to any martial art) is the confidence it gives you and clear headspace when the things are getting out of control. It’s enough to deescalate situation in most cases.

Thoughts on the Sanchin Kata, do you think this would be good complimentary training to boxing techniques even though its a Karate/Kung Fu kata? The idea is to master breathing and movement under tension to not be knocked around.

Its breathing kata that trains Vo2 max sort of and the fine motor control of the punching motion in combination. Think of it as a straight with an elbow driven backwards (basic Karate) the simple strike has three main uses: Pull, Punch, Strike with elbow.)

            Anonymous

            > trains Vo2 max sort
Why to do all these things from the video just to achieve this? Simply add running (a lot) to your routine. My coaches always used to say that in order to be a successful boxer you must become a semi-professional runner.

              Anonymous

True, its the stability of the legs (see how he moves his feet in and out) though that matter in eastern arts, if you get rocked hard you'll be knocked out and out.

Also, running expands the energy from the heart which is not great according to eastern medicine, I think the basis is QiGong and Daoist medical practices. In QiGong the breath as shown in Sanchin promotes longevity, relaxation and control of the muscles through movement with least spend life force plus it benefits in that you don't use as many calories compared to running so you can do that longer. Its also great for building stronger joints and breath. There's the so called "Joint Change Classic" QiGong form (very ancient) that aims to improve your joint health as well.

I've been doing boxing for 4 months and to some extent your right, I'm 18 and joined boxing after 4 years of lifting(+ weighted calisthenics) and aside from people who are obvious physical outliers like me the average combat sport practitioner really doesn't look that threatening but when it's time to fight they'll most probably destroy you if you don't know what you're doing. But people who train a martial art are far and in-between and you can sometimes tell who trains and who doesn't when you get the chance to analyze people

Im cringing so hard because in the first few weeks all I did was read Hajime no Ippo and yes I tried to emulate his style....horribly I might add. After putting points on the board during those 4 months though I stopped trying to go for that Mike Tyson shit and kinda just followed what worked for me and looked for boxers who used the same style. I must say although I have A LOT OF WORK, I can see the path even if just a little bit. Also Hajime no Ippo still goated even if it infested plenty of boxing gyms with weebs who think they already know everything
