It's just ridiculous unless the amount of weight you are using warrants needing more back stabilization. I can strictly barbell row 2pl8s for reps without needing baxk or chest support so it's always goofy seeing some guy pretending his 30lbs dumbell row is a Kroc row or some shit

There's no reason to have your knee on the bench. Just put your hand on the end of the bench
If you have both feet planted on the ground, you're less likely to turn your torso and thus use your upper back to move the weight and jerk it less.
I really like the way John Meadows suggested doing them (both feet on the floor, bench between the legs). It feels more stable and less fatiguing on the lower back.

I'm just bending over (with a straight back) and doing db rows with two dumbbells at the same time, in order to save time. Am I moronic?

It's fine but you could consider doing them like this so that the support alleviates some of the requirements from the lower back

That is a different variation of the movement. You can have our knee on if you want to or not. It does not matter. try them both out and do the one you prefer

I've heard rows should be equivalent to your bench but I can do like 4 reps max with that weight on dumbbell bench
I did 40x11 the other day on DB row and my incline DB bench is only 25x10 lol

it's clickbait with a little practical truth. In theory the exercise is fine, it's ok to have this position. In practice it's harder to do it correctly, your hips/back will wiggle or you go too low with your arm so you start to tilt. This fail is too tempting to do and most people WILL fail to do this correctly, especially when trying to do high reps or higher weights when you are at the end of the session.
