what are those foot rolly things on the thing they're standing on?

      Anonymous

They have small bumps or spikes that are supposed to activate more blood flow to the feet.

standing for hours is very stressful on the feet, you add those and you can stretch out the tendons and whatnot.

yeah. Like running or walking long distances, there gets a point where you can be too heavy to do it. That's going to cause a strain on the joints. If you're a skinny dyel or ottermode sure I could see it working, when I was real skinny standing was almost the same as sitting, so it can keep you active and that whole philosophy. But if you're heavier, it's going to be a strain to work at a standing desk for hours and do more harm than good.

Certain jobs I have to stand and take a half step all day. My feet kill me by the end. Others I'm walking, squatting, kneeling. I feel nothing normal by the end aside from the fact I work at a factory.

I doubt it. I mean, I couldn't work focused tasks like this. Maybe some routine clicking and reading emails... But writing a fricking analysis like that? Frick no.. I rather go for a 30 minute walk during a break

Oh. Then I take my words and stick them up my ass.

What's your chair bro? How much did it cost? Chairs from the office are killing my back slowly, but I can work from home more often now and been thinking of setting up a home desk. Been looking at ergonomic chairs but I don't want to spend 200€+ on a meme chair that only has that price due to le meme gaming chair.

Not the same anon but im 35 and have worked at a desk since 18 yrs old. CAD drafter. Long hours and barely any breaks.

Make sure you have activities outside of work that help with posture. OHP and DL are my favourite. The chair barely matters. It’s all about how you sit on it. I had a wooden kitchen stool for working at home for 6 months when Covid hit and my back felt fine.

    i got one for $250AUD
i never use it standing but it is nice to be able to just send the desk up when i need to unplug some shit

your better off buying a good chair for the ergonomics, it will quickly hurt your feet standing still even with matts
if you need to buy a new desk though id definitely get on over a regular desk

i also tried to put a stationary bike under it but i never really used it, a little desk peddle or treadmill can make it healthy but do you really want to be moving when using mouse and keyboard? i could only watch youtube on the bike typing was aids

i am going to buy a small BT keyboard soon so i can use PC on bed,
but those logitech membrane ones are gross, id just use a BT 60% mech like pic related

if your working in the same location i would just buy a nice heavy one and leave it there,
but i am a keyboard autist so none of this applies to you

I love mechanical keyboards for gaming but not for work. I have 3 offices so being able to just put everything in a tiny bag is great. The k380 keyboard is surprisingly awesome.

It’s pretty funny how different we all are. My company have unlimited funds for whatever gear I need but I can’t find myself using a mechanical for work at all. My CAD station costs 4500€, having two ultra wide monitors.

yeah, for some reason i spend so much on keyboard, headphones, mice but still use a a shitty TN panel 60hz monitor

                I couldn't live without a numpad

for my usecase i am just going to be sitting on bed using youtube search or whatever, dont need numpad
you can buy seperate numpads which you can move out the way (usefull for gaymin)

                >screens are still not eye level
                Why even bother?

this is actually a massive problem for standing desks
you have to adjust the monitor height every time

                >TN panel
This is usually bad because of color rendition, and possibly viewing angle.

I heard sitting was terrible for you like 5 years ago, iirc it was even compared to smoking in how bad it was and how little the health effects have reached the public consciousness
I'm assuming it isn't that bad if you get exercise and don't frick your posture because I don't hear about it anymore. Like they're embarrassed they made such a big deal out of it

Design guy here, loads of CAD and some obligatory noodling about sketching. Bit of a restless leg problem. I use a standing desk in one studio (office) and I reckon concentration and effectiveness are vastly improved overall, purely because I'm not as constrained as when I'm at a normal desk. I often find that I move to standing without realising when mulling over some complexity. Leaning back on a barstool isn't a great idea and it's more of a trek when I drop my pen.

Also find sketching far easier when standing.

Started off as a mech eng., got bored and went back to college for a couple of years. Started working as a freelancer as had kid on way and partner with good job and income. Mix of ID and mech eng got my foot in door with college alumni (one or two heavy hitters). Have remained freelance as it allows me to help partner with her combo of work and health issues (overall downward trend, alas) but examining permanent option with one client.

Programs (just tools to help express your ideas, remember! ): Solidworks, Modo, Rhino, Fusing 360, Photoshop, Illustrator. Pen and paper the best for letting the mind meander...

      so many basedaks here lmao
you can tell no one here actually needs to do any mental work
I am a software engineer, (no not a onions web dev) and i use standing desk every so often, it makes a clear mental picture if you stand. Much more easier to think. I usually walked around if i needed to think, with standing it is easier to walk and i need less walks.
And if you complain standing is too strenuous for you then why don't you just have a nice day you weak pussy homosexual, existence is too much to bear for you, you should be ashamed of yourself. I can easily stand for 9+ hours, yes legs might hurt a bit, but pain is good, goes away if you sit for ~30mins, normal pain as if you're walking a longer distance (if you even know what that feels like)

      this chad gets it

sitting is bad because you sit for hours and hours and hours in strange positions. the solution is to walk around more often not just stand for hours instead.

What I wonder about is working while lying in bed. I only work a couple hours a day and prefer to do it lying down. I imagine this is umcommon enough that it isn’t being researched, but it’s much more cozy this way. Get some blankets tucked under the elbows and a nice pillow stack going, very ergonomic.

I started using one because I got a varicocele, which I assume was from sitting down coding 12 hours a day for several years in a row. It hasn’t helped and actually just makes it harder to concentrate. At this point, I think surgery, a new job, or sacrificing my left testicle are my options.

For some reason, this exact chair and desk combo is the perfect setup. I work from home, game and post while sitting here. The little area to bring your chair in is what makes it work. My elbows therefore are always on my desk. The height of it is probably higher than others are used to, the desk is at the bottom of my pec. The chair has a slight bit of lean back but a little resistance. Because of all these factors I'm forced to sit up straight at all times. I've had this setup for about 5 years and never once have I felt anything in my back.

If I was to tell you one thing it's probably find a desk where your elbows are forced to be on the desk while also being quite high.

or just get armrests with adjustable height?

I suppose you could, but my surface area is much bigger than what arm rests would give you
